   Scientists Developing 2D Materials for Reversible Hydrogen Storage

   Melbourne Australia based Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials is undertaking research in hydrogen storage systems has been focusing on two classes of hydrogen storage materials, chemisorption & physisorption materials. In chemisorption materials, hydrogen is stored in chemical form as hydrides, and the release of hydrogen requires energy input. However, in physisorption materials, hydrogen is stored as molecular hydrogen, which is weakly bonded within the material, and, therefore, can be stored and released at a lesser energy cost. Finding physisorption materials is currently a critical bottleneck in the H-economy roadmap. Recent reports have applied a combination of atomistic computational methods and machine learning for identifying metallic clusters and metal-organic frameworks with high H2 adsorption capacity.
   
   This project will focus on two-dimensional materials as potential H2 storage structures, owing to their large adsorption surface area for H2 adsorption and the feasibility of their chemical modification. The key milestones of the project will include
   
   1. The establishment of material features to map the 2D material structure against the H2 adsorption strength, capacity and reversibility
   
   2. The application of ML on the said features to rapidly screen the current publicly-available databases of more than 6,000 2D materials to identify stable materials with H2 adsorption capacity of 7.5 weight % and adsorption energy per H2 molecule of 0.16 eV.
   
   This project is expected to deliver a database of novel materials that can be employed in IFM's collaboration with Hycel. We propose that density functional theory calculations, with van der Waals correction, can be used for the calculation of the H2 adsorption, and an ab initio molecular dynamics approach, Born-Oppenheimer & Car-Parrinello MD, be used to examine stability of H2 in response to applied temperature. Pressure should also be incorporated as a variable in the calculations. ML models will be trained on datasets of calculated adsorption energies which can then be extrapolated for identifying novel adsorption surfaces.
   
   This project is entirely focused on modeling and machine learning how to identify and discover new hydrogen storage materials. It is completely aligned with IFM's core area of Materials for the Hydrogen Economy.

   Iberdrola & BP to Accelerate EV Charging Infrastructure

   Iberdrola & BP have announced their plan to form a strategic collaboration aiming to help accelerate the energy transition. Together, the companies intend to collaborate to significantly expand fast EV public charging infrastructure to support the adoption of electric vehicles, as well as to develop large scale green hydrogen production hubs in Spain, Portugal and the UK.
   
   Iberdrola and BP plan to form a joint venture that intends to invest up to EUR 1 billion to roll-out a network of up to 11,000 rapid and ultra-fast EV public charge points across Spain and Portugal, significantly expanding access to charging for consumer and fleet customers thus accelerating electric mobility.
   
   The plan includes installing and operating an initial 5,000 fast charge points by 2025, and up to a total of 11,000 by 2030, including Iberdrola’s existing fast charging hubs. The companies are also looking at options to jointly serve EV customers in the UK.

   Buckeye Partners Completes Bear Head Clean Energy Acquisition

   Buckeye Partners has closed on the previously announced acquisition of Bear Head Energy, which is developing a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage and export project in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia with hydrogen electrolyzer capacity of over two gigawatts.
   
   Given the project's unique features and the geographic advantages of the region, including its status as one of the top locations globally for wind energy generation, we believe that this has the potential to become one the world's premier green hydrogen production facilities. As Buckeye continues to evolve into a more diversified energy company, acquisitions like Bear Head represent an opportunity for us to invest in growth that aligns with our customers' evolving needs and ESG priorities while leveraging our existing expertise and capabilities."
   
   As part of the project's phased development, Buckeye plans to partner with on-shore and off-shore renewable energy developers to build out a large-scale green hydrogen hub for Atlantic Canada. Buckeye and Bear Head believe this development will create a significant number of new clean energy jobs in the province, help support Nova Scotia's carbon emissions reduction targets, and establish the region as a global leader in the production of green hydrogen for domestic and export markets.

   Everfuel Secures Grant for Three Hydrogen Stations in Sweden

   Herning Denmark based Everfuel’s subsidiary Everfuel Sweden AB has received SEK 79 million for building 3 hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden. The funding is provided by Energimyndigheten and covers the costs of constructing the stations. All stations will support fuelling for passenger vehicles as well as heavy-duty vehicles. The stations will be built around the cities Helsingborg, Luleå and Sundsvall, which offers an extensive infrastructure network along the main Swedish traffic corridors, supporting initial fuel cell fleets and strategic roll-out of hydrogen infrastructure.
   
