    Marshall & Ilsley loses 68 cents a share

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Marshall & Ilsley Corp. said Tuesday that it lost $248 million, or 68 cents a share. In the same period last year Marshall & Ilsley lost $83 million, or 32 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet Research estimated, on average, a loss of 65 cents a share. Results include debt-termination gains of 10 cents a share, credit-related expenses of 12 cents a share, and dividends paid to U.S. Treasury under Capital Purchase Program of 7 cents a share.

    Invesco profit falls 20%

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Asset manager Invesco Ltd.said Tuesday its third-quarter profit fell to $105.2 million, or 24 cents a share, from $131.8 million, or 33 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Total operating revenues were $705.8 million, a 14.7% drop. Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research had estimated, on average, earnings of 23 cents a share on total sales of $664.5 million. Invesco said late Monday that it would buy Morgan Stanley's /quotes/comstock/13*!ms/quotes/nls/ms (MS 33.13, +0.14, +0.42%) Van Kampen Investments mutual-fund unit for $1.5 billion.

    Western Union earnings fall 25%

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Western Union Corp. said Tuesday that third-quarter earnings were $181 million, or 26 cents a share, compared to $241 million, or 33 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue fell 5% to $1.31 billion compared to $1.38 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet Research estimated, on average, earnings per share of 32 cents and sales of $1.28 billion. For 2009, Western Union sees earnings per share in the range of $1.15 to $1.20 and adjusted earnings per share of $1.23 to $1.28.

    Economisch gezien bevinden we ons in een bijzondere situatie, een situatie die eigenlijk geen precedent heeft gekend. Als gevolg van de crisis zijn we nieuwe paden gaan verkennen, waarbij het allesbehalve zeker is naar waar die gaan leiden.
    Ivan Van de Cloot, hoofdeconoom Itinera: “De economie bevindt zich eigenlijk in een soort zuurstoftent, we worden kunstmatig beademd. Economisch gezien bevinden we ons in een heel labiele, instabiele situatie. Daar horen uiteraard heel wat risico’s bij. Anderzijds raast de beurs maar door. Soms geeft me dat een wat ongemakkelijk gevoel.”

    De vraag luidt uiteraard wie gelijk gaat krijgen. De beurs rekent op een goede afloop van het avontuur, zoveel is duidelijk. Van de Cloot: “Inderdaad bestaat er een kans op een goede afloop. We mogen anderzijds niet vergeten dat we bezig zijn aan een groot experiment op het vlak van economisch beleid, waarvan de afloop moeilijk te voorspellen is. We weten namelijk niet zeker dat het wel degelijk goed gaat aflopen, hoewel de beurs daar wel van uitgaat. De beleggers vergeten soms dat er nog wel degelijk risico’s op ons pad liggen en dat vind ik toch wel onrustwekkend.”

    Macintosh boekt omzetdaling 6,3% in KW3 2009

    AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Macintosh Retail Group nv, bekend van de ketens Scapino en Belcompany, maar ook van de website ikzoekeentas.nl, heeft in het derde kwartaal van 2009 een 6,3% lagere omzet geboekt dan in de vergelijkbare periode een jaar eerder, als gevolg van de zwakke maanden juli en augustus.

    Ook het bedrijfsresultaat over de verslagperiode zal lager uitkomen dan een jaar eerder, "ondanks een hoger bedrijfsresultaat in september".

    In de eerste weken van oktober ontwikkelde de omzet zich in lijn met vorig jaar.

    Omdat het belangrijkste deel van het vierde kwartaal nog moet komen en de onzekerheid over het economische herstel voortduurt, doet de onderneming geen voorspelling ten aanzien van de resultaten over het laatste kwartaal.

    Het aandeel sloot dinsdag onveranderd op EUR14,25.

    NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Airline passenger revenue plummeted 19% in September year-to-year, an industry trade group said Tuesday -- but it's not for lack of business.

    Passenger volume slipped just 2% in September year-to-year, according to the Air Transport Association. The group blamed the sales plunge on a decline in air fares, noting that the average price to fly one mile fell 18% in September, compared with a year ago.

    "The demand for air travel remains weak," said ATA Chief Executive James May, in a statement. "While other sectors may be seeing signs that the economy is getting back on track, the airline industry has faced challenges in its effort to generate revenue."

    September was the 11th consecutive month of declining passenger revenue versus a year ago, and the 10th consecutive month of ticket price declines, the ATA said.

    National home prices are forecast to shrink another 11%. Miami, Las Vegas and Phoenix will record steep declines, but a few cities will actually post gains.

    NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- If you thought home prices were bottoming out, you may be wrong. They're expected to head a lot lower.

    Home values are predicted to drop in 342 out of 381 markets during the next year, according to a new forecast of real estate prices.

    Overall, the national median home price is predicted to drop 11.3% by June 30, 2010, according to Fiserv, a financial information and analysis firm. For the following year, the firm anticipates some stabilization with prices rising 3.6%.

    Begbies forecasts 40,000 businesses will go bust.

    The rise in business confidence is a temporary lull before a fresh slump that will see up to 40,000 businesses to go bust next year, a new study has forecast.

    Begbies Traynor, the restructuring advisory firm, said there was growing evidence that Britain was only at the mid-point of a "W" shaped recession.

    Although the number of companies in a seriously distressed state fell in absolute terms both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter, it said, it believes a renewed bloodbath of businesses is likely in 2010 and into 2011 with between 30,000 and 40,000 failing.

    However, Ric Traynor, executive chairman of Begbies Traynor, said Britain "may be in the eye of the storm".

    He said: "We support the view of many leading economists that the UK is currently at the midpoint of a "W" shaped recession. There is every reason to suggest that the unemployment and insolvency peaks of this recession remain some way off.

    What Does It Mean to Be Too Big to Fail? It is pretty clear to me that the Fed and Treasury decided to let Lehman (or whatever bank tottered next, rather) fail, pour encourager les autres--and that despite months of preparation, they didn't foresee the meltdown in the money markets that this failure touched off. Hence all the subsequent bailouts: no one could be quite sure what the fallout from further failures might be.
