   STOCKHOLM (AFN) - Greenpeace wil de bruinkoolactiviteiten van Vattenfall in Duitsland kopen om zo snel mogelijk een eind te kunnen maken aan het gebruik van de vervuilende brandstof. De milieuorganisatie maakte dinsdag haar interesse kenbaar aan Citigroup, de Amerikaanse bank die het moederbedrijf van Nuon adviseert bij de voorgenomen verkoop van het onderdeel.
   
   Door het Duitse besluit om te stoppen met kernenergie zagen energieconcerns in het land zich genoodzaakt hun centrales te stoken op bruinkool. Vattenfall besloot enige tijd geleden zijn bruinkoolmijnen samen met nabijgelegen waterkrachtcentrales in de etalage te zetten, waarna een aantal partijen interesse toonde. Greenpeace wil vermijden dat de activiteiten worden verkocht en werpt zichzelf als koper op om de vervuiling te kunnen stoppen.
   
   ,,Bruinkool moet in de grond blijven. De Zweedse overheid, de eigenaar van Vattenfall, kan niet bijdragen aan de vervuilende uitstoot door de activiteiten te verkopen´´, aldus Greenpeace. ,,Vattenfall en de overheid moeten hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor vervuiling, ook buiten de Zweedse grenzen. Doen ze dat niet, dan moeten organisaties als de onze ingrijpen.´´
   
   Greenpeace denkt de aankoop te kunnen financieren uit donaties, dan wel het geld bijeen te brengen met crowdfunding. Een woordvoerder van de milieugroepering zei vooral te rekenen op steun van de achterban ,,die door middel van deze transactie bij wil dragen aan het redden van het klimaat''. Vattenfall liet weten dat het alle serieuze interesse verwelkomt. De verkoop zal nog maanden in beslag nemen.

   Thermal power plant to cost about EUR 12 billion
   
   Ms Jabulile Mashwama, Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, said Parliament that setting up a thermal power plant will cost government about EUR 12 billion.
   
   She said that preliminary activities towards the start of this major project were underway, like the prospecting process of coal.
   
   This is a process led by the Swaziland Electricity Company using the services of prospecting consultants.
   
   Results of the prospecting will be available by the end of the year or early next year.
   
   The minister was addressing senators during a portfolio committee debate on the ministry.
   
   Government’s dream of a thermal power plant is well documented, and the major motivation behind it is the desire to lessen the country’s dependency on imported electricity. SEC imports over 80% of its electricity from South Africa’s power utility company, Eskom.
   
   Ms Mashwama, said that “The continued heavy dependency on Eskom is risky, so government is on a mission to see to it that local generation of power is expanded. That is why local Independent Power Producers have been urged to produce more electricity. If there is a surplus it will be exported to other countries”
   
   But in the meantime, the insufficiency of electricity was felt by all countries in Southern Africa and the minister said this was why any country that generated a surplus would be able to get customers outside its borders.
   
   Ms Mashwama, highlighted, however, that the cost of generating one’s own electricity was much more expensive than buying it.
   
   She said that it often became a challenge for SEC to strike a deal with an IPP that sold its units at a slightly higher cost than those obtained from Eskom.

   Greenpeace plans bid for Vattenfall's German coal business
   
   DW.com reported that environmental group Greenpeace is exploring funding options to buy Vattenfall's lignite business in eastern Germany in a bid to scale back the operations put up for sale by the Swedish state-owned energy giant.
   
   On its website, Greenpeace Sweden released a letter to US bank Citigroup on Tuesday stating the environmental group's interest in buying Vattenfall's lignite operations in eastern Germany.
   
   Citigroup is charged with selling off Vattenfall's power plants and coal mines in the region, which are worth between EUR 2 billion and EUR 3 billion.
   
   The Swedish energy giant decided to shed its eastern German lignite operations, after writing down the business by USD 1.8 billion in July, citing the slump in power prices and worsening business due to Germany's transition to renewables.
   
   Ms Annika Jacobson, Greenpeace Sweden's program manager, said that Greenpeace wanted to start serious discussions with Vattenfall and that there were many ways to finance such an acquisition or buying strategic parts.
   
   Mr Juha Aromaa, a Greenpeace spokesman, said that the organization could finance a potential acquisition with donor money, crowd-funding and other sources of financing.
   
