    Taranto Residents Rise Up Against ArcelorMittal Italia

    DW reported that parents in the southern Italian city of Taranto are taking on the ArcelorMittal Italia steelworks they say is polluting the air and killing their children. In January, Angelo Di Ponzio lost his 15 year old son. Giorgio died from a soft tissue sarcoma, a degenerative phenomenon linked to prolonged exposure to dioxin in the air. Mr Di Ponzio told DW that "A genocide is unfolding before our very eyes, and the world knows nothing about it. His son is just one of many to have fallen victim to air pollution in his hometown of Taranto, in the Puglia region of Italy's Deep South.”

    After almost six decades as a factory town, it's only now that residents of Taranto are speaking out against an industrial side-effect the post-war generation long overlooked.

    Conceived as a state owned property in 1961, privatized by leading steel company Riva Group in 1995, and acquired by private Indian company ArcelorMittal last year, the ArcelorMittal Italia steelworks, which is known locally as ex-Ilva, sprawls over 1,500 hectares of flatland, making it Europe's largest.

    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Invests In Wastewater Monitoring System

    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih put into operation the second wastewater quality control station. Thus, the company has completed the implementation of a modern automated wastewater monitoring system, which has no analogues in Ukraine. Investments amounted to UAH 12.2 million

    ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih is one of the first industrial enterprises that began to introduce such a system. Back in 2008, three automated gauging stations appeared to record the volumes of wastewater discharges, which, prior to the acquisition of the enterprise by ArcelorMittal, were carried out by calculation. In 2017, a permit was received for the commissioning of an automated water quality control station, and in 2019, another similar one.

    At these two posts, modern equipment of leading world manufacturers is installed - Hach Lange (Germany), Seibold Composer (Austria), SYSTEA (Italy), Sontek (USA). Monitoring is conducted on six indicators: pH (pH), chlorides, iron, petroleum products, suspended solids, temperature. At the same time, imported equipment works at the control posts around the clock and remotely, without human presence. All data is automatically transmitted to the server for analysis by interested parties.

    (ABM FN) Aperam heeft de kredietbeoordelaars Moody's en S&P Global Ratings gevraagd het roestvast staalbedrijf niet langer te volgen en van een kredietwaardigheidsoordeel te voorzien.

    CEO Timoteo Di Maulo zei in een toelichting dat gezien het lage schuldniveau en de financieringsbehoefte van het bedrijf ratings niet langer als noodzakelijk worden beschouwd.

    "We herhalen onze belofte om onze financiele ratio's op het niveau van investment grade te houden", aldus de topman.

    Wat ik vreemd vind is dat de producten die Arcelor Mittal op de markt levert eigenlijk zo eenvoudig zijn na te maken dat het bijna geen zin heeft om er handel van te maken. Dit klopt ook want Arcelor heeft een beurswaarde die bijna niks voorstelt afgezet tegen de jaaromzet van het bedrijf.

    Ondanks dat China staal dumpt, importeren ze dus 95% van hun behoefte aan dit soort pijpen uit VS/Europa. Dan lijkt het alsof het toch niet zo makkelijk is om e.e.a. na te maken?

    Zelfde geldt voor automotive staal lijkt me. Een auto moet licht zijn maar bij een ongeluk goed de kinetische energie kunnen opvangen. Ben dan ook best benieuwd naar het gewicht en de NCAP rating van Chinese auto's ;-)

    Ik ben in Australie eens in een ijzererts mijn geweest (Tom Price / Pilbara) en dat kwam op mij wel erg makkelijk over, alsof ze gewoon een hele berg afgraven.
