    Generex Biotech awarded second Lebanese Patent Co announces the Ministry of Economy and Trade Intellectual Property Protection Office in Lebanon granted the Company a second Lebanese patent titled, "Orally Absorbed Pharmaceutical Formulation and Method of Administration." The patent contains claims to pharmaceutical formulations effective to deliver a pharmaceutical agent across oral membranes, methods of administration, and metered dose dispensers containing the pharmaceutical formulations.

    TORONTO (CP) - Generex Biotechnology Corp. is on the verge of obtaining government approvals for its Oral-lyn insulin mouth spray in jurisdictions other than Ecuador, the first country that approved the product for use by diabetics, CEO Anna Gluskin says.

    "That is something we couldn't claim last year," Gluskin told shareholders Tuesday at the Toronto-based company's annual meeting.

    The Nasdaq-traded firm (Nasdaq:GNBT) is hoping for approvals from 13 countries in the Middle East in six to eight months, Canadian acceptance within 18 months, and a U.S. regulatory thumbs-up in 28 months. It also continues to seek approval from countries in Latin America.

    "We're really very hopeful. This is going to be a great year," Gluskin said in an interview after the meeting.

    "We are close in Canada and we are progressing in the United States," she said. "The response we've had from Health Canada has been phenomenal."

    Oral-lyn is administered through a small handheld canister that delivers a spray of insulin into the mouth when squeezed. The product is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, not through the lungs, and serves as an alternative to injections.

    A similar product, Exubera, made by Pfizer, delivers insulin into the lungs and comes in a larger container, Gluskin said.

    Generex has also developed a chewing gum to treat Type 2 diabetes that delivers the generic drug metformin, used to regulate blood sugar levels.

    Metformin, when taken in tablet form, can cause unpleasant side-effects including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

    The gum has potential for overweight children who are increasingly being diagnosed with what used to be characterized as adult-onset diabetes, said Dr. Gerald Bernstein, the company's vice-president and director of medical affairs. Bernstein said Exubera has been well received by pediatric endocrinologists who have trouble getting children to take metformin tablets.

    "The possibilities for the gum are really tremendous," said Bernstein.

    The company is also selling fruit-flavoured glucose sprays over the counter at drugstores across North America. The spray, which has the same function as glucose tablets, can be used whenever a diabetic feels his or her blood sugar levels are dropping.

    Other sprays in development include painkillers and a formulation to combat severe allergic reactions.

    The company is also researching vaccines for avian flu, prostate and breast cancer and SARS.

    Robert Wasserman, a health-care analyst with Jesup and Lamont, said the company is poised to graduate from the ranks of biotechnology developers into the category of speciality pharmaceutical producers.

    "Generex has a deep pipeline, an active industry education program (particularly in the worldwide diabetes market), growing product sales, and plenty of financial resources to provide investors with value-producing progress in the near future," Wasserman wrote in a February note.
