Baird on INTC (Neutral; $20 PT)

"There are discussions from the Asia supply chain that the U.S. government will get involved in potentially the following: TSMC would send engineers to Intel's 3nm/2nm fab, applying the company's know-how to ensure that the fab and subsequent manufacturing projects from Intel become viable. The fab could be spun off into a new entity jointly owned by TSMC and Intel, and run by TSMC. The new entity would receive U.S. Chip Act funding.

While there is no confirmation and potential completion of this project could be lengthy, we think this move makes sense, further building on Intel's prior CEO's focus on the company's core competency, manufacturing. Going forward, Intel would benefit from significant cash flow relief and would focus on design and platform solutions, while a viable fab could finally attract key fabless companies to diversify into a geo-dependable manufacturing model."

    Yep, voorbeurs tech/chips rood.
.......behalve, INTC (+5%). :) Something brewing there? Gisteren ook al +6% geëindigd.

Congress is buying INTC big time. It was the 5th most bought stock in 2024, with three members making eight purchases. Notable buyers include Marjorie Taylor Greene & Tommy Tuberville (R) and Jonathon L. Jackson (D). When both sides are in, you know something’s brewing. Bullish INTC.

    Intel (INTC) making moves.
Baird analysts note supply chain talk of a potential fab spinoff with TSMC involved, a shift that could streamline costs and sharpen Intel’s focus. If true, this could be a major step in their turnaround

DIGITIMES: Three proposals the United States has presented to TSMC.

    1. TSMC would build an advanced packaging facility in the US, offering integrated services from wafer manufacturing to backend processing locally.
    2. Under a joint venture (JV) proposed by the US government, TSMC along with several major companies would invest in Intel’s standalone foundry business and facilitate a technology transfer from TSMC.
    3. Intel would assume future packaging contracts from US customers that TSMC has secured, leveraging Intel’s advanced packaging capabilities.

    www.digitimes.com/news/a20250212PD234...

Regarding the first proposal, TSMC has previously shown reluctance to construct a packaging plant in the US due to labor shortages and low profit margins. There are also concerns that such a plant could impact TSMC’s backend partners like Amkor Technology.

The second proposal, the joint venture plan, is led by the US government, with sources indicating that the key point is for TSMC and several major companies to jointly invest in Intel’s foundry business, including a technology transfer from TSMC.

The third proposal entails Intel handling additional packaging orders from US customers that TSMC has secured. For instance, companies like Apple, which have already agreed to wafer production at TSMC’s US fab, have prior experience collaborating with Intel.

According to semiconductor industry sources, amid the US government’s drive to reinforce the domestic “Made in America” policy and implement measures to ensure Intel’s survival, TSMC is being cited as virtually the only solution.

Rumor: GF’s Caulfield to become CEO of Intel
A shuffle in Globalfoundries’ management team has prompted speculation that the firm’s CEO, Thomas Caulfield, is going to take the helm at Intel or Intel’s foundry division, which may or may not be spun out.

    Op X:

There is more going on with $INTC and investor sentiment than this. That said, I have spent many hours talking with differnet technical fellows in the industry and near unanimous belief Intel has some distinct technical advantages with 18A and 14A. PowerVia being a big one.
For those wondering why Intel is running strong lately, there are "unverified" SemiWiki paper stating Intel 18A has the highest performance for 2nm class process with TSMC in 2nd place and Samsung in 3rd place. Big if true.

    semiwiki.com/semiconductor-services/t...

    Conclusion

TSMC has disclosed a 2nm process likely to be the densest available 2nm class process. It also appears to be the most power efficient at least when compared to Samsung. In terms of performance, we believe Intel 18A is the leader. The early yield reports appear promising, but the reports of $30,000/wafer pricing do not in our opinion represent acceptable value for the process and may present an opportunity for Intel and Samsung to capture market share . TSMC 2nm should be in production in the second half of this year.

Vaak zie je na zo’n move de koers weer wat terugvallen omdat traders uitstappen, maar de afgelopen dagen niet en zelfs nu we de 200dma bereiken niet. Volume is overigens beperkt.
