   Schapenhouder somber: Eerst blauwtong, nu MKZ
   UTRECHT/EPEN - 04-08-2007 - Bij schapenhouder Lardinois in het Zuid-Limburgse Epen is de stemming somber. Het bedrijf werd eerst getroffen door het blauwtongvirus, daar komt sinds zaterdagmiddag het vervoersverbod in verband met de mond- en klauwzeer (MKZ) bovenop.
   
   Els Lardinois, eigenaresse van de Schaapskooi Mergelland in Eperheide met ongeveer duizend volwassen mergellandschapen en zo'n vierhonderd lammetjes, noemt het 'verschrikkelijk'. Van haar schapen zijn er inmiddels dertig getroffen door blauwtong. Mevrouw Lardinois zit in zak en as. Niet alleen is de uitbraak van de blauwtong eerder en erger dan vorig jaar, vertelt ze.
   
   'Vorig jaar bleken pas op 17 augustus schapen van ons aan blauwtong te lijden. Nu hebben we daar al enkele dagen last van, veel vroeger dus. We houden ons hart vast.' Op 18 augustus vorig jaar waren twaalf schapen van Lardinois aan de ziekte gestoven, en er waren er nog eens zes ziek. 'Nu hebben we al dertig zieke schapen', zei Lardinois somber. 'En we schrijven pas 4 augustus.'
   
   Vervoersverbod
   Als klap op de vuurpijl komt daar, volledig onverwacht, een vervoersverbod bovenop. 'Als we de MKZ er ook nog eens over heen krijgen, kunnen we beter stoppen', verzuchtte ze. Samen met haar man zocht ze zaterdagmiddag internet af. 'We weten niet wat we met onze schapen moeten. Die lopen allemaal buiten, verspreid over verschillende graasgebieden. Alleen de zieke dieren halen we weg, die komen op stal te staan.'
   
   'Als de dieren een weiland kaal hebben gevreten, moeten ze daar weg, anders worden ze gek. Maar hoe moet dat met het vervoersverbod?.'

   TB patients find hope at Texas facility
   SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- People with infectious tuberculosis have found new hope at a special treatment facility in Texas, despite how many of them arrived there.
   
   Many of the patients currently residing in the Texas Center for Infectious Diseases said they appreciate the medical treatment they're receiving, despite the fact some were taken there under a court order, the Austin American-Statesman said Sunday.
   
   One patient identified only as John said that while he was forcibly taken to the medical facility by police due to the contagious nature of his condition, he has found hope there.
   
   "To keep a person under lock and key is ridiculous," the 45-year-old man said. "But the initial intent of this place is good. They want to help. They want to make sure when you leave here, you'll be OK."
   
   The facility's efforts come as the United States continues its successful battle against the disease, which has affected decreasing numbers of Americans the past few decades.
   
   Yet with tuberculosis currently on the rise globally, U.S. officials are using such medical facilities as the Texas center to help stem the tide throughout the nation.

   With the number of people infected this year with West Nile Virus three times higher than the same time last year, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today declared a state of emergency in Kern, Colusa and San Joaquin counties to prevent the spread of this mosquito-borne disease. This year there have been 4 deaths in California due to West Nile Virus (2 in Kern County, 1 in San Joaquin County and 1 in Colusa County).
   
   "Today I'm taking action to help the counties hit hardest by West Nile Virus. My proclamation makes financial assistance available to the local vector control districts and directs state agencies to take proactive measures to protect Californians from further spread of this deadly virus. I will continue to ensure our local agencies have whatever resources they need to fight the spread of this disease," said Governor Schwarzenegger.
   Since taking office, Governor Schwarzenegger has invested more than $15 million to fight the West Nile Virus. California has one of the most comprehensive West Nile Virus surveillance and control systems in the U.S. The state deploys surveillance and detection technology to track specific areas of West Nile Virus activity and alert local agencies so they can target their mosquito control activities.