   He said that "Mostly, we would believe it would be our supporters who would be interested in such an acquisition to save the climate."
   
   He said that “Greenpeace called on Vattenfall and the Swedish government to accept responsibility also for greenhouse gas emissions outside Sweden's borders, and If they don't, we must handle the matter. The brown coal must stay in the ground."
   
   Ms Sabine Froning, Vattenfall spokeswomen, said in a statement that the process of finding a buyer would be open and that all serious bids are welcome.
   
   In eastern Germany, Vattenfall operates 8,000 MW of power producing capacity, including Europe's fourth largest carbon dioxide emitting power station, Janschwalde. The Nordic region's largest utility is trying to adjust its portfolio of power plants to focus on renewable energy.
   
   The planned sale of the German coal mines and power plants would enable the state-owned company to meet its emissions targets without reducing pollution.
   
   Vattenfall's annual German emissions are 72.2 million tonne of CO2 more than the whole of its emissions in Sweden. Much of this is accounted for by its three massive coal-fired plants and five open-cut mines in eastern Germany.

   AMSTERDAM (AFN) - De Duitse energiereuzen RWE en E.ON waren maandagochtend in trek op de beurs na de uitkomsten van de zogenoemde stresstest van de energiesector in Duitsland. Beleggers deden het verder rustig aan na de sterke opmars van vorige week en keken uit naar de cijferstroom die later in de week opgang komt.
   
   De AEX-index op Beursplein 5 noteerde in de vroege handel 0,3 procent hoger op 442,84 punten. De MidKap klom 0,7 procent tot 664,69 punten. De beurs in Parijs won 0,2 procent, terwijl de Londense FTSE-index 0,2 procent in de min stond.
   
   De DAX in Frankfurt won 0,7 procent. Het Duitse ministerie van Economische Zaken liet afgelopen weekeinde weten dat de vier grote Duitse energiebedrijven voldoende geld hebben gereserveerd om de kosten te dekken van de ontmanteling van hun kerncentrales en het opruimen van atoomafval. De beursgenoteerde Duitse energiereuzen E.ON en RWE stegen respectievelijk 10 en 13 procent.
   
   ArcelorMittal
   
   Grootste stijger in de AEX was staalproducent ArcelorMittal met een winst van 2,8 procent. Koploper in de MidKap was roestvrijstaalmaker Aperam met een plus van 3,2 procent. Maritiem dienstverlener SBM Offshore sloot de rij met een verlies van 0,5 procent.
   
   Philips leverde 0,1 procent in. Het elektronicaconcern ziet zijn financieel directeur Ron Wirahadiraksa vertrekken naar cementreus LafargeHolcim. Abhijit Bhattacharya wordt de nieuwe financiële topman van Philips. De wisseling van de macht aan de financiële top van Philips komt volgens Rabobank op een opmerkelijk moment, twee weken voor de presentatie van de kwartaalcijfers.
   
   Glencore
   
   In Londen won Glencore 0,8 procent. Het grondstoffen- en mijnbouwbedrijf gaat twee kopermijnen, in Chili en Australië, verkopen. Met de opbrengsten wil het concern zijn schuld terugbrengen.
   
   De euro was 1,1380 dollar waard, tegen 1,1365 dollar bij sluiting van de Europese beurzen op vrijdag. De prijs van een vat Amerikaanse olie steeg 0,9 procent naar 50,06 dollar. Brentolie werd 0,8 procent duurder en kostte 53,07 dollar per vat.

   Michigan plans to shutter 25 coal units by 2020
   
   It is reported that coal-heavy Michigan is on its way to a cleaner energy future, with more than two dozen coal plants tagged for retirement. The state also committed to filing a compliance strategy aligning with the federal government's Clean Power Plan.
   
   The CPP will mandate a 39% reduction in emissions by 2030 for Michigan, but the state is already on the way to a 17% reduction in the next five years.
   
   The Detroit Free Press reports 25 plants in the state have been scheduled for retitrement: 3 DTE units; 7 Consumer's Energy units; 1 from Michigan South Central Power; 3 units from Holland Board of Public Works; 6 from the Lansing Board of Water and Light; and 5 units owned by Wisconsin Electric. All told, the retirements will equal more than 2 GW of capacity.
   
   Despite the Republican-led state's historical reliance on coal, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has said developing a compliance plan is preferable to placing the state's future in the hands of Washington "bureaucrats."
   
