    Robert Bosch, Tata Consultancy Services and TomTom have joined GENIVI, becoming the latest new members of the growing global electronics alliance.

    GENIVI is an automotive and consumer electronics industry association driving the development and adoption of an open-source in-vehicle infotainment platform.

    “Our primary goal in this alliance is to lower development times and reduce development costs,” said Michael Bolle, senior vice president of Bosch Car Multimedia’s Automotive Navigation and Infotainment Systems.

    Germany-based Bosch is the world’s largest automotive supplier.

    Tata Consultancy Services, an IT services provider that belongs to India’s Tata group, employs more than 174,000 people in 42 countries.

    Netherlands-based TomTom is the leading maker of navigation systems. The company is increasingly a player in in-car systems. It offers integrated navigation solutions for big volume brands as Renault and Mazda.

    With the latest additions, GENIVI now has almost 100 member companies.

    Vormgeving en luxe hebben in jaren niet meer zo centraal gestaan als deze week op de North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Daarmee proberen de grote autoproducenten, die zich nauwelijks nog van elkaar kunnen onderscheiden met zaken als veiligheid, prestaties en zuinigheid, hun merken nieuw leven in te blazen. (Wat dacht je van navigatie)
    ,,Het grote thema dit jaar is styling'', zegt Jeremy Anwyl van de Amerikaanse autowebsite Edmunds.com. Design-elementen komen nu terug bij modellen waarbij die eerder nauwelijks een rol speelden. Enkele jaren geleden waren compacte auto's nogal saai omdat fabrikanten het idee hadden dat mensen ze puur kochten als een vervoersmiddel, aldus Anwyl. Nu zijn ze visueel ook aantrekkelijke producten geworden.

    Dat Detroit meer in het teken staat van ontwerp blijkt onder meer uit de wedergeboorte van de agressief ogende Dodge Dart van Chrysler, een succesnummer van het concern in de jaren 70. Ook Ford deed zijn best om zijn nieuwe Fusion, de Amerikaanse variant van de Mondeo, aantrekkelijker te maken.

    Ook de nieuwe gestroomlijnde 3-serie van BMW en de Mini Paceman, de eerste zogeheten sports activity coupé van het merk, springen in het oog. Porsche bracht een wereldpremière naar Detroit met de kersverse 911 cabrio, die volgens de Duitse sportautofabrikant ,,op alle fronten'' is verbeterd.

    De autofabrikanten presenteren 27 nieuwe modellen op de Amerikaanse autotentoonstelling. De deuren gaan zaterdag 14 tot en met zondag 22 januari open voor het publiek.