   A PROCLAMATION
   OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY
   
   WHEREAS when compared to the same time last year, there has been a three-fold increase in the number of people infected by West Nile Virus; and
   
   WHEREAS since 2002, West Nile Virus has infected hundreds of people and caused multiple deaths in California, including four deaths this year; and
   
   WHEREAS the recent upturn in foreclosures this year has increased the number of vacant homes this summer with unattended and untreated pools, which has exacerbated the spread of West Nile Virus; and
   
   WHEREAS local governments have made sustained efforts to minimize the spread of the virus, and the state has supplemented these efforts by dedicating over $15 million over the last three years to mitigate the virus's effects; and
   
   WHEREAS despite those efforts to eradicate West Nile Virus, the virus remains a threat, and further efforts to control the spread of the virus and to reduce and minimize the risk of infection are needed; and
   
   WHEREAS the Mosquito Vector Control Association of California, which is composed of 61 local vector control districts, is seeking state assistance in addressing the potential for a West Nile Virus epidemic in California; including a request for funding for surveillance activity and abatement efforts; and
   
   WHEREAS control of West Nile Virus may require immediate actions to limit the population of adult mosquitoes and mosquito larvae, and those actions may include the ground and aerial application of pesticides in urban, suburban and rural areas; and
   
   WHEREAS there are also numerous and significant incidents of Valley Fever, especially in Kern County; and
   
   WHEREAS due to the magnitude of the threat, the size of the affected areas and the need to control the spread of the virus across jurisdictional boundaries, the conditions are beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of any single county, city and county, or city, and require the combined forces of a mutual aid region or regions; and
   
   WHEREAS under section 8558(b) of the California Government Code, I find that conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property exist within the Counties of Kern, Colusa and San Joaquin caused by the threat of West Nile Virus.
   
   NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, in accordance with the authority vested in me by the California Constitution and the California Emergency Services Act and, in particular, sections 8625, 8567 and 8571 of the California Government Code, HEREBY PROCLAIM A STATE OF EMERGENCY to exist within Kern, Colusa and San Joaquin Counties, and hereby issue the following orders:
   
   IT IS ORDERED that the Department of Public Health shall allocate up to $1 million dollars as needed, to local vector control agencies to identify potential mosquito habitat and to treat those areas to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus in the three above-listed counties and other counties identified by the Department of Public Health.
   
   IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Public Health shall allocate up to $350,000 to local vector control agencies for surveillance purposes to provide an early warning of the incidence of West Nile Virus so that proper control measures can be taken by the local vector control agencies to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus in the three above-listed counties and other counties identified by the Department of Public Health.
   
   IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Public Health shall coordinate with the State and Consumer Services Agency, the Resources Agency and the Department of Food and Agriculture to develop a plan using best management practices for implementation by the appropriate state agencies for the early detection of West Nile Virus on state-owned properties and appropriate mitigation and abatement measures. Funds in the amount up to $150,000 shall be allocated for the purpose of developing this plan.
   
   IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Public Health and the Department of Food and Agriculture shall work with the Mosquito Research Program at the University of California, Davis, to determine what resources are needed to further advance the research on the ecology and the epidemiology of West Nile Virus.
   
   IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Public Health shall work with (1) local vector control districts to utilize their existing power pursuant to Health and Safety code section 2053 to inspect and abate vector or public nuisances, with special emphasis on the removal of standing water in untended pools and containers on vacant property; and (2) the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and local public health departments to notify lenders, realtors, mortgage brokers and others whose responsibilities include managing vacant homes to ensure that pools and other containers that can hold water are drained and maintained empty to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus.
   
   IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Public Heath shall implement a supplemental program of mosquito control, including health advisories and technical assistance, in the above-listed counties to assist those counties and the mosquito and vector control agencies within those regions to minimize the proliferation of mosquitoes and to reduce the transmission of West Nile Virus.
   
   IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that all agencies and departments of state government utilize and employ state personnel, equipment and facilities for the performance of any and all activities consistent with the direction of the Department of Public Health in an effort

   Reversing The Signs Of Alzheimer's
   Scottish scientists are one step further to finding a cure for Alzheimer's, thanks to the development of a compound which reverses signs of the disease.

(Credit: Image courtesy of University of St Andrews)The biologists at the University of St Andrews have developed man-made compounds capable of blocking a nerve cell interaction known to lead to the symptoms of the disease. The researchers have shown that it is possible to reverse some of the signs associated with Alzheimer's.
   
   Dr Frank Gunn-Moore's team, in collaboration with researchers in the US, have successfully reversed a sign for the progression of the disease and prevented the death of brain cells. This subsequently leads to improved memory and learning ability that was already damaged.
   
   The results of the recent study - carried out in the lab using a model of the disease - has been described as 'exciting' by the Alzheimer's Research Trust, who helped to fund the research.
   
   Alzheimer's affects around half a million people in the UK - a number which is expected to double with the general aging of the population over the next generation. The discovery that Alzheimer's is caused by a toxic protein which kills off nerve cells in the brains of sufferers, has led to the search for a compound which can block or reduce the debilitating interaction.
   