   But while Snyder's office said it appears a reasonable path to compliance can be found, he also lamented that more than half of Michigan’s renewable energy generation will not be awarded credits under the rate-based emissions approach in the final rule.
   
   Snyder said in a statement that “The best way to protect Michigan is to develop a state plan that reflects Michigan’s priorities of adaptability, affordability, reliability and protection of the environment. We need to seize the opportunity to make Michigan’s energy decisions in Lansing, not leave them in the hands of bureaucrats in Washington, DC.”

   Clean power plan to shutter 4,000 MW of Texas coal output
   
   According to the state’s grid operator, Mr Barack Obama president plan to fight climate change will force at least 4,000 megawatts of coal-fired power in Texas offline, pushing energy prices higher and increasing the risk of blackouts.
   
   Electricity bills may jump by as much as 16 percent by 2030 as a result of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, grid operator Electric Reliability Council of Texas Inc. said in a report posted on its website Friday. Texas joins other grid managers and utilities that have warned of higher prices and reliability issues from plant closures if the plan is finalized.
   
   Ercot said that “This amount of unit retirements could pose challenges for maintaining grid reliability. Impacts are likely to intensify and occur earlier when the effects of the CPP are combined with other environmental regulations.”
   
   The expected closures in Texas represent about 6 percent of Ercot’s current installed capacity. The grid operator requires generators to give 90 days notice before shutting a plant, Warren Lasher, Ercot’s director of system planning, said in a conference call with reporters.
   
   Ercot said its price forecasts don’t account for transmission upgrades, more expensive natural gas caused by increased demand and costs associated with the retirement or scaled-back use of coal-fired plants. Those factors could lead to even higher power costs.
   
   Ercot added that the analysis assumes that the price of natural gas, a key fuel in power generation, will jump to over USD 6 per million British thermal units by 2030, from the current price of about USD 2.40. Replacing units, building new transmission lines and installing energy efficiency technology would cost tens of billions of dollars.
   
   The EPA rule, finalized in August, includes a provision that eases compliance with pollution restrictions if they threaten to shut power plants needed to keep the lights on. The EPA also delayed the first compliance date by two years to 2022 and instituted a carbon trading system as an option to meet the mandates.

   Drie Amerikaanse ‘startups’ storten zich op kernfusie: hoe realistisch is dat?

   Een drietal Amerikaanse bedrijven probeert één van de moeilijkste wetenschappelijke problemen te tackelen: gecontroleerde kernfusie. Of het ze lukt, is hoogst onzeker. Toch weten ze bekende investeerders aan zich te binden.
   
   Elektriciteit opwekken uit kernsplijting kan de mens al zo’n zestig jaar; in de jaren vijftig werd de eerste commerciële kernreactor in bedrijf genomen in de Verenigde Staten. Sindsdien zijn er honderden kerncentrales gebouwd.
   
   Maar kernenergie kent risico’s, zoals vier jaar geleden weer eens bleek bij de ramp in Japan met de kerncentrale in Fukushima. Dat was voor Duitsland de druppel: vanaf 2022 moeten alle 17 kerncentrales in het land gesloten zijn. Bovendien blijft de vraag wat je met het nucleaire afval doet.
   
   Een veiliger en schoner alternatief is kernfusie, het proces waarbij de kernen van verschillende atomen samensmelten. Dit is de manier waarop de zon energie opwekt. De fusie gebeurt alleen onder extreem hoge temperatuur en druk, zoals in het binnenste van een ster. Wetenschappers proberen al decennia om dit proces na te bootsen op aarde, tot nu toe met wisselend succes.
   
   ITER-project
   
   Het bekendste en grootste onderzoeksproject is ITER, een internationale samenwerking tussen de EU, Japan, Zuid-Korea, China, India, Rusland en de VS. De reactor, die 14 miljard euro kost en waarvan de bouw al bijna tien jaar vertraging op heeft gelopen, wordt gebouwd in Frankrijk.
   
   Het ontwerp is een zogenoemde tokamak, een donutvormig apparaat waarin een gloeiend heet plasma wordt beheerst met behulp van sterke magnetische velden. De tokamak is op dit moment de meest gevorderde technologie om kernfusie te bereiken in een gecontroleerde omgeving.
   