   The sites will be a part of Everfuel’s hydrogen station roll-out plan. The Swedish network will comprise of sites developed by Everfuel and sites developed in cooperation with partners such as OKQ8. Public funding programmes and customer commitments are key elements for realising the plan which is part of Everfuel’s Scandinavian green hydrogen fuelling strategy for trucks, buses and cars connecting the main traffic corridors in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The first Everfuel station in Sweden is expected to open later this year in Trelleborg.
   
   The stations supported by Energimyndigheten must be commissioned in 2023. The short timeframe for implementation is set to secure an infrastructure that is ready to support the hydrogen powered vehicles as they grow in numbers over the coming years.

RN22e and N Vision 74 are inspirational examples of N’s electrification vision. These two ‘rolling lab’ concepts demonstrate Hyundai Motor’s ambition to become a leader in the zero-emissions future. Hyundai Motor’s ‘rolling labs’ are where it tests and verifies the company’s advanced technologies to apply them to future production models.    In terms of design, N Vision 74 pays homage to the Hyundai Pony Coupe concept from 1974, which was developed by the legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The concept was then built into prototypes for Hyundai’s first production sports car. Although it could not reach production in the end, the daring attitude set the tone for the entire company. N Vision 74 inherited the pure surface, the dynamic proportioned profile and the unique B pillar from the 1974 Pony Coupe concept. Hyundai’s design heritage meets the electrification era with high performance to shape N Vision 74. In addition, Parametric Pixel lighting provides a futuristic flourish. Hyundai’s engineers developed a hybrid structure of a battery-electric in combination with an FCEV system, which is placed in an all-new layout. By having fuel cell system and battery-electric powering the N Vision 74 together, the cooling efficiency is improved, while the two different power sources can be used depending on different driving conditions. This fine-tuned logic system enables better torque vectoring by twin motors on the rear, allowing a precise and responsive cornering experience.    Repsol & Navantia to Explore Hydrogen Generation Opportunities

   Repsol and Navantia Seanergies have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly explore business opportunities in renewable hydrogen production in Spain. The signing took place at Navantia's Turbine Factory in Ferrol, a center that will play a key role in this agreement. The two companies have agreed to combine knowledge and efforts for the industrial development of renewable hydrogen. On the one hand, Navantia Seaenergies has announced the start-up of an electrolyzer production line at its Turbine Factory in Ferrol. On the other hand, Repsol will promote the installation of this equipment for the production of renewable hydrogen in its ambition to lead the market in the Iberian Peninsula and thus reach its capacity targets, set at 1.9 GW in 2030.
   
   In this way, both entities seek to position Spain as an international leader in the production of renewable hydrogen, while also contributing to reindustrialization, quality employment and economic development in the country.
   
   Repsol is currently the leading producer and consumer of hydrogen on the Iberian Peninsula, and has renewable hydrogen as one of its key transformation pillarsfor achieving its goal of being a company with zero net emissions by 2050. The multi-energy company has its own renewable hydrogen strategy to deploy projects throughout the value chain, with a planned investment of 2,549 million euros by 2030.

   Het Australische Hysata claimt de meest efficiënte elektrolyser ter wereld in handen te hebben. Met andere woorden: het kan (op termijn) de goedkoopste groene waterstof ter wereld produceren. De start-up haalde onlangs 29,4 miljoen dollar aan investeringen op om die belofte waar te maken.
   
   Het geld wordt onder andere gebruikt om een pilotfabriek te bouwen, waar de veelbelovende elektrolyser van de band moet rollen. In 2025 hoopt Hysata al op gigawattschaal te kunnen produceren.
   
   Efficiëntie van 95 procent
   Wat onderscheidt de technologie van Hysata van de rest? In een notendop: elektriciteitsverbruik. Bij het produceren van groene waterstof is elektriciteit namelijk één van de grootste kostenposten. Hoe minder elektriciteit er nodig is voor de productie van een kilo waterstof, hoe lager de kosten dus uitvallen. Bij de zogeheten capillary-fed electrolyser (CFE) van Hysata is het elektriciteitsgebruik relatief laag, dankzij een efficiëntie van 95 procent. Ter vergelijking: het gros van de elektrolysers die momenteel operationeel zijn, hebben een efficiëntie van 75 procent.
   