   Alzheimer's is linked to the build up of amyloid protein which eventually forms 'senile plaques'. The amyloid protein inflicts damage by interacting with an enzyme called ABAD (Amyloid Beta Alcohol Dehydrogenase) and releasing toxic substances which kill brain cells.
   
   Dr Gunn-Moore's research initially focussed on developing the three-dimensional shape of ABAD and understanding how amyloid attaches itself to the structure.
   
   Dr Gunn-Moore, a senior lecturer at the University's School of Biology said, "Alzheimer's sufferers produce too much amyloid and ABAD in their brains. Based on our knowledge of ABAD, we produced an inhibitor that can prevent amyloid attaching to it in a living model. We have shown that it is possible to reverse some of the signs associated with Alzheimer's disease.
   
   "The work is now being continued to try and refine the inhibitor into a potential drug. Our research holds a possible key for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, particularly in its early stages."
   
   The Alzheimer's Research Trust have awarded the St Andrews team a further grant to develop the research over the next three years - the funding will allow PhD researcher Kirsty Muirhead to build on the success of recent results. Kirsty aims to find and test other compounds in order to find the inhibitor with the greatest potential for use in future therapies.
   
   Rebecca Wood, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said, "A drug that can stop Alzheimer's disease from killing brain cells is a holy grail for researchers working to overcome the devastating condition which affects more than 500,000 people in the UK. We wish Dr Gunn-Moore and his team well in this exciting research."

   Biotechfonds VS naar beurs Amsterdam

   AMSTERDAM - BG Medicine wil een beursnotering in Amsterdam. Het biomedische bedrijf uit Massachusetts heeft een aanvraag ingediend bij de US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) voor de handel in zijn gewone aandelen. De hoeveelheid uit te zetten aandelen en de bandbreedte van de uitgifteprijs worden in een later stadium bekendgemaakt.
   
   BG Medicine (de afkorting staat voor Beyond Genomics) ontwikkelt biomarkers en moleculaire tests. Artsen kunnen hiermee sneller een diagnose stellen. Het bedrijf werkt aan producten die onder meer hart- en vaatziekten, borst- en longkanker en de ziekte van Alzheimer kunnen detecteren.
   
   In januari sloot BG een samenwerkingsverband met onder meer elektronicaconcern Philips en farmabedrijf AstraZeneca . De partners gaan werken aan een onderzoek om hartaanvallen te voorkomen. Het met een beursgang opgehaalde kapitaal moet de verdere ontwikkeling van deze producten financieren. Op termijn wil BG een onderzoekscentrum openen op de High Tech Campus in Eindhoven.
   
   BG Medicine is een Amerikaans bedrijf met Nederlandse wortels. Onder de oprichters bevinden zich wetenschappers van TNO en de universiteit van Leiden. De huidige bestuursvoorzitter is een Nederlander, Pieter Muntendam. Het bedrijf is voor het merendeel eigendom van Amerikaanse kapitaalverstrekkers (48,8%), Gilde Investment (14,6%) en Philips (6,5%).
   
   BG Medicine wordt het zesde biotechfonds aan de Amsterdamse beurs. Crucell , Pharming , Galapagos en OctoPlus kregen in juni gezelschap van AMT. Dit biotechnologiebedrijf haalde euro 50 mln op.

   AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--De nettowinst van Fornix is in het eerste halfjaar van 2007 gestegen met 4% naar EUR5,7 miljoen, van EUR5,4 miljoen een jaar eerder. Dat meldt het biofarmaceutisch bedrijf dinsdag. Het bedrijf verlaagt zijn winstverwachting voor 2007.
   
   De omzet steeg naar EUR48,1 van EUR47,1 miljoen in de eerste helft van 2006.
   
   Analist Mark van der Geest van Rabo Securities rekende op een nettowinst van EUR6,2 miljoen bij een omzet van EUR50 miljoen. De bank heeft hold-advies op het aandeel.
   
   De verwachting voor de nettowinst in 2007 wordt verlaagd naar EUR13 miljoen, van EUR12 miljoen. Als redenen voor de lagere winstverwachting noemt Fornix aanloopkosten voor de start van allergie-activiteiten in Duitsland, die een negatief effect op de nettowinst hebben van EUR0,3 miljoen, en hogere kosten voor het onderzoek naar Oralgen Graspollen ter waarde van circa EUR1 miljoen.

    Bayer boekt winststijging 46% door boekwinst Wolff Walsrode
    AMSTERDAM (FD.nl/Betten) - Bayer heeft in het tweede kwartaal van 2007 een nettowinst behaald van euro 660 mln, een stijging van 46% ten opzichte een jaar eerder toen de winst uitkwam op euro 452 mln. De winst werd positief beinvloed door een eenmalige bate als gevolg van een boekwinst van euro 231 mln uit de verkoop van Wolff Walsrode. Dat heeft de grootste producent van geneesmiddelen van Duitsland dinsdag bekendgemaakt.
    
