    AI and self-driving cars

    Nissan plans to launch a system it calls Seamless Autonomous Mobility. It's a workaround solution for what to do when the first generation of true autonomous cars encounter situations they may not be able to handle.

    Its autonomous cars would be linked to a command center. If it encounters an issue -- say, a roadblock where police are using hand signals to reroute cars over double yellow lines -- the car pulls over and signals to the command center that it needs help.

    An actual human (called a mobility manager) in that center will look at vehicle images and sensor data to determine how to handle it, and it will be under the manager's control until the manager leaves it to its own devices, pun intended.

    Weinig verheffends op de presentaties vond ik, of ik moet wat gemist hebben.

    Nissan wil de eerste zijn, zeggen dat autonoom rijden er sneller is dan je denkt en noemt dan net als alle andere partijen 2020

    Samenvatting van de Nissan presentatie. Nissan wil dus medewerkers gebruiken om onvoorziene omstandigheden op de weg handmatig te kunnen oplossen. Dit doen zij met behulp van NASA technologie en het heeft de naam SAM (Seamless Autonomous Mobility).

    Overigens viel er tijdens de presentatie 1 keer het woord HD-Maps. Alleen jammer genoeg niet welke leverancier zij hiervoor hebben.

    New TomTom GO and TomTom VIA GPS Devices Launch

    LAS VEGAS, NV., January 5, 2017 – TomTom (TOM2) today announced the U.S. launch of new TomTom navigation products for the car, under the TomTom GO and TomTom VIA lines. These advanced GPS devices boast TomTom’s latest innovations and the most up-to-date maps.

    The advanced TomTom GO devices are available in two models, GO 520 and GO 620, in 5” and 6” capacitive touchscreens, respectively. They include a new Wi-Fi® capability feature and integrate seamlessly with smartphones. TomTom GO devices can read text messages aloud, enable full use of smartphone personal assistants, and allow hands-free calling, to keep drivers’ eyes on the road. Wi-Fi® makes it extremely simple to update Lifetime World Maps[1] or software with no computer connectivity required.

    The devices are able to learn drivers’ habits and can predict destinations; the devices become familiar with regularly driven commutes, automatically alert drivers to any traffic and provide alternate routes.

    The slim and stylish TomTom VIA GPS devices are available in three models, VIA 1425, VIA 1525 and VIA 1625, available in 4”, 5” and 6” touchscreens, respectively. They offer an enhanced address search that helps drivers define destinations from the search menu or by touching a point on the map.

    TomTom VIA devices also offer Advanced Lane Guidance, helping drivers prepare for exits and intersections by clearly highlighting the correct driving lane for a planned route. Drivers also have the ability to update maps for the device’s lifetime at no extra charge with Lifetime Maps[1].

    Gaat over Mitsubishi:

    Lijkt enigszins op RoadDNA, maar het is een beetje vage tekst. Het is niet helemaal duidelijk of ze er hetzelfde mee beogen, en of het qua laterale positionering al al even ver dichtgetimmerd (en gepatenteerd) is. Radar wordt iig niet gebruikt.
    Op de site van Mitsubishi zelf is er niets over te vinden.

    Op dit gebied wordt overigens door vele partijen geëxperimenteerd. Mobileye natuurlijk (via triangulatie met land en road marks), HERE (RoadDNA-achtig maar details zijn mij niet helemaal duidelijk, TT ligt denk ik voor), en anderen.

    Indirect is ook het Zweedse Autoliv bezig, i.s.m. Volvo:

    Dat gaat over beveiliging bij botsingen van opzij, maar vereist (dus) ook accurate en snelle laterale afstandsschatting.
    Er zijn dus kapers op de kust, maar dat was te verwachten. Ik blijf het positief vinden dat TT (geen auto- of sensorbouwer zijnde) er al eerder als de kippen bij was.

    De rol van de onafhankelijke leverancier van Microsoft richting de autmobielfabrikanten wordt benadrukt (we gaan geen eigen auto's bouwen).
    Dat past perfect bij TT.

    Het belang van het partnership van TT met Microsoft Azure wordt steeds groter.

    Het mooiste TT Azure nieuws was dus van voor de CES en sindsdien is de koers stijgende (vanaf 7,70) en vertrekken shorters. Zouden partijen al meer weten?

    En nu maar hopen dat Microsoft een bod doet op TT en na de negatieve ervaringen met Nokia, Here uiteindelijk links zal laten liggen. Of een Nasdaq beursgang van TTInside, dat is ook goed Harold. We gaan het meemaken in 2017, de koopkracht is terug, ook zonder echt TT Ces nieuws.

    Nissan also announced it will soon release an update of the Leaf that will be equipped with the semiautonomous ProPilot system, which was first mounted on its Serena minivan in 2016.

    Laten we eerst even een paar maanden gestaag omhoog gaan! en dan tot de conclusie komen dat tomtom overal dik inzit. En dat er dan een grote jongen een overname plant!!

    Autonomous tech supplier Mobileye wants automakers to crowdsource maps for self-driving cars

    Mobileye, a company that supplies camera technology for self-driving vehicles to more than 25 automakers, is trying to get some of those traditional carmakers to do what few are ever willing to: Share.

    Specifically, the company — which announced its camera and sensor technology would appear in both BMW and Audi self-driving vehicles between 2020 and 2021 at CES 2017 — wants to get automakers to crowdsource and aggregate their high definition mapping data.

    High definition maps are a crucial aspect of any autonomous system — put simply, the software needs to know where it’s going to be able to drive itself. It’s a new area of mapping that requires three-dimensional imaging that goes beyond what Google has done.

    It can take a great deal of time and money to map just a single city, much less the world. Crowdsourcing and aggregating every automakers’ mapping data would make a significant dent in the time and resources companies are spending on charting the world’s streets, according to Mobileye co-founder and CTO Amnon Shashua.

    The problem is, auto companies have long been reluctant to hand over their data to competitors for fear of relinquishing any competitive advantage. That’s increasingly becoming the case as more players join the race to build and deploy self-driving cars.

    But autonomous systems work better when systems are standardized and not differentiated, Mobileye’s chief of communications Dan Galvez argued. That would also make it easier to regulate and manage self-driving cars.

    For automakers, when it comes to competing, it will likely be more important to differentiate how the companies deploy the self-driving cars. So sharing information that assists in merely developing that autonomous system shouldn’t be a competitive disadvantage, he said.

    Beyond that, Mobileye’s overall pitch to those companies is simple. Many of these automakers are already building or developing vehicles with at least a front-facing camera. Mobileye would merely be taking the cost the companies already allocated to integrating that camera and adding more value to it, according to Galvez.

    Access to this global mapping information would mean an automaker wouldn’t be limited to rolling out its self-driving cars only in regions in which it has a large footprint.

    It’s also more cost effective. BMW, for example, wouldn’t have to deploy mapping vehicles in every city all over the world in order to be able to deploy self-driving cars globally.

    That said, it doesn’t have to necessarily be Mobileye that controls all that mapping information. However, according to Galvez, no other company has the scale that Mobileye has.

    “We’ve also always been a great partner to the industry. They know they can trust that we won’t try to [exert] too much control,” he said.

    BMW, Nissan, Audi and others have expressed interest but haven’t signed any agreement. For one, there are still concerns about what would happen to that data if another company buys Mobileye, or how it might be sold.

    For partnerships to bring this self-driving technology to production, Huang announced that Nvidia would be working with two digital mapmakers, Here and Zenrin. Here is a consortium owned by BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, while Zenrin builds digital maps of Japanese cities. Nvidia previously signed deals with Chinese mapmaker Baidu and TomTom.
