    Reden hiervoor? puur emotie.

Even geduld, sentiment slaat wel weer om.

    Groet, Ronald.

Canada finds bird flu case, plans further testing By Louise Egan and Marcy Nicholson
Fri Jun 16, 6:55 PM ET

OTTAWA/WINNIPEG (Reuters) - Canada has detected a case of H5 avian flu in the eastern province of Prince Edward Island and plans further testing over the weekend to determine whether it is the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, government officials announced on Friday.

A gosling in a small backyard poultry flock in the western end of the tiny province contracted the disease but there is a low risk of human illness from the outbreak, officials said.

The last Canadian outbreak occurred in November 2005 on the other side of the country, in British Columbia, and involved low-pathogenic H5N2 strain. In that case no birds actually showed signs of illness but 60,000 ducks and geese were culled nonetheless.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said there is no evidence that the latest bird flu case is the high-pathogen H5N1 strain that has spread to 48 countries so far since its resurgence in 2003.

If it is, it would be the first case in the Americas. The H5N1 strain has killed 129 people in nine countries since 2003, mostly in Asia.

"Just because the virus was there does not mean that's what killed the geese," said CFIA veterinarian Jim Clark.

"Ducks and geese are natural reservoirs for avian influenza viruses. The viruses exist quite nicely in their intestinal tract and cause absolutely no illness or death in the birds. That would be the situation in this case," he said.

A sample from the non-commercial flock of about 35 ducks, geese and chickens was brought to the Atlantic Veterinary College for testing after four goslings became sick on June 4, Clark said. The geese were not imported and there were no known links to Asia.

The CFIA has culled the entire backyard flock and is monitoring a 3 km (2 mile) zone around the property.

Prince Edward Island has only seven commercial chicken farms -- compared with over one thousand in top producer province Ontario -- and there are none within a 10 km (6 mile) radius of the affected farm, industry group Chicken Farmers of Canada said.

"We are alert but not alarmed, at this period in time," said Lisa Bishop-Spencer, a spokeswoman for the group. "We're going to wait for the results before we really react ... the fact that other birds appeared healthy is a very good sign in our eyes."

Not all H5 viruses are highly pathogenic and not all will cause severe disease in poultry.

Prince Edward Island's health officer, Dr. Lamont Sweet, told Reuters that the results of further bird flu tests were expected next week.

He downplayed any risk of transmission to humans but issued a warning nonetheless.

"People need to continue washing their hands carefully after handling poultry," Sweet said.

Canada, which has had numerous low pathogenic outbreaks, reported a case of H5N9 bird flu in 1966, which was highly pathogenic, and a case of high pathogenic H7N3 in 2004.

A chicken is caged in Jakarta in May 2006. A case of H5 bird flu virus has been detected in a Canadian poultry flock, and further testing will be done to determine whether it is the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, officials said.

A case of H5 bird flu virus has been detected in a Canadian poultry flock, and further testing will be done to determine whether it is the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, officials said.

The H5 virus, which is not highly pathogenic, was found on a goose from a small backyard poultry flock on the western end of Prince Edward Island, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said.

The agency said it would submit the sample to more sophisticated tests Saturday at its laboratories in Winnipeg.

Dr. Francois Caya of the ACIA said there were no immediate indications that the case of avian influenza virus was "highly pathogenic."

"But tests must be done to determine all that," he told AFP.

The virus was detected in a gosling in a flock of some 30 geese, chickens and ducks, which will be put to death this weekend, health officials said.

More than 120 people worldwide have died from the highly deadly H5N1 bird flu virus since it re-emerged as a threat in 2003, with most of the victims in Asia.

Health officials are paying particular attention this year to the European bird migration corridor, where the H5N1 virus has been detected in recent months.

To date no case of H5N1 has been detected in North American poultry stocks.

Expert: H5N1 Virus May Have Mutated

The latest human bird flu infection on the Chinese mainland is worrying as it shows the H5N1 virus may have mutated and become as infectious in warm months as in cooler ones, Hong Kong's health chief said on Friday.

The virus thrives in lower temperatures and is usually most infectious in the cooler months between October and March.

But confirmation on Thursday that a 31-year-old truck driver in the southern city of Shenzhen has been infected has caused uneasiness.

"Is this because the virus has changed, so that it is highly infectious all year round? Or, if it is happening in summer, winter would be even worse?" said the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, York Chow.

He said the virus might have become "more virulent and spread wider than we've expected," though its mutation was not confirmed.

"If that is the case, the risk for humans to be infected in the future is higher," he added.

The truck driver was admitted to hospital and was critically ill on Friday. He had visited a market where live poultry was sold and eaten chicken before he fell ill. But he is not known to have had any other close contact with poultry.

University of Hong Kong microbiology head Yuen Kwok-yung said the Shenzhen case was abnormal and worried the disease would spread in winter.

"If there are human infections from June to August, it means the virus is extremely active. I am worried that a major outbreak will happen in winter," he said.

In neighbouring Shenzhen, authorities have stepped up virus prevention and surveillance efforts.

The local government said it will now report the situation relating to human bird flu cases every day.

The Shenzhen Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has been asked to enhance its surveillance of any pneumonia-like cases.

So far the city has not reported any poultry infections.

But vendors said they are required to disinfect shelves twice a day and stop on-the-spot slaughtering. Some supermarkets have stopped selling live chickens.

"Business is really bad. I didn't even sell one chicken today," said a vendor at a Xiangmei Road market.