   ‘Deze hoge efficiëntie, gecombineerd met een eenvoudige productiemethode en weinig risico’s in de toeleveringsketen zorgt ervoor dat we op termijn ’s werelds goedkoopste groene waterstof kunnen leveren’, is te lezen op de website van het bedrijf.
   
   Besparing van miljarden dollars
   De kostenbesparing die de capillary-fed electrolyser mogelijk oplevert, liegt er niet om. Hysata legt uit: een project dat jaarlijks één miljoen ton groene waterstof produceert vereist ongeveer 14 gigawatt aan zonne- en windenergieparken met huidige elektrolyse-technologieën. Met de elektrolyser van Hysata is ‘slechts’ 11 gigawatt aan duurzame energiecapaciteit nodig voor hetzelfde productieniveau, resulterend in een kostenbesparing van ongeveer 3 miljard dollar.
   
   De elektrolyser wordt daarnaast gemaakt van grondstoffen die in overvloed aanwezig zijn, aldus Hysata. De hoge efficiëntie maakt dure koeling daarnaast overbodig.
   
   Doorbraaktechnologie?
   Het klinkt geweldig, maar de start-up moet de beloftes natuurlijk wel nog waarmaken. Een eerste investeringsronde stemt in ieder geval hoopvol. De Clean Energy Finance Corporation, een groene bank van de Australische overheid, investeerde miljoenen dollars in het bedrijf. Ook de investeringstak van Deense windturbinefabrikant Vestas behoort tot de groep van investeerders.
   
   Een andere investeerder is Kiko Ventures. Robert Trezona, medeoprichter van dat investeringsfonds, verwacht veel Hysata’s elektrolyser. “Ik werk al twintig jaar in clean tech en heb tientallen elektrolyse-technologieën beoordeeld”, zegt hij in een persbericht. “De elektrolyser van Hysata onderscheidt zich als een echte doorbraaktechnologie.”

   Waterstof: Langetermijn belegging of gebakken lucht?
   
   Toen we iets minder dan 18 maanden geleden in maart 2021 de VanEck Hydrogen Economy UCITS ETF lanceerden, was onze timing verre van perfect. Achteraf gezien deden we dat op het moment dat er veel interesse was in technologiebedrijven en schone technologie in het bijzonder: dit optimisme verdampte in de marktroutine van 2022.
   
   Het gevolg? Onze waterstof-ETF is flink gedaald in prijs, net als de grotere technologiemarkt.
   
   En toch is er ook veel vooruitgang geboekt in de zoektocht naar manieren om waterstof onderdeel uit te laten maken van de koolstofneutrale economie van de toekomst, als gedeeltelijke vervanging van fossiele brandstoffen. Dat zorgt ervoor dat waterstof belangrijker wordt als langetermijn belegging dan toen we de ETF lanceerden, alhoewel de aandelen zelf aanzienlijk goedkoper zijn.
   
   'Groene' waterstof kan een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan het verlagen van de hoeveelheid CO², omdat het wordt geproduceerd door middel van elektrolyse. Daarbij wordt geen CO² uitgestoten, als het wordt geproduceerd met hernieuwbare energie. Daarnaast kan waterstof bepaalde gaten in het toekomstige energiespectrum opvullen vanwege de hoge energiedichtheid en andere specifieke kwaliteiten. Dat betekent dat het een levensvatbare brandstof is voor zware transportvormen, zoals vrachtwagens en vliegtuigen, evenals voor de productie van staal en bepaalde verwarmingsvormen.
   
   Regeringen hebben groot vertrouwen in waterstof. Dat is goed terug te zien in het doel van de EU om in 2030 40 GW aan elektrolytische cellen geïnstalleerd te hebben. En hoewel groene waterstof nu nog minder dan 0,1% van de wereldwijde energiemix uitmaakt, kan dit volgens sommige schattingen tot 2050 uitgroeien tot een kwart.1
   
   Een aantal grote bedrijven doen al aanzienlijke investeringen en stellen 's werelds meest overvloedig aanwezige gas centraal in hun energietransitieplannen. Deze initiatieven worden inmiddels duidelijk ook omgezet in actie. In 2022 zijn er concrete plannen om waterstofproducten en -bedrijven te ontwikkelen.
   