   Alternatieve technologieën
   
   Toch denken enkele Amerikaanse startups dat kernfusie op andere manieren ook mogelijk is. Een drietal bedrijven heeft al honderden miljoenen aan financiering opgehaald van enkele zeer bekende investeerders, schrijft The New York Times.
   
   Amazon-baas Jeff Bezos heeft via zijn investeringsmaatschappij Bezos Expeditions geld gestopt in General Fusion, dat mikt op een veel eenvoudigere machine dan de ITER-reactor. Het Canadese bedrijf wil met stoomaangedreven hamers een akoestische golf opwekken die het plasma samendrukt.
   
   In theorie is de aanpak van General Fusion al sinds de jaren zeventig bekend, alleen bestond de technologie nog niet om de hamers op exact hetzelfde moment neer te laten komen. “We verwachten de komende jaren bezig te zijn om te bewijzen dat onze aanpak werkt”, zei CEO Nathan Gilliland afgelopen zomer, nadat het bedrijf 27 miljoen dollar aan financiering ophaalde. Als het prototype werkt, wil General Fusion een reactor op grotere schaal bouwen.
   
   Helion Energy
   
   Paypal-oprichter Peter Thiel — de man die jongeren 100.000 dollar geeft om niet naar de universiteit te gaan – zet zijn geld op de ‘Fusion Engine’ van de startup Helion Energy. Het bedrijf uit Seattle kreeg afgelopen zomer nog een investering van 10,6 miljoen dollar.
   
   Hoe werkt de Fusion Engine? Twee kleine bollen plasma worden met een snelheid van honderden kilometers per uur op elkaar geknald, wat in theorie zou moeten leiden tot het fuseren van atoomkernen. Helion Energy heeft al vier prototypes van het apparaat gebouwd en denkt in 2019 de eerste commerciële machine op de markt te brengen. Daarvoor heeft het wel nog zo’n 200 miljoen dollar nodig.
   
   Tri Alpha Energy
   
   Het best gefinancierd is Tri Alpha Energy, dat al sinds 1998 werkt aan een kernfusiereactor. Het Californische bedrijf haalde al meer dan 200 miljoen dollar op, bij onder meer Goldman Sachs, Microsoft-oprichter Paul Allen en het investeringsvehikel van de Russische overheid, Rusnano.
   
   Maar het bedrijf is ook het meest geheimzinnig van alle kernfusie-startups: er is geen website en Tri Alpha doet geen mededelingen over de voortgang die ze boeken. Voor zover bekend gebruikt het bedrijf een vergelijkbare technologie als Helion Energy om kernfusie voor elkaar te krijgen. Maar niemand weet precies hoe, afgezien van de 150 medewerkers van het bedrijf.
   
   Verouderde principes
   
   De drie Amerikaanse kernfusiebedrijven proberen met een fractie van de financiering en mankracht voor elkaar te krijgen waar de grote landen op aarde een machine van 14 miljard dollar voor bouwen, met het ITER-project. Mocht het ze lukken om een werkende kernfusiereactor op kleinere schaal te bouwen, dan zijn de potentiële verdiensten enorm. Miljardairs als Bezos en Thiel, die niet weglopen voor ambitieuze ideeën, durven dat gokje wel aan.
   
   Maar hoe realistisch zijn de plannen van General Fusion, Helion Energy en Tri Alpha? Atoomwetenschapper Edward Morse van de Universiteit van Californië denkt niet dat de drie kans van slagen hebben, zegt hij tegen The New York Times. “Bij kernfusie worden dezelfde ideeën om de twintig jaar weer uit de kast gehaald.” Volgens hem gebruiken de bedrijven principes waarvan al lang is aangetoond dat ze niet werken in de praktijk. Verspilde energie dus.

   STOCKHOLM (AFN) - Het Zweedse energieconcern Vattenfall, moederbedrijf van het Nederlandse Nuon, heeft in het derde kwartaal winst behaald, na een groot verlies een jaar eerder. Volgens Vattenfall werd geprofiteerd van kostenbesparingen en een hogere stroomproductie, zo werd dinsdag gemeld.
   
   De winst na belastingen kwam uit op 1,6 miljard kroon (170 miljoen euro), tegen een min van 18 miljard kroon een jaar eerder. Destijds stond het resultaat zwaar onder druk door afschrijvingen op bezittingen, waarvan het overgrote deel voor rekening kwam van Nuon. De omzet bedroeg vorig kwartaal 37,5 miljard kroon, tegen 34,7 miljard kroon een jaar geleden.
   
