    Gilead Sciences Appoints Andrew Dickinson as Chief Financial Officer
    FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2019-- Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD) today announced that Andrew Dickinson has been appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective November 1. Mr. Dickinson currently serves as the company’s Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and Strategy, and in his new role he will continue to be a member of the senior leadership team, reporting to Daniel O’Day, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

    Mr. Dickinson joined Gilead in 2016 and has transformed the way that the company approaches corporate development, expanding the kinds of transactions executed and implementing a broader and more strategic approach to deal-making. He served as the architect of the company’s 2017 acquisition of Kite Pharma, Inc. and of the 10-year, global research collaboration with Galapagos NV announced earlier this year. In his new role, Mr. Dickinson will retain responsibility for the corporate development and strategy organization.

    Prior to his tenure at Gilead, Mr. Dickinson worked for nine years at Lazard Frères & Co., where he was Global Co-Head of Healthcare Investment Banking. Prior to Lazard, he was General Counsel and Vice President of Corporate Development at Myogen, Inc., which was acquired by Gilead in 2006. Earlier in his career, he worked as a lawyer specializing in mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Dickinson received his B.A. in molecular, cellular and developmental biology at University of Colorado at Boulder and holds a J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago.

    Laat Gilead maar werken! Dat kunnen ze wel, verkopen.

    Dat vond ik ook nog interessant toen ik het artikel in de FD even teruglas, het feit dat tijdens de gesprekken binnen Gala over de deal ook besproken werd hoe ze het op de markt brengen van Filgotinib wereldwijd als een te grote opgave zagen. Dit in combinatie met de quote van Onno dat ze niet in dagen of weken moeten denken, maar in uren aangezien ze ieder uur anders miljoenen mislopen, sterkt mij in mijn overtuiging dat de deal met Gilead heel goed is. Binnen de EU kan Gala nu 10 jaar ervaring opdoen met het opzetten van een commercieel netwerk. Over 10 jaar kunnen ze dan wel weer zien hoe groot ze zijn geworden en of Gilead ze überhaupt nog wel kan overnemen, of dat ze dan gewoon zelfstandig de wereld in kunnen gaan trekken.

    Ik heb er heel, heel, heel veel zin in!

    En iedereen die nog een opmerking heeft over de warrant A voor Gilead heeft in mijn ogen een non-argument. We hebben allemaal prachtige kansen gehad om bij te kopen, tot wel 7 of 8 euro onder de prijs die Gilead voor die warrant A gaat betalen, dan had je dat kunnen doen, en niet achteraf gaan miepen over dat Gilead te weinig betaalt. Ik heb met 30% uitgebreid, en op die 30% sta ik nu al iets van 8% in de plus.

    Ik had al geen probleem met die warrants, en zou ik ook maar enige twijfel hebben gehad, dan heb ik nu ook rationeel geen enkel argument meer om het ooit anders te zien.

    Waar ik nog vuurwerk verwacht is het feit dat Gala ook al voor de deal zag dat ze aan 1-2mrd meer dan voldoende zouden hebben en nooit meer naar de markt zouden hoeven om geld op te halen. En dat een berg extra geld tegen onderzoek aangooien niet betekent dat er dan ook meer uitkomt.

    Ja, ze kunnen personeel verdubbelen waardoor het huidige onderzoek iets kan versnellen, ze kunnen sneller grotere studies opzetten waardoor medicijnen sneller naar de markt kunnen komen bij positieve resultaten, ze kunnen wat gebouwen bijbouwen, etc. Maar dan blijft er nog heel veel cash over, zeker met de mile stones erbij, en straks de inkomsten uit Filgotinib.

    Ik kan me niet anders voorstellen dan dat Onno nog wel een mooi plan heeft met bijvoorbeeld 1mrd. En dat hij daar nu al mooi een tijdje op aan het broeden is en daar e.e.a. voor in stelling aan het brengen is.

    We gaan mooie tijden tegemoet. Des te langer dat we met dat gepruts in de marge over de warrants bezig blijven, omdat de KT-beleggers hun overname zijn misgelopen, niet zijn uitgestapt op 170 of niet hebben bijgekocht rond de 130, des te langer blijft de markt afgeleid worden van het grotere plaatje, des te langer hebben belanghebbende middelen om onzekerheid en onrust te zaaien, etc.

    Wat zullen we allemaal vertederd terugkijken naar de discussies over deze nietige onderwerpen in augustus, september, oktober volgend jaar. Er gaat nog zoveel moois aankomen, deels zaken die we al enigszins verwachten, denken te kunnen voorspellen, maar ik denk ook echt nog een paar heel mooie verrassingen.

    De potentie van Gala zit nu iet alleen in de pijplijn, maar ook in de cash....

    Biopharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences Inc. selected an internal candidate to become its next finance chief, filling a key position on its leadership team as the company looks to further expand its portfolio beyond its core HIV treatments.

    The Foster City, Calif.-based company Tuesday said it appointed Andrew Dickinson as chief financial officer, effective Nov. 1. Mr. Dickinson, currently executive vice president for corporate development and strategy, joined Gilead in 2016 following a nine-year tenure in investment banking. He will succeed Robin Washington, who is set to retire from the CFO role but will remain in an advisory capacity until early next year. Ms. Washington’s planned retirement was announced in April.

    Chief Executive Daniel O’Day —who took the reins this year after a career at Roche Holding AG —in recent months made several key appointments at Gilead, including a new chief medical officer and a new head of its commercial division. “With the new CEO, CMO and CFO now in place, this effectively marks the end of a transition period for the company,” analysts at RBC Capital Markets LLC wrote in a note to clients.

    Gilead described Mr. Dickinson as the architect behind the company’s 2017 $11.9 billion acquisition of Kite Pharma Inc., a maker of cancer drugs, and its recent research and development collaboration with Belgium-based Galapagos NV, a company focusing on inflammation and immunology treatments.

    Mr. Dickinson “transformed the way that the company approaches corporate development, expanding the kinds of transactions executed and implementing a broader and more strategic approach to deal-making,” Gilead said in a statement.

    Analysts expect Gilead to pursue more deals once Mr. Dickinson has established himself as CFO. “They are putting together a team of people who would be very capable of doing that,” said Alethia Young, head of health-care research at Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm. “They are messaging that by putting this type of CFO in place.”

    Gilead declined to comment beyond details included in a press release.

    Gilead’s balance sheet—with $30.2 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable debt securities at the end of June—provides Mr. Dickinson with ample flexibility, analysts said.

    “They have the balance sheet to do multiple deals with early-stage companies,” said Mohit Bansal, a vice president for equity research at Citigroup Inc. Mr. Bansal said he expects the company to spend several billion dollars on transactions similar to the one with Galapagos.

    Gilead has various options, including a continued expansion into oncology treatments, cures for hepatitis B or inflammation and immunology drugs, said Salim Syed, head of biotechnology research at Mizuho Americas LLC, a corporate and investment bank. “They have a CFO now that has a history as a mergers-and-acquisitions banker,” Mr. Syed said. “Capital allocation becomes a really important question at this point.”

    Before his time at Gilead, Mr. Dickinson worked for nine years at Lazard Ltd. , where he was global co-head of health-care investment banking, and at Myogen Inc., a biopharmaceutical company that was acquired by Gilead in 2006.

    Gilead’s shares rose 1.2% Tuesday to $65.30.