   Airbus heeft bijvoorbeeld in 2020 aangekondigd dat ze in 2035 een CO²-neutraal, commercieel vliegtuig op de markt willen brengen. Ze zijn in 2022 begonnen met het testen van de waterstoftechnologieën die vereist zijn voor een A380-vliegtuig. Toch lijkt het erop dat ze voorbij worden gestreefd door een klein Nederlands bedrijf, Hydrogen Aircraft Powertrain and Storage System, dat in 2028 een passagiersvliegtuig voor 40-80 mensen van Amsterdam naar Londen wil laten vliegen. Dat is al over zes jaar.
   
   In de staalsector wil H2 Green Steel waterstof gaan inzetten om de CO²-uitstoot in de staalproductie met 95% te verlagen. Dit is een van de moeilijkste sectoren om CO²-neutraal te krijgen. Onlangs hebben ze een vergunning gekregen om hun eerste vestiging te bouwen in Boden, in het noorden van Zweden.
   
   En als laatste heeft Shell, een van de grootste olie- en gasleveranciers, recent aangekondigd dat ze in Rotterdam de eerste groene waterstoffabriek gaan bouwen.
   
   Bovenop de klimaatcrisis is de verschrikkelijke invasie van Rusland in Oekraïne nog een andere belangrijke factor die groene waterstof centraler stelt in ons leven. Door de oorlog is elk land zich nu bewust van de risico's van energiezekerheid. Nu Rusland energie als wapen inzet, is groene waterstof een energievorm die binnen de grenzen van een land kan worden geproduceerd.
   
   Voor die beleggers die denken dat nu een goed moment is om te beleggen in waterstof vormt de VanEck Hydrogen Economy UCITS ETF de beste en zuiverste ETF om dat te doen. In zo'n jonge sector zijn er nog geen bedrijven die al hun omzet al uit waterstof kunnen halen. Maar onze ETF volgt de bedrijven die ten minste de helft van hun omzet halen uit producten en diensten die gerelateerd zijn aan het groene gas.

In addition to the investment, a memorandum of understanding provides American the opportunity to order up to 100 engines from ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric powertrain development program. The engines are intended to power regional jet aircraft with zero emissions.

    ZeroAvia is working to achieve certain type certifications of its innovative propulsion technology that will pave the way for the engines to be incorporated into the regional jet market in the future. The ZA2000-RJ powertrain is anticipated to enable passengers to fly in zero-emission regional jets as early as the late 2020s.

    Powerhouse Energy Group has agreed on a heads of terms with Hydrogen Utopia International for a proposed joint development of a site at Lanespark in Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. HUI and Powerhouse have agreed, in principle, to establish a joint venture vehicle owned equally by each company to which PHE and HUI would contribute development costs for the Lanespark Project on 50:50 basis.
    
    It is anticipated the Lanespark Project would, if developed, lead to PHE’s first operational full scale waste plastic to hydrogen facility outside of the UK.

    ROTTERDAM - Olie- en gasbedrijf BP breidt zijn netwerk met snelladers drastisch uit. Op korte termijn gaat het van 66 naar ruim 1600 oplaadpunten. Nu consumenten vaker voor elektrisch rijden kiezen, worden die stations snel winstgevender dan de benzinestations. „Een goede stap in energietransitie, maar we gaan niet snel genoeg”, zegt directeur Karen de Lathouder van BP Nederland.

    Nu zie je het misschien nog niet tijdens de lange rit naar de zuidelijke landen en terug, maar er gaat zich langs de kant van de weg een metamorfose voltrekken. „Tankstations zien er straks heel anders uit, met veel meer zware snelladers, met meer aanbod aan biobrandstoffen, waterstof misschien. En meer diensten. Zoals je boodschappen ophalen. Elektrisch laden vergt altijd even, er is dan meer tijd voor klanten”, zegt Karen de Lathouder (44), sinds 1 januari van dit jaar topvrouw van de op Shell na grootste olieraffinaderij van Europa. Die laadstations krijgen meer service voorspelt ze, uitkijkend op de zonovergoten installaties op de Rotterdamse Maasvlakte. „Zoals we nu AH to Go erbij hebben.”

    In Amsterdam plaatste BP vorig jaar achttien snelladers voor elektrische auto’s, dit jaar volgen er nog veertien. Meer volledig nieuwe tankstations in Nederland erbij is ’lastig’, verklaart De Lathouder. Overal is de uitgifte van grond door de overheid drastisch aan banden gelegd. Mede dankzij de topbedragen die er in het tweede kwartaal voor een vat olie werden neergeteld, wist BP in die maanden een recordwinst te boeken. Tegelijkertijd heeft het bedrijf zijn eigen klimaatdoelen in februari naar boven bijgesteld.
    