   Volgens Vattenfall blijven de marktomstandigheden door de lage elektriciteitsprijzen en overcapaciteit echter nog steeds uitdagend, met name in Scandinavië. Het bedrijf gaf aan dat meer maatregelen nodig zijn om de kosten verder te verlagen.
   
   Eerder dit jaar kondigde Vattenfall aan dat nog eens duizend banen worden geschrapt om de kosten te verlagen. De afgelopen twee jaar schrapte Vattenfall in totaal al zo'n 2500 banen, waarvan 500 bij Nuon, dat in 2009 werd overgenomen door de Zweden.

   ABB India rolls out first 800 kV converter transformer in Gujarat
   
   Business Line reported that ABB India rolled out the first 800 kilovolt (kV) converter transformer manufactured at its Vadodara facility in Gujarat for the ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission link.
   
   The transport weight of the transformer is around 300 tonnes and it will be installed at PowerGrid’s Agra substation, part of the North East-Agra 800 kilovolt (kV), 6,000 MW, 1,750 km long, UHVDC transmission link.
   
   Mr Pitamber Shivnani, President, Power Products Division, ABB India, said that “It is a privilege to be working on such a landmark project. UHVDC is the technology of choice for long-distance bulk power transmission and enables evacuation and transmission of clean energy from the North East to load centres of North India. It also brings cheaper power from the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to the North Eastern Region with minimal losses.”
   
   Mr Shivnani said that “We continuously invest in and develop our local capabilities to enable us to make and deliver leading edge technologies in India.”

    RWE to shift 1.5 GW of capacity to Germany's new coal reserve
    
    A spokeswoman for RWE said that German utility RWE will shift power plants capable of generating 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to the country's coal-fired reserve between 2017 and 2019, on Friday.
    
    Germany in July abandoned plans for a levy on coal-fired power plants and instead decided to pay companies to shift power capacity to a coal-fired reserve to safeguard its 2020 carbon-reduction targets.
    
    In total, some 2.7 gigawatts of power generation from brown coal, equivalent to the output from five power plants, will be closed but retained as reserve power in case of emergency.
    
    The RWE spokeswoman said that the capacity that RWE is including in the plans - two power plant blocks in Frimmersdorf, two in Niederaussem and one in Neurath - are to be shut down four years after the shift.
    
    Germany's Economy Ministry declined to comment. Germany is boosting renewable energy production and phasing out nuclear energy. It has also set a target of reducing its 2020 carbon emissions by 40 percent versus 1990 levels.

    Obama sued by 24 states over coal rule for power
    
    24 states have banded together to fight President Obama’s signature climate-change rule that cracks down on power plant emissions, accusing the administration of an “aggressive” play for power.
    
    West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who’s leading up a 24-state lawsuit just filed against the administration, the Hill reported “EPA’s rule is flatly illegal and one of the most aggressive executive branch power grabs we’ve seen in a long time. The EPA cannot do what it intends to do legally.”

    The suit filed in the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit seeks an overturn of a new rule put in place through Obama that orders states to shift from fossil fuel power to wind and solar.
    
    As Morrisey said, the rule is “the single most onerous and illegal regulation that we’ve seen coming out of D.C. in a long time,” the Hill reported.
    
    He said that the suit seeks an immediate stay.
    
    The rule, the Clean Power Plan, demands states oversee 32 percent cuts in power companies’ carbon emissions by 2030, compared to 2005 levels. Each state’s been given a specific emission goal.

    Energiebedrijven produceerden vorig jaar meer vervuilende kolenstroom dan in het jaar ervoor. Uit een nieuw onderzoek door onder meer de Consumentenbond en Greenpeace blijkt dat de Nederlandse stroom aan het 'vergrijzen' is als gevolg van de lage kolenprijs.
    
    De organisaties beoordeelden alle 37 stroomleveranciers die actief zijn op de Nederlandse markt op duurzaamheid. Over de gehele linie zijn de energiebedrijven in het onderzoek als minder duurzaam beoordeeld dan een jaar geleden. Hun gemiddelde cijfer daalde van 5,7 naar 5,5.
    
