Raket aanval door Putin's leger op een flatgebouw in Dnipro

A woman was rescued from the rubble in Dnipro. Alive!

We watch these images and realize it could have been us. It could have been our loved ones. All of us, millions of Ukrainians, can die from bombs at any moment. We live with that knowledge

Gap in military strength between Ukraine and Russia gradually decreasing: infographics

Ukrainian analyst Volodymyr Dacenko shared on Twitter his analysis of the current balance of military power between Ukraine and Russia, presenting the comparison of the two armies as of late 2022 as infographics.

For the analysis, he used open data from the Military Balance, Oryx, National Defense, mil.gov.ua, defence-ua.com.

    euromaidanpress.com/2023/01/13/gap-in...

In general, the gap between Ukraine and Russia in military power is gradually decreasing. This happens both because Russia has heavy losses and because Ukraine maintains or even strengthens its power due to the help of allies and war trophies.

Ukraine, on the contrary, now uses much more armored vehicles in the attack. The lack of a sufficient number of tanks forces the use of lighter equipment, but it is much more effective than an attack with only infantry forces.

Russia can probably afford to mobilize up to a million more soldiers. And it will allow to fight long enough. But the key issue is artillery. How much is it enough for?

I made some assumptions about the artillery earlier. Considering the tens of millions of old Soviet shells, I don’t think that the RU artillery machine will run out anytime soon.
But the RU are running out of more scarce long-range shells for a distance of more than 20 km

Probably now Ukraine dominates at distances of 20-80 km. But supplies of 155mm shells and GMLRS are limited. And Ukraine needs longer-range capabilities to destroy the Russians’ logistics.

Cutting off logistical routes and depleting supplies is the main premise of Ukraine’s counteroffensive. Therefore, it is important for Ukraine to get more long-range systems and shells.

Poetin positief over voortgang 'militaire operatie' in Oekraïne

    -------------

What countries have given the most heavy weapons to Ukraine?

NATO countries have transferred 1.4-3.6% of their heavy weapons systems to Ukraine. The US has given the most, but its stocks are the largest, too. Czech Republic is Ukraine’s most loyal ally in terms of proportion of items given. While initially hesitating, Germany’s role is greater and greater. But some well-armed NATO countries are not in a hurry to supply anything.

How many Western countries have weapons and how many of these weapons were transferred to Ukraine during the eight months of the war against Russia?

NATO transferred 1.4-3.6% of its heavy weapons systems to Ukraine. The highest percentage is for artillery – about 3.6%.

The need for artillery remains the most acute because Ukraine has minimal stocks of shells for Soviet artillery systems of 122/152mm caliber.

The transition to NATO artillery began in April. And in half a year, Ukraine received about 400 artillery systems of 105/155mm caliber.

The US transferred the most systems – about 200 units. But this country also has the largest reserves of artillery among NATO countries.

The total number of artillery in the US arsenal and stores:

    1,523 self-propelled guns
    2,151 howitzers
    800 HIMARS, M270, and ATACMS.

The Czech Republic and Great Britain became the most generous suppliers of artillery. The Czech Republic transferred about 40% of all its artillery systems to Ukraine. Great Britain – 25%.

How Ukraine became a laboratory for Western weapons and battlefield innovation

Last fall, as Ukraine won back large swaths of territory in a series of counterattacks, it pounded Russian forces with American-made artillery and rockets. Guiding some of that artillery was a homemade targeting system that Ukraine developed on the battlefield.

A piece of Ukrainian-made software has turned readily available tablet computers and smartphones into sophisticated targeting tools that are now used widely across the Ukrainian military.

The result is a mobile app that feeds satellite and other intelligence imagery into a real-time targeting algorithm that helps units near the front direct fire onto specific targets. And because it’s an app, not a piece of hardware, it’s easy to quickly update and upgrade, and available to a wide range of personnel.

US officials familiar with the tool say it has been highly effective at directing Ukrainian artillery fire onto Russian targets.

The targeting app is among dozens of examples of battlefield innovations that Ukraine has come up with over nearly a year of war, often finding cheap fixes to expensive problems.

Small, plastic drones, buzzing quietly overhead, drop grenades and other ordinance on Russian troops. 3D printers now make spare parts so soldiers can repair heavy equipment in the field. Technicians have converted ordinary pickup trucks into mobile missile launchers. Engineers have figured out how to strap sophisticated US missiles onto older Soviet fighter jets such as the MiG-29, helping keep the Ukrainian air force flying after nine months of war.

Ukraine has even developed its own anti-ship weapon, the Neptune, based off Soviet rocket designs that can target the Russian fleet from almost 200 miles away.

This kind of Ukrainian ingenuity has impressed US officials, who have praised Kyiv’s ability to “MacGyver” solutions to its battlefield needs that fill in important tactical gaps left by the larger, more sophisticated Western weaponry.

While US and other Western officials don’t always have perfect insight into exactly how Ukraine’s custom-made systems work – in large part because they are not on the ground – both officials and open-source analysts say Ukraine has become a veritable battle lab for cheap but effective solutions.

“Their innovation is just incredibly impressive,” said Seth Jones, director of the international security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