    Groene waterstof
    De Lathouder, eerder werkzaam bij Shell, AkzoNobel en Orpic in Oman, zoekt vanuit Europoort met 2000 werknemers naar een groter marktaandeel in schone energie. De Lathouder heeft een dubbelfunctie: ze beheert de raffinaderij en is ceo. De Papendrechtse van geboorte leerde als gepromoveerd ingenieur aan de TU Delft alle facetten van de raffinage kennen. Ze werkte in de zware wisseldiensten op een boorplatform en bij BP-installaties in Duitsland en Pernis. Nu is ze naast haar dubbele baan soms instructeur in de sportschool waarin ze zelf investeerde.

    Het Britse BP, al vijftig jaar kern van de Rotterdamse haven, zoekt meer de consumentenmarkt op. Maar, anders dan Shell, zal het in Nederland niet de energiemarkt van contracten met groene stroom en warmte opgaan. „Voorlopig niet. Ik vraag me af of zoiets zoden aan de dijk zet als je CO2-uitstoot fors wilt verlagen. En dat wil ik. Je maakt een veel grotere slag met afvang van CO2 in lege gasvelden en met groene waterstof om de producten die de raffinaderij levert te decarboniseren”, zegt ze. „Daarmee beperk je die uitstoot op veel grotere schaal.”
    
    Jonge professionals kloppen de laatste tijd vaker aan de deur, zegt ze. „Omdat ze weten dat je bij een oliebedrijf op een veel grotere schaal impact kunt maken als je wilt verduurzamen. Dat is intern wel wat omschakelen voor personeel. Als jij twintig jaar in de olie hebt gewerkt, is het echt een omslag als iedereen over waterstof begint.”
    
    BP gaat meer schonere brandstof uit de raffinaderij leveren. Maar ze waarschuwt dat ’zeker komende tien jaar’ nog heel veel olie en gas nodig blijven. „Er is nu veel te weinig capaciteit uit zon en wind om aan alle energiebehoefte van iedereen te voldoen. Net zo in komende jaren.” BP Nederland schreef zichzelf in voor een tender om bij de Hollandse Kust Zuid twee gebieden te mogen vullen met windmolens, elektrolyse-apparatuur en kabels, om zo onder andere waterstof te maken. En voor volgend jaar mikt het op nog zo’n Nederlands offshore-gebied.
    
    „Wij moeten niet ontkennen dat we een olie- en gasmaatschappij zijn. Van olie maken we hier via raffinage zoveel producten die we nodig hebben, dagelijks. Maar ook autobumpers, interieurs van vliegtuigen. keukenonderdelen. Dat vervang je hier misschien wel deels, maar nog niet in de rest van de wereld.”
    
    Onderhoud
    De BP-raffinaderij, bijna vijftig kilometer verwijderd van hartje Rotterdam, staat voor de mega-operatie van het zesjaarlijkse onderhoud. Prettige bijkomstigheid is altijd dat het complex van veertig voetbalvelden dan nieuwe en schonere techniek kan invoegen, zegt De Lathouder. Intussen bouwt zij sinds maart het gebruik van peperduur gas met zo’n 60% af.

    Het raffinagecomplex zal er straks niet heel anders uitzien. „Binnen de raffinaderij verwerk je altijd moleculen. Dat hoeft niet olie en gas te zijn”, verwijst ze naar waterstof. „Dat kan bijna allemaal via dezelfde leidingen.”
    
    Deze raffinaderij moet rond 2035 CO2-neutraal zijn. Dat deze industrie niet voorop loopt, komt volgens haar deels door de historie. „We zijn van oudsher een olie- en gasbedrijf dat zich omvormt en op enorm grote schaal de CO2-uitstoot afbouwt.” Buiten draait de raffinage op volle toeren. Het Britse concern neemt geen nieuw Russisch gas of olie meer af, en weert Russische transportschepen. BP besloot vroeg om haar miljardenbelang in oliebedrijf Rosneft te verkopen.