    De omzet steeg met 22,0% tot euro 8,22 mrd. Het bedrijfsresultaat voor amortisatie en afschrijvingen (ebitDA) nam met 39% toe tot euro 1,81 mrd, terwijl het bedrijfsresultaat (ebit) een stijging liet zien van 30% tot euro 1,185 mrd.
    
    Volgens bestuursvoorzitter Werner Wenning kende Bayer een goed tweede kwartaal, in navolging van de 'uitstekende start' van het jaar. Hij bevestigde de in juni verhoogde winstverwachting voor 2007. Bayer voorziet een ebitDA-marge, voor bijzondere items, van ten minste 20% over het volledige jaar.
    
    Bij Bayer Healthcare steeg de omzet met 64,7% tot euro 3,72 mrd en de ebitDA voor bijzondere posten nam toe met 106,2% tot euro 969 mln. Dit was met name te danken aan de bijdrage van het vorig jaar overgenomen Schering .
    
    Bij het onderdeel Bayer CropScience nam de omzet met 1,0% af tot euro 1,56 mrd mrd, terwijl de ebitDA 7,6% hoger uitkwam op euro 396 mln. Bayer MaterialScience kende een omzetgroei van 3,0% tot euro 2,62 mrd. De ebitDA daalde met 9,1% tot euro 409 mln.

    Persoonlijk mening is dat onderstaand bericht niet als goed nieuws te zien is, Crucell zal dan ook niet positief van dit persbericht profiteren en minimaal stabiel blijven als er al geen daling volgt.

    'Internet is positief voor psychosociale welzijn'
    Meisjes die vaak op internet vertoeven zijn meer depressief dan andere. Het internetgebruik op zich maakt echter niet depressief. Er gaat zelfs een positieve invloed van uit op het psychosociale welzijn. Dat stelt Eef Vervecken in haar eindverhandeling aan de studierichting communicatiewetenschappen van de K.U.Leuven. Ze ondervroeg hierbij 329 leerlingen uit de twee laatste jaren uit het Algemeen Secundair Onderwijs (ASO).
    
    Uit sommige studies blijkt dat internetgebruik meer depressief maakt. Mensen die internetten kunnen immers geen tijd besteden aan sociale interacties met vrienden of familie. Zwakke online contacten zouden hierdoor duurzame en sterke offline relaties vervangen. In haar onderzoek stelde Vervecken enkel een verband met depressie vast voor meisjes. 30,1 procent van de regelmatige vrouwelijke internetters zou depressieve symptomen vertonen, tegenover slechts 16,7 procent bij de jongens.
    
    Dat de depressieve gevoelens het internetgebruik voorafgaan en niet omgekeerd leidt Vervecken af uit het feit dat enkel voor het opzoeken van online informatie een verband kan vastgesteld worden. De betrokkenen hadden een laag zelfbeeld en/of veel levensstress. "Het lijkt aannemelijker dat deze meisjes deze info opzoeken om hun negatieve gevoelens te verzachten, dan dat ze hierdoor neurotisch en depressief worden". Vervecken wijst hierbij ook op het feit dat er geen relatie werd vastgesteld tussen internetgebruik en depressie voor mannelijke respondenten.
    
    De ondervraagden stelden bovendien dat het internet hen geholpen heeft om socialer te worden en meer nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten omdat ze in de virtuele wereld makkelijker kunnen converseren en hun ware zelf kunnen uiten. "Het digitale netwerk helpt dus eenzame en introverte meisjes om de muren van hun sociaal isolement te slopen. We vonden geen bewijzen voor de stelling dat duurzame offline relaties worden vervangen door oppervakkige online contacten vermits er vooral gecommuniceerd wordt met bestaande vrienden", aldus Vervecken.
    
    "De vrees voor sociale isolatie en negatieve gevoelens voor het psychosociale welzijn van internetgebruikers kan hierdoor voorzichtig worden opgeborgen. Via sociale interacties en online informatie kunnen mensen zoals introverten, eenzamen, depressieven, neuroten, mensen met een laag zelfbeeld, gestressten... de nodige raad en sociale steun terugvinden in de virtuele wereld. Deze studie geeft dat dit vooral bij meisjes het geval is. Toch denken we dat ook jongens wel eens naar het internet grijpen om zich van negatieve gevoelens te verlossen", aldus Vervecken. /
