Electric Vehicles are a new technology to enter the mobility world, which until recently have
remained too limited in range and performance to be a viable solution. With several major automotive
manufacturers now releasing first production cars in the next two years, TomTom, TNO, e-laad.nl and
Quipment are working together to ensure that the driver’s experience of an electric vehicle is simple,
enjoyable, and stress-free. One of the main concerns with moving to electric vehicles is not being
stranded at the side of the road, with no battery power – something called “range anxiety”. Together,
the project partners are working together to solve this, both for consumers and businesses.
TomTom, the world’s leading provider of navigation solutions and digital maps, aims to create
an intelligent navigation system, designed for electric vehicles. This is created with an adaptive EV
routing algorithm, based on real and modelled data, to navigate to the desired destination safely within
battery capacity, with sufficient remaining to reach a charging station. TNO provides the advanced
modelling information on which to create this routing.
To complete the chain, the availability and reservation of booking stations also needs to be
present, to ensure that users have access to charging stations when they need them. e-laad.nl, a
foundation formed by Dutch grid operators, is working to roll out a charging infrastructure and aims to solve this problem. Together with TomTom, an end-to-end booking service is created to empower the
consumer.
Electric vehicles also have big potential for urban mobility, with future plans for green-zone
creation in city environments. Quipment, a leader in public mobility telematics, aims to apply the
intelligent EV use to fleet management, where private businesses can capitalize on providing mobility
where otherwise not possible. Together, the partners create a collection of enablers for the future of
electric vehicles to ensure an easy transition from traditional combustion-powered vehicles.