    De restgassen die uit de Rotterdamse raffinage vrijkomen, verbrandt BP normaal gesproken, maar daar zal in de toekomst in samenwerking met Shell, Exxon, Vopak en Air Liquide ’blauwe’ waterstof van gemaakt worden. Dat is de klassieke ’grijze’ waterstofproductie waarbij wel CO2 wordt afgevangen en opgeslagen.
    
    Hoe groen ook allemaal, voor de buitenwacht blijft BP, het bedrijf van Deep Horizon, het boorplatform dat afbrandde en in de Golf van Mexico aan de zuidkust van de VS met dikke smurrie olie op de kust voor een natuurramp zorgde. Het olieconcern betaalde $67 miljard aan schadevergoedingen.

    „BP is onderdeel van het probleem, maar neemt verantwoordelijkheid om overal betaalbare energie te leveren, met steeds minder uitstoot”, zegt De Lathouder. „Het kijkt nu vooruit: hoe moet het anders, snel en veilig? Ik heb bij veel bedrijven gewerkt, maar op deze schaal heb ik dat nergens gezien. Intern word ik er duidelijk op aangesproken of het niet nog sneller kan. Ik heb die prikkel niet nodig, maar het zegt alles. Doorpakken, op z’n Rotterdams, ik houd ervan.”
    
    In de komende acht jaar zegt BP 50% van de CO2-uitstoot te verminderen. De Lathouwer: „Dat is heel veel, en ook niet niks als je daarnaast ook nog wilt blijven bestaan. In Nederland hebben we namelijk €5 miljard aan investeringen gepland staan. Dat moet je ergens van betalen.”

    easyJet and Rolls-Royce announced a ground-breaking new partnership, H2ZERO, that will pioneer the development of hydrogen combustion engine technology capable of powering a range of aircraft, including those in the narrow-body market segment. Both companies have committed to working together on a series of engine tests on the ground, starting later this year and have a shared ambition to take the technology into the air. The objective of the partnership is to demonstrate that hydrogen has the potential to power a range of aircraft from the mid-2030s onwards.
    
    While Rolls-Royce will bring its expertise in engine development and combustion systems, easyJet will contribute its operational knowledge and experience to H2ZERO and will also directly invest in the test programme.
    
    Through H2ZERO, the companies will support an early concept ground test of a Rolls-Royce AE 2100 engine in the UK later this year. This will be followed by a full-scale ground test of a Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 jet engine - a range of location options are being assessed for this including the Rolls-Royce test facility in Mississippi, USA. The programme will build on initial hydrogen combustion and fuel system rig tests that Rolls-Royce is undertaking with both Cranfield and Loughborough universities.
    
    H2ZERO is inspired by the global, UN-backed Race to Zero campaign that both companies have signed up to, committing to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
    
    The agreement announced follows a research project that both companies began in 2021, developing market analysis, driving specifications, investigating infrastructure and regulatory requirements to support the use of hydrogen in aviation.

    HyCC Launches Hydrogen Project in Port of Amsterdam

    Hydrogen company HyCC has launched Project H2era to construct a 500-megawatt green hydrogen plant in the Amsterdam port area. The project, launched in cooperation with the Port of Amsterdam, is a major step forward in the development of the regional hydrogen economy to help decarbonize industry and mobility. HyCC intends to start operations of the new plant in the Amsterdam port area in 2027. HyCC and the Port of Amsterdam have completed a first feasibility study and the project will be further developed in the coming months during the pre-FEED study phase.
    
    H2era will produce green hydrogen and oxygen from renewable electricity and water in a process called electrolysis. Discussions are currently underway with various parties to use the hydrogen for the decarbonization of industries in the region. In addition, the hydrogen can be used for green mobility. In the future, the new plant can also be connected to a national pipeline network to enable exchange of hydrogen between industrial clusters.
    
    The regional energy strategy foresees the use of large amounts of green hydrogen to decarbonize industry and mobility in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. Local hydrogen production based on electricity from renewable sources is an essential part of the transition, in addition to imports.
    
    HyCC is also working with Port of Amsterdam and Tata Steel on a 100 megawatt plant at the site of Tata Steel IJmuiden, called project H2ermes.

    Zero-emission solutions for commercial aviation developer ZeroAvia has announced a memorandum of understanding with PowerCell Sweden AB, a leading hydrogen fuel cell stack manufacturer, that will see joint development and annual series deliveries of at least 5,000 aviation-optimized Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell stacks between 2024 and 2028. As part of the MoU, PowerCell intends to establish a UK presence for the first time, building a production team alongside ZeroAvia's production facilities.The parties expect to reach a final agreement in the third quarter 2022.
    
