DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Best Buy Co. (BBY) said its revenue in December--part of the key holiday selling period for retailers--fell 1.6% from year-earlier levels as softness continued in its sales of televisions and entertainment software.
The giant consumer-electronics seller said sales in December dropped to $8.4 billion as same-store sales declined 4%. It said its domestic segment's revenue decreased 3.2% from a year earlier, hurt by softer TV and entertainment-software sales, while international revenue rose 4.5%, helped by currency fluctuation. Same-store sales fell 5% domestically and 0.1% abroad.
Shares of the company rose 1% to $35.60 in recent premarket trading.
Chief Executive Brian Dunn said the results "were within our expected range of outcomes for the month," and the company reiterated its full-year guidance.
Best Buy has been hurt by consumers' concern over spending as unemployment remains high nationwide. The company in December reported a 4.4% drop in its fiscal third-quarter profit, hurt by weakness of TV and videogame sales, and at the time said it was losing market share.
