Bird Flu Kills Swans in Iran, Spreads Further in EU (Update3)
Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Bird flu killed wild swans in Iran, opening up a new front of outbreaks, as Hungary became the sixth European Union member country to confirm infections in birds.

An Italian laboratory found the lethal H5N1 virus in samples from 153 swans that died at the Anzali Wetland in Iran's northwest Rasht region, Hossein Hassani, head of the country's veterinary organization, said in a report posted yesterday on the Web site of the World Organization for Animal Health.

Greece, Italy, Hungary, Ukraine and Romania have had confirmed outbreaks, adding to suspected infections in Austria and Slovenia. The disease in birds creates more opportunity for human infection and increases the risk of the virus changing into a pandemic form. Fifteen people have died of bird flu this year, including seven in Indonesia and four in Turkey, according to the World Health Organization.

``The fact that it's getting into Europe probably means there is going to be some real money put behind research'' on bird flu, Bruce Gale, an independent political risk analyst in Singapore, said in an interview today. ``Governments are going to be worried.''

A global pandemic, similar to the one in 1918 in which as many as 50 million people died, may kill more than 142 million people and cause the global economy to shrink by one-eighth, according to a report by the Lowy Institute and Australian National University released today.

    Hungarian Vaccine

Hungary, which found an H5 subtype of the virus in swans, said yesterday it will spend 4 billion forint ($19 million) to register and market a vaccine against the H5N1 virus in humans. Omninvest Kft., which is majority-owned by Cyprus-based Sumpter Pharmaceuticals Ltd., developed the vaccine with researchers at Hungary's national Epidemiology Center.

About 50 countries including the U.S. and Japan have been stockpiling antiviral drugs such as Roche Holding AG's Tamiflu and GlaxoSmithKline Plc's Relenza in the event of a pandemic.

The Netherlands needs another 2 million treatments of Tamiflu to be prepared for a possible outbreak among humans, Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported today. The country now has about 3 million ones in stock, according to the newspaper.

    Indonesian Deaths

Indonesia has the second-highest number of bird flu cases among humans in the world. A 15-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man admitted to an Indonesian hospital yesterday for suspected bird flu died earlier today, said Ilham Patu, a senior doctor at Sulianti Saroso, one Jakarta's two main hospitals treating avian flu cases.

If confirmed, the Indonesian fatalities will take to 11 the total number of fatal cases reported in February, the highest monthly tally since a record 14 deaths were confirmed in February 2004. The number of reported cases globally has climbed each month since August, as the virus spread further into Southeast Asia and to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

``It's now become a global problem,'' said Gale. ``It can no longer be seen as an `Asian' problem.''

Genetic studies of the virus circulating in Indonesia show it hasn't undergone any changes that have made it more contagious to people, said Sari Setiogi, a spokeswoman with the WHO in Jakarta. A total of 91 of the 169 people known to have been infected with the H5N1 strain since late 2003 have died, mainly in Southeast Asia, according to the WHO.

    Farming Restrictions

Governments in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Norway ordered poultry farmers to keep birds indoors to halt the spread of the disease.

In Italy, sales of poultry plunged 70 percent on concern about contracting bird flu after the lethal H5N1 strain of the virus was found in the country, said Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori. The industry is losing 6 million euros ($7.2 billion) a day, which brings total damages in recent months to 650 million euros, the Italian farmers association said in an e- mailed statement yesterday.

Authorities in Iraq, which confirmed a human case of H5N1 on Jan. 30, declared a bird-flu alert in Maysan province, south of Baghdad, to prevent people from transporting birds in and out of the area, Reuters said, citing an interview with Iraqi Health Minister Abdul Mutleb Mohammed Ali on Al Arabiya television.

Panic selling of infected birds has helped spread the H5N1 virus in Nigeria, where the first African bird flu outbreak was confirmed, Reuters reported, citing Lami Lombin, director of the country's veterinary lab.

In neighboring Niger, authorities are investigating dead chickens and ducks found in the border towns of Magaria and Zinder this week, Reuters said in a separate report, citing televised comments by government spokesman Mohamed Ben Omar.