    The companies plan to jointly modify existing PowerCell stacks for optimal performance within ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric, zero-emission aviation powertrains.
    
    The partnership will see both parties continuing work together to modify existing PowerCell stacks for optimal performance within ZeroAvia's hydrogen-electric, zero-emission aviation powertrains. PowerCell intends to assemble the modified stacks for incorporation into ZeroAvia's prototype, and later certified powertrains.
    
    PowerCell has been a key supplier of low temperature PEM fuel cells as part of ZeroAvia's pioneering efforts to develop a certifiable 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain underneath the HyFlyer II project, supported by the UK Government through the ATI program. ZeroAvia plans to power 9-19 seat commercial aircraft up to 300 nautical miles using its ZA600 powertrains by 2024 - enabling guilt-free flights on routes such as London to Edinburgh and Stockholm to Malmo.
    
    After conducting demonstration of 6-seat R&D prototypes, ZeroAvia is preparing for the inaugural test flight of its 600kW hydrogen-electric engine in the coming days, including the use of PowerCell fuel cell stacks as part of these systems. The company is also retrofitting a second Dornier-228 testbed in Hollister, California, to conduct further flight tests and demonstrations in the important North American market.

    Isuzu Motors, Toyota Motor, Hino Motors and Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation announced they would jointly plan and develop light-duty fuel cell electric trucks for the mass-market. The joint initiative is expected to contribute to the realization of a hydrogen society, as well as carbon neutrality by expanding the options available for customer use and increasing the demand for hydrogen. The companies will also promote the introduction of FC electric trucks to the market along with their widespread use.
    
    CJPT will be responsible for planning the jointly developed mass-market light-duty FC electric trucks. The four companies will mobilize their combined knowledge - the truck technology that Isuzu and Hino have accumulated over the years as well as Toyota's FC technology - in pursuit of products that meet the performance and conditions required for light-duty trucks. It will be introduced to the market after January 2023 and used by the partners at actual distribution sites in Fukushima Prefecture and Tokyo social implementation projects.
    
    In this way, the companies will promote sustainable and practical initiatives toward the widespread use of light-duty FC electric trucks and hydrogen, while also responding to customer needs at a high level.

    Zero-emission solutions for commercial aviation developer ZeroAvia has signed a memorandum of understanding to partner with The Red Sea Development Company to test and develop zero-emission travel across a new luxury tourism destination with a focus on environmental sustainability and regeneration. TRSDC plans to operate a fleet of around 30 seaplane variants of the Cessna Caravan to transport guests across the destination. ZeroAvia has been commissioned to explore retrofitting the planes with its powertrain technology and test its viability for offering clean, commercial travel.
    
    Under the deal, TRSDC and ZeroAvia will work together to develop the technology, including collaborating on a roadmap for delivering the production, supply and infrastructure necessary to support hydrogen-powered air travel in Saudi Arabia.

    H-TEC SYSTEMS is selling an HCS type PEM electrolyser to Wenger Hydrogen GmbH, building on a successful collaboration in the past. Wenger Hydrogen is the general contractor for the project, which is being implemented in Switzerland. The plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of next year.
    
    The Hydrogen Cube system is suitable for multi-megawatt PEM electrolysis systems and enables gradual expansion and scaling up to ten megawatts and more. In the Wenger Hydrogen project, the H-TEC SYSTEMS system converts renewable energy from hydropower into green hydrogen with an electrical output of two megawatts. In the future, up to 900 kilograms of green hydrogen will be produced every day, which will then be used as an emission-free energy source for fuel cell vehicles.
    
    It was only in the spring of this year that H-TEC SYSTEMS presented its Hydrogen Cube System to a wide audience, which is essentially based on the well-known and industrially used technology of the ME450 PEM electrolyser.
    
    The construction includes a drying system that ensures the processing of the hydrogen to a hydrogen quality of 5.0. Without this optional drying system, the quality is 3.0, which is suitable for many industrial processes. After drying, the hydrogen can be used directly in fuel cells. In addition, the system is supplemented by fresh water treatment and heat extraction. The heat is then fed into the heating network and thus provides an additional source of income during operation. By using the process heat, the very high system efficiency of 74% can be significantly increased again. These modules are optional and were ordered for the corresponding project.
