    Feds seize $3.36 billion in crypto in dark web fraud case

    Federal authorities seized more than $3.36 billion worth of Bitcoin as part of an investigation into fraud involving the Silk Road dark web marketplace, the Department of Justice announced Monday.

    Why it matters: The announcement signals the feds' growing capability for — and interest in — recovering cryptocurrency payments tied to cybercrime.

    Driving the news: DOJ said it seized approximately 50,676 Bitcoin last November, which was then valued at more than $3.36 billion. At the time, it was the largest cryptocurrency seizure in DOJ history, but the amount is now worth roughly $1.05 billion.

    The department also announced that James Zhong pled guilty earlier this year to committing wire fraud in September 2012 after unlawfully accessing 50,000 Bitcoin from Silk Road.
    Flashback: If this number sounds familiar, it's the U.S. governments second multi-billion dollar recovery this year, following its find of ill-gotten gains from a 2016 hack on the exchange Bitfinex.

    Catch up quick: Silk Road was an illegal dark web marketplace that operated between 2011 and 2013 and ultimately collapsed after its operator, Ross Ulbricht, was arrested.

    Details: Zhong was able to manipulate Silk Road's payment system by triggering more than 140 transactions "in rapid succession" and successfully tricking it into releasing about 50,000 Bitcoin, according to an affidavit filed Monday.

    The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is building “hundreds” of crypto cases to crack down on tax evasion, an official reportedly said. In the fiscal year 2022, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division seized about $7 billion in cryptocurrency, which was double the previous year’s total.

    The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Investigation Division (CI), the tax authority’s law enforcement branch, is building “hundreds” of crypto cases, Bloomberg reported Thursday. The publication cited CI chief Jim Lee who said many of the cases will soon be made public.

    Lee explained during a press call that the cases largely involve cryptocurrencies being exchanged for fiat currencies and people failing to report payments in crypto. The CI chief noted that while most cases were related to money laundering in the past, he has “really seen a shift” in digital asset investigations in the past three years.

    The Criminal Investigation Division’s annual report, released Thursday, states that the IRS “seized record amounts of data and cryptocurrency.” Lee told the news outlet that CI seized about $7 billion in cryptocurrency in the fiscal year 2022, which was double the previous fiscal year’s total. The CI fiscal year began on Oct. 1, 2021, and ended on Sept. 30, 2022.

    The tax authority established the Office of Cyber and Forensic Services (CFS) last year to consolidate several areas of investigation, including digital assets, cybercrime, digital forensics, and physical forensics. Lee claimed that the office is capable of tracing essentially any crypto transaction.

    The report details:

    Among its priorities, CFS supports criminal investigations agency-wide regarding the illicit uses of digital assets and how they can be used to exploit the U.S. tax and financial system.

    “The CFS is constantly taking additional steps to evolve, especially as threats evolve in areas such as decentralized finance [defi], peer-to-peer payments, and anonymity-enhanced cryptocurrencies. Due to relatively limited resources, the CFS focuses on cases where they can have the most significant impact,” the report adds, elaborating:

    CI prioritized training and the deployment of cryptocurrency, blockchain, and open-source intelligence technologies to unravel complex cyber-financial criminal schemes.

    “When a foreign corrupt government official receives bribes, they often use a third party to move or launder those illegal proceeds to buy properties, cryptocurrencies, and many other assets. If any of the funds move into or through [the] U.S. financial system, CI can trace the money,” the report further details.

    CZ van Binance schijnt massieve hoeveelheden FTT te verkopen, het token van crypto exchange FTX.

    Het gerucht gaat dat Alameda research, opgericht door Sam Bankman-Fried niet in de laatste plaats om voor liquiditeit te zorgen op zijn nieuwe exchange, in de problemen is gekomen en dat hun holdings voornamelijk bestaan uit FTT token, ook Solana en Serum. Deze drie munten staan nu zwaar in de min en hebben de hele markt mee omlaag getrokken.

    Het punt lijkt te zijn dat Alameda hun gigantische positie niet kan verkopen zonder de hele markt omlaag te trekken en daarmee hun eigen positie verder te verslechteren.

    Sam Bankfried-Fried ontkent vanzelfsprekend in alle toonaarden dat er een probleem is.

    Is het een negatief bericht?
    Begrijp je wat er aan de hand is?
    ik nog niet namelijk.

    Dit is een forum om van gedachte te wisselen over crypto.
    Dat jij daar niet aan meedoet is al langer bekend.
    Kan ook niet want je begrijpt er niks van.
    Waarom verdiep je je niet in crypto ipv hier verveelt rond te hangen?
    Of ga iets doen wat je wel interesseert, waar je wel warm voor loopt.

    Binance koopt cryptobeurs FTX

    Na liquiditeitstekort.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Cryptoplatform Binance koopt concurrent FTX. Dit bevestigden de topmannen van beide bedrijven dinsdag.

    FTX kampt met een tekort aan liquiditeit en zag zich genoodzaakt aan te kloppen bij de concurrent.

    "Vanmiddag vroeg FTX om hulp. Er is sprake van een groot liquiditeitstekort. Om onze gebruikers te beschermen, hebben we een niet-bindende intentieverklaring getekend met als doel om heel FTX.com over te nemen", zei CEO Changpeng Zhao van Binance op Twitter.

    CEO Sam Bankman-Fried van FTX bevestigde de gang van zaken op Twitter. "Het belangrijkste is dat gebruikers beschermd worden", aldus Bankman-Fried.

    De komende dagen vindt er een boekenonderzoek plaats. Changpeng Zhao spreekt op Twitter van "een uiterst dynamische situatie".

    ik ken hele grote jongens die nemen btc heel serieus en die hebben zelfs geïnvesteerd ( zeggen ze ). waarom geven ze hun miljarden niet gewoon aan mij, ik vergok het echt niet.

    ik ken ook mensen die hebben totaal nergens verstand van en die zeggen tegen mij dat ik geen verstand heb van btc.

    ik denk dat ik er het meest van af weet in het nederlandstalige taal gebied.
