Iran uses Germany bank to beat sanctions
    Jul 19, 2010 at 07:41

Iranians worry about future as sanctions bite

WASHINGTON - A small Iranian-owned bank in Germany has been used by the Iranian government to go around international economic sanctions and do business on behalf of blacklisted organizations, The Wall Street Journal reported late Sunday.

Citing unnamed Western officials, the newspaper said the bank in question is the European-Iranian Trade Bank AG (EIH).

According to the report, the financial institution has done over a billion dollars of business for Iranian companies associated with Iran's military and ballistic missile procurement programs, including companies sanctioned by the United States, the United Nations and the European Union.

The UN Security Council slapped a fourth set of sanctions against Iran in June for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment work, the most sensitive part of Tehran's controversial atomic drive.

The new UN measures authorize states to conduct high-seas inspections of vessels believed to be ferrying banned items to Iran and add 40 entities to a list of people and groups subject to travel restrictions and financial sanctions.

Meanwhile, the US administration added Iranian individuals and firms to a blacklist as part of US and European efforts to tighten the screws on Iran.

The new US sanctions target insurance companies, oil firms and shipping lines linked to Iran's nuclear or missile programmes as well as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and Iran's defense minister Ahmad Vahidi.

The Journal said that EIH's business partners include units of Iran's Defense Industries Organization, the Aerospace Industries Organization and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

These companies are believed to be involved in the development of Iran's nuclear and missile programs.

In 2009, EIH appears to have been involved in a broad sanctions-evasion scheme, conducting transactions on behalf of Iran's Bank Sepah that has been sanctioned by the United Nations, Europe and the United States for facilitating Iran's weapons trade and proliferation activities, the paper said.

EIH was founded by a group of Iranian merchants in Hamburg in 1971, according to The Journal. It operates openly under the supervision of German bank regulators, but the US Department of Treasury blacklisted it for alleged illicit business with Iran, the report noted.

    Tehran considers currency switch
    Monday 19th July, 2010

The Islamic Republic of Iran is considering a switch from the euro to a Middle-Eastern currency for its crude oil sales.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is considering a switch from the euro to a Middle-Eastern currency for its crude oil sales.

A change from the euro to the UAE dirhams could be a move for the country to fend off the impact of financial sanctions soon to be adopted by the European Union.

It has also been suggested that Tehran fears euro transactions are no longer safe and could be blocked by EU member states adhering to the sanctions.

The International Oil Daily industry newsletter said that Iran had already asked its European buyers about the possible change.

Iran's crude oil exports are priced in dollars but already some of its customers pay in other currencies.

New EU sanctions, which were agreed to in June, are expected to be approved by the end of this month.

Iran and the West set for confrontation

The former chief of the CIA Michael Hayden has said as he appeared on CNN news that confrontation between the United States and Iran is becoming ever more likely.

In Hayden’s estimates, Iran has come closest to producing nuclear weapons and is thereby destabilizing the situation in the region. A strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities was considered by the Bush administration as a last-ditch move and far from the worst one.

As politicians argue about a solution, the situation involving Iran continues to deteriorate. Last month the UN Security Council introduced new sanctions against Tehran following its refusal to curtail a uranium enrichment program. The US and the EU followed suit. On Tuesday the EU is introducing a ban on foreign investments in Iran’s oil and gas sector, on the sale of oil and liquefied gas purification technology and is cutting petrol supplies to the country. Other plans for Iran include freezing banks’ and company assets which could be used to finance nuclear research. A thumb-up for these measures was achieved at the EU summit on June 17th. Expert Vladimir Sazhin comments:

"The recent sanctions are fairly tough and are making themselves felt, he says. Apparently, Tehran is alarmed. The EU and US sanctions hit areas other than the UN sanctions. For this reason, Iran is maneuvering to get out of them."

The Iranian leadership is planning to offer a nuclear fuel swap to the International Atomic Energy Agency. A statement to that effect was voiced in the wake of a ministerial meeting of Turkey, Iran and Brazil in Istanbul. In the meantime, Tehran is getting ready for fundamental research in nuclear fusion. Apparently, a conflicting approach of this kind suggests that Iran is determined to get out of giving response to the questions asked by the IAEA and the UN Security Council.

Ahmadinejad: "EU zal sancties tegen Iran snel betreuren"

(afp/adv)