    Energiereuzen Nuon en Essent kregen in het rapport beide een dikke onvoldoende, met scores lager dan een 4. Zij investeerden volgens de onderzoekers vorig jaar ook nog in vervuilende stroom. Van de grote spelers die samen ruim driekwart van de markt in handen hebben, was Eneco het meest duurzaam. Maar ook dat bedrijf zag zijn rapportcijfer iets teruglopen.
    
    De partijen kunnen volgens de onderzoekers beter scoren door te kiezen voor energie uit zon, wind en duurzaam gecertificeerde biomassa. Ook energie uit gascentrales wordt als voldoende duurzaam beoordeeld.
    
    In 2014 kregen negen energiebedrijven een voldoende, dit jaar zijn dat er acht. Deze koplopers zijn goed voor een gezamenlijk marktaandeel van 21 procent.

    RWE, Vattenfall lignite plants to enter USD 1.8 billion reserve
    
    Bloomberg reported that Germany forged an accord with three utilities to relegate some of their dirtiest power plants to the nation’s reserve generating capacity to help cut carbon pollution and avert blackouts.
    
    The Economy and Energy Ministry said that over seven years from the winter of 2016, eight lignite power plants owned by RWE AG, Vattenfall AB and Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlegesellschaft mbH will be placed in stages in the reserve to create a 2.7-gigawatt backstop.
    
    It said that the utilities will be paid about EUR 1.6 billion in all to keep the plants offline except in an emergency when power demand exceeds supply. The ministry didn’t name the plants.
    
    Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government said that it has a threefold aim in keeping some of German energy generation’s biggest polluters offline without shutting them down: cutting carbon emissions to meet its climate pledges, setting up a backstop against outages as clean energy expands and finally to assuage utilities that might otherwise shut down plants and fire workers.
    
    Mr Sigmar Gabriel, Economy Minister, a Social Democrat, said that the measures are key to “achieving our climate goal and at the same time ensure that negative structural changes are prevented in the regions affected. The accord “is a good and feasible solution for the employees and the companies.”

    Renewable energy sector see record hiring - Report
    
    Economic Times reported that renewables are powering the job sector. Record hiring in solar, wind and hydro sectors partly offset the biggest round of job cuts in the oil and gas sector in almost two decades.

    Alberta promises to boost renewables, phase out coal power
    
    Bloomberg reported that Alberta is pushing ahead with a plan to phase out coal power plants, support renewable energy and improve energy efficiency.
    
    Mr Joe Ceci, Finance Minister, said that “Acting on these issues will restore our international reputation – the necessary prerequisite to getting access to more markets for our energy products.”
    
    The oil-producing western province is Canada’s largest consumer of coal power.
    
    Premier Ms Rachel Notley is pledging to seek a leading role on climate change while promoting investment in the energy industry as the province grapples with the double-whammy of an oil rout and environmental opposition to its oil sands. Her task of cleaning up an industry criticized for runaway emissions has been made more difficult by collapsing crude prices and resulting job losses, with business leaders demanding the provincial government take a light touch with any regulatory changes.
    
    Ms Notley has promised to have a climate plan ready for United Nations talks in Paris that start November 30th.

    Essent scoort het slechtst op gebied van groene stroom, volgens een recente ranking van de Consumentenbond en een aantal milieugroepen. Maar die ranglijst rammelt aan alle kanten, schrijft Siebe Schootstra.
    
    Energiebedrijf Essent is volgens het jaarlijkse rapport ‘Onderzoek duurzaamheid Nederlandse stroomleveranciers‘ de minst groene energieleverancier. Maar Essent voelt zich miskend en schrijft op zijn website dat het juist de grote energiebedrijven zijn die een bijdrage leveren aan de energietransitie, en niet de kleine. Hoe zit het met die ranglijst?
    
    Ieder jaar onderzoekt adviesbureau CE Delft in opdracht van de Consumentenbond, Greenpeace, Natuur & Milieu, WISE, WNF en Hivos de energieleveranciers die in Nederland actief zijn, in het onderzoek ‘Energieleveranciers in kaart‘.
    
    Aan de hand van jaarverslagen, stroometiketten en input van de bedrijven – voor zover gegeven – ontstaat een beeld per leverancier als het gaat om de productie, inkoop en afzet van elektriciteit en de (des)investeringen in energieopwekking. De uitkomst is feitelijk en CE Delft onthoudt zich van inhoudelijke beoordeling.
    
