    Alcoa kan beurzen matig begeesteren

    De Amerikaanse aandelenmarkten zijn met winsten kleiner dan een procent gesloten. Retailers wonnen terrein door overwegend beter dan verwachte omzetcijfers. In Europa waren de winsten meer afgetekend. Beleggers trokken zich op aan de beter dan verwachte kwartaalcijfers van aluminiumreus Alcoa. De indexwinsten, ook die van de Bel20, liepen op tot meer dan 1 procent.

    Aziatische landen snellen dollar te hulp

    Verschillende Aziatische centrale banken hebben donderdag geïntervenieerd in de valutamarkt in een poging de wegglijdende dollar te ondersteunen. Dat meldt de Britse zakenkrant Financial Times op zijn website. De Aziatische landen zijn bezorgd over de impact van een zwakke dollar op hun exportgerichte economieën.

    Winst Alcoa vertaalt zich in winst voor Europese beurzen

    De Europese aandelenmarkten zijn donderdag ruim een procent hoger gesloten. Vooral de grondstoffenwaarden en de financials presteerden sterk, nadat de Amerikaanse aluminiumgroep Alcoa woensdagavond had uitgepakt met winst in plaats van verlies.

    Bank of America leurt met Lehman-claim

    Bank of America staat volgens ingewijden op het punt om een claim van 800 miljoen dollar tegen de failliete zakenbank Lehman Brothers te verkopen. Dat meldt persagentschap Bloomberg. De potentiële koper is vermoedelijk een hefboomfonds.

    Vlaams bedrijf zonne-energie strikt Chinees supercontract

    European bourses seen lower

    EUROPEAN OUTLOOK & US/ASIAN SUMMARIES:

    Hints that the U.S. Fed is looking at tightening as the U.S. economy picks up have prompted market players to take profit on recent gains in stocks and commodities. European bourses are seen opening lower, with government debt mixed. The euro and other currencies are lower against the dollar, with oil and spot gold down as well.

    European bourses are likely to open lower, pausing after their latest spate of gains, illustrating that investors are inclined to enter the weekend with some prudent profit-taking.
    For Friday's opening, IG Markets is calling the FTSE down 17 at 5138, the DAX off 20 5697, and the CAC off 20 at 3787.
    Some apprehension remains as "investors need to see evidence that bottom line revenues are on the up" via sales, not cost-reduction, says Angus Campbell, trader at Capital Spreads.
    While gold prices recently made new highs, 10-year Treasury yields remained relatively low, commented Bernard McAlinden, strategist at NCB Stockbrokers. "That's not inflation fears but expectations that interest rates will stay low and that's a positive for equity markets," he said.
    The European Central Bank kept rates at 1% and the Bank of England stayed pat at 0.5% on Thursday on the one-year anniversary of coordinated central-bank interest-rate cuts.
    James Knightley at ING Bank the BOE's next move will be to tighten monetary policy even though growth is likely to be relatively slow. "We expect the BOE to start moving monetary policy to a less accommodative footing, and favor late 2Q 2010 as being the likely timing of the first rate hike, although the actual date could be affected by the General Election," he says.
    U.S. stock futures are mixed on Friday, after markets rose Thursday as Alcoa kicked off the earnings season on a positive note, while Macy's, Home Depot and other discretionary stocks climbed on retailers' first collective same-store sales gain since August 2008.
    Still, the market's major indexes came off session highs, as the excitement over the earnings and sales reports and a bigger-than-expected drop in weekly jobless claims seemed to wear off a bit.
    "The market was clearly looking for an excuse to go up, and the Alcoa numbers were definitely a good excuse to rally," said Jonathan Vyorst, portfolio manager with Paradigm Capital Management. However, he added, "the retailing numbers weren't good, they're just not as bad as they could have been."
    Vyorst is concerned that at some point, the market will stop rallying on results that are above expectations but not necessarily good.
    Asian stock markets are mixed Friday as investors pulled to the sidelines, waiting for the U.S. reporting season to get into full swing. Resource and energy stocks are pacing the gainers for a second day running even as commodity prices cool off a bit after recent rallies.
    "With a rush of U.S. earnings starting next week, traders still can't determine which way Wall Street is moving," said Nikko Cordial strategist Tsuyoshi Kawata.
    "All this talk about the global economy turning the corner does hold water, but valuations sometimes run ahead of fundamentals, and I believe we are in that situation right now," said DMG analyst James Lim in Singapore.
