    AIG Said to Discuss $15 Billion Sale of Life Insurer to MetLife

    Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- American International Group Inc. is in talks to sell a non-U.S. life insurer to MetLife Inc. for about $15 billion, a deal that would be the company’s biggest divestiture since taking a government bailout, said a person with knowledge of the matter.

    AIG and MetLife are close to an agreement on the price of American International Life Insurance Co. and haven’t yet worked out the form of payment, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are private. The sides have been in intermittent talks over Alico since late 2008, the person said, and AIG has also been weighing an initial public offering.

    New York Fed Says AIG Phrase Marked for Deletion Was Inaccurate

    Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said its attorneys suggested American International Group Inc. not disclose information about full-value payouts to banks because it wasn’t “precisely accurate.”

    “The counterparties ultimately received slightly less than 100 percent of par value,” the New York Fed said in a statement today on its Web site. The central bank said it “sought to ensure” that AIG had the “greatest possible precision” in its securities filings.

    Orbit May Sell Shares to Build $11 Million Apartments in Mumbai

    Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Orbit Corp., India’s best-performing real estate stock, plans to raise funds from institutions and a buyout firm to build apartments costing as much as $11 million in a nation with Asia’s second-largest number of billionaires.

    Orbit may sell as much as 3.5 billion rupees ($76.3 million) of stock to institutions in the first half of the year, Managing Director Pujit Aggarwal said in an interview. The Mumbai-based developer is close to getting 1.75 billion rupees from a private- equity fund to build 200 acres of luxury villas at Mandwa, 33 kilometers (21 miles) from Mumbai along the Arabian Sea, he said.

    Cisco, Silver Lake Planning More Investments in 2010 (Update2)

    Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Cisco Systems Inc., Silver Lake and Twitter Inc. predicted a surge of technology investments in 2010, fueled by untapped innovation and low borrowing costs.

    “There’s a whole other wave of entrepreneurs coming that just got started last year and this year building a new wave of technology,” Twitter Chief Operating Officer Dick Costolo said today in a panel discussion at Bloomberg’s San Francisco bureau. “These companies are getting funding and making money.”

    Japan Air to Cut Third of Staff in Turnaround Plan (Update2)

    Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Japan Airlines Corp. plans to cut 31 routes, 53 planes and almost a third of its workforce after winning state funds to help restructure following the nation’s fourth-largest bankruptcy.

    Asia’s biggest carrier will ax 14 international routes and 17 domestic ones by the end of March 2013 under a 900 billion yen ($10 billion) plan announced yesterday by Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp. of Japan, the state- affiliated fund leading the reorganization. Employment will drop by about 15,700 to 36,201 over the same period.

    De overleden Democratische senator Edward Kennedy wordt in de Amerikaanse staat Massachusetts opgevolgd door de Republikein Scott Brown. Dat melden de Amerikaanse media op basis van 88 pct van de uitgebrachte stemmen. Obama heeft hierdoor niet langer de vereiste 60 senatoren achter zich om de weerstand van de Republikeinen tegen de gezondheidshervorming te breken.

    HANNOVER - De Vlaamse tapijtbedrijven hebben afgelopen jaar opnieuw bewezen behoorlijk taaie vechters te zijn. De overlevingsdrang is er ongezien. Ze bekampen elkaar elke meter tapijt. De winnaar van die concurrentiestrijd is de tapijtketen Carpetright. De eigenaar van Carpetright, Lord Harris of Peckham, laat hen ongenadig dansen op de toon van goedkoop, goedkoper, goedkoopst. Harris prijst zijn kortingen aan met de slogan ‘carpet madness'. Dat zegt genoeg. En de Vlaamse producenten dansen bijzonder ijverig mee, ook al beseffen ze dat de vrucht van hun arbeid in de zakken van iemand anders verdwijnt.