    Vervolgens gaan Consumentenbond c.s. met die uitkomst aan de slag en passen zij een weging toe op ieder onderdeel. Dat wordt keurig beschreven in het eigen rapport.
    
    Strafpunten
    
    Hoewel aan deze methodiek niets valt af te dingen, is de opeenstapeling van wegingsfactoren vrijwel niet te volgen en dermate complex, dat van een objectieve uitkomst geen sprake meer is. Zo schiet de ranglijst haar doel voorbij.
    
    De ranglijst komt tot stand door het toepassen van wegingsfactoren: straf- of winstpunten. Kernenergie zorgt net als kolen voor véél straf. Nederlandse wind krijgt het meeste applaus, terwijl duurzame Noorse waterkracht wordt afgeserveerd ‘omdat dit nauwelijks bijdraagt aan een schonere energievoorziening’, schrijft de Consumentenbond. Zo worden ook de investeringen in fossiele of hernieuwbare energiebronnen gewogen en vertaald in respectievelijk straf- en winstpunten.
    
    Appels met peren
    
    De ranglijst combineert 37 verschillende partijen. Slechts negen daarvan hebben een eigen productievermogen voor het opwekken van elektriciteit. De overige 28 zijn retailers, handelshuizen die soms direct elektriciteit afnemen van producenten in binnen en buitenland, maar net zo vaak gewoon op de handelsplatformen inkopen. Voor hetzelfde geld betreft dit de grijze handelsmix, aangevuld met losse GvO’s (garanties van oorsprong) van groene stroom.
    
    Deze 28 retailers investeren in marketing en acquisitie van klanten met welkomstbonussen – maar niet in duurzame energieopwekking. Wel zorgen de prijsvechters van de lijst voor een hoge ‘churn rate’ (overstappers, de switchmarkt) bij de gevestigde orde van conventionele energiebedrijven. En laten dat nou net de partijen zijn die wel in duurzame energieopwekking investeren.
    
    Wind is goed
    
    Volgens de ranglijst is windenergie goed. De als groen gewaardeerde koplopers doen allemaal veel met wind, behalve Kas Energie, die met elektriciteit uit conventionele gascentrales op een onbegrijpelijke 7e plaats eindigt. Van de acht groengetinte leveranciers zijn er vier die actief investeren in windenergie.
    
    Hieronder geven we een lijstje, met de vermelding van de ranking op de lijst van Consumentenbond. Genoemd wordt hoeveel geïnvesteerd is sinds 2011 in de productie van windenergie, uitgedrukt in MW en hoeveel capaciteit in aanbouw is.
    
    In dit lijstje duikt coöperatie Qurrent op door de investering in windpark Hellegatsplein. Zo zijn er dus tien van de 37 partijen die actief in windenergie investeren, voor een deel op Nederlandse bodem. RWE/Essent is daarbij een grote met 210 MW, net als Eneco. Maar ook Nuon claimt een plekje en zegt tot de aanvoerders in windenergie te behoren, met moeder Vattenfall als de grootste investeerder in wind in Europa.
    
    Bijdrage energietransitie
    
    Los van de vraag hoe groen windenergie feitelijk is en hoe grijs de bijstook van biomassa, een ranglijst van onvergelijkbare grootheden is niet te maken. Misschien nog wel van de tien producerende leveranciers, maar al zeker niet van de 27 resterende retailers met uiteenlopende motieven om groen te leveren. Gooi ze dus niet door elkaar.
    
    Het verhogen van het aandeel duurzaam geproduceerde energie is de essentie. Door energiebesparing op de eerste plaats te zetten en een zo snel mogelijke toename van duurzame opwek na te streven, gecombineerd met de afbouw van fossiel, moeten we een heel eind kunnen komen.
    
    De energiereuzen spelen daar een belangrijke rol in, of de Consumentenbond dat nu wil of niet. Daarom toch weer een ranglijst, van energieproducenten die de meeste hernieuwbare GWh produceren. We noemen de spelers die voorkomen op de ranglijst en die zowel lokaal als internationaal produceren.

    India becoming the second largest coal-fired power producer - Mr Cousins
    
    Despite Australian Conservation Foundation president Mr Geoff Cousins’ said that, India is not seeking to get away from its reliance on fossil fuels (“India looks to the future, and coal is not part of it”, 4/11).
    
    India’s power capacity has quadrupled over the past 25 years and is expected to more than triple again over the next 15 as it tries to get over 300 million people on to the electricity grid and over 800 million away from using biomass as a cooking fuel.
    
    While it is correct that India aims to have 175 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by the early 2020s, the International Energy Agency has also said that India will build an additional 342 gigawatts of coal-fired electricity capacity by 2040, to become the world’s second largest coal-fired power producer behind China.
    
    However, yes, more than 2500 people died in this year’s heatwave, but fewer people would have died if they had access to air conditioning, refrigerated medicines and better quality housing.
    
    Meanwhile, if there weren’t the demand in the Indian market for Australian coal, Indian companies wouldn’t be coming to Australia to develop mines — and environmentalists wouldn’t be so desperate to lock them out.

    18,000 villages will get electricity in next 1,000 days - Mr Narendra Modi
    
    Ahead of the Climate Change Summit in Paris, Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi said that renewable energy could be a major component in meeting India's power requirement and promised to provide electricity to 18,000 villages in the country in the next 1,000 days.
    
    Addressing a rally after inaugurating a 450 MW phase-II Baglihar power project near Jammu, Mr Modi said that the need of the hour was to take steps that ensure the environment is preserved for the next generation and therefore, India has set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022.
    
    He said that "Today the whole world is greatly worried about global warming and climate change. One thing which comes to mind is the ways in which power generation must be changed. The easiest way to save the environment is to rely on hydro electricity, solar electricity and wind electricity. And for this, installation of windmills, solar panels, hydro projects are the steps which need to be taken."
    
    He added that India had set a "major target" of generating 175 GW of renewable energy, which can decrease the dependency on the electricity generated from using fossil fuels.
    
    Mr Modi said that "India has kept a major target of 175 Giga Watts (GW) of renewable energy. Our thinking has been restricted to only Mega Watts -- 1000 MW, 5000 MW, 10,000 MW. The term Giga Watt was never heard of. Today this government is moving towards 175 GW of hydro, solar and wind energy so that we can safeguard the environment and open new doors of development with the help of electricity."
    
    He said that it is his government's dream that every household of every village in the country gets round-the-clock electricity.
    
    He added that "We have a dream that by 2022, when India would be celebrating its 75th year of independence, every village of the country should get 24X7 electricity."

    DÜSSELDORF (AFN) - De Duitse energiereus E.ON heeft veel last van de lage elektriciteitsprijzen. Daardoor moet het in totaal 8,3 miljard euro afschrijven op zijn energiecentrales, zo bleek woensdag. Het nettoverlies over de eerste negen maanden van het jaar bedroeg mede daardoor bijna 5,7 miljard euro.
    
    Een jaar geleden hield E.ON rond deze tijd onder de streep nog 255 miljoen euro over. Het concern zei in september al dat het verwacht dit jaar een fors verlies te lijden. In 2014 leed E.ON uiteindelijk een recordverlies van ruim 3,1 miljard euro.
    
    De Duitse energieprijzen liggen momenteel op het laagste niveau in zeker twaalf jaar. Ook zitten ze dit jaar gemiddeld meer dan een tiende onder het niveau van vorig jaar.
    
    Dat E.ON het zo moeilijk heeft, hangt samen met Duitslands sterke focus op hernieuwbare energie. Het concern werkt daarom ook aan het afstoten van zijn gas- en kolencentrales om zich meer op duurzaamheid en het eigen netwerk te kunnen richten. De activiteiten komen in een nieuw bedrijf dat Uniper gaat heten en dat volgend jaar een eigen beursnotering moet krijgen.
    
    Fukushima
    
    Het was eigenlijk de bedoeling dat ook de kerncentrales van E.ON mee zouden gaan in de afsplitsing. Het concern kwam daar onlangs echter op terug omdat het niet wil wachten op de uitkomst van jaren van juridisch gesteggel over de verantwoordelijkheid voor de kosten van het ontmantelen van kerncentrales.
    
    Duitsland besloot na de nucleaire ramp in het Japanse Fukushima, waar in maart 2011 een kerncentrale getroffen werd door een zware aardbeving en tsunami, versneld afscheid te nemen van kernenergie.
