    Spijtig dat de prijsdiscussie bestempeld blijft als 'duurste medicijn'. Als je kijkt wat huidige medicatie kost - wat jaarlijks meerdere malen gekocht en toegediend wordt - dan hebben we het gauw over ruim twintig miljoen per patiënt. In contrast, het voorstel van BioMarin is niet duur maar een koopje. Hier valt op het gebied van publieksvoorlichting een wereld te winnen!

    Begin van dit jaar kreeg Jelle van Tilburg (34) uit Bergen op Zoom te horen dat hij een kwaadaardige hersentumor had. In het Erasmus MC werd hij geopereerd door neurochirurg dr. Arnaud Vincent. Het werd een wakkere hersenoperatie. Tijdens de ingreep speelde Jelle ‘Wish you were here’ op zijn gitaar. Ook voor de neurochirurg was dit de eerste keer.
    Op dit moment is hersenkanker één van de moeilijkst te behandelen vormen van kanker. En juist deze vorm van kanker komt relatief vaak voor bij jonge mensen. “Voor mij als muzikant en instrumentenbouwer was het belangrijk dat mijn fijne motoriek en creativiteit intact bleven. En ik wilde graag dat de operatie en het gitaar spelen werden gefilmd. Zodat de buitenwereld kan zien dat dit mogelijk is.”
    “Het liefst wil ik dat miljoenen mensen dit filmpje gaan zien en onderzoek naar hersentumoren gaan ondersteunen.”

    Baanbrekend onderzoek naar betere hersenoperatie-techniek
    De hersenoperatie is een zeer belangrijk deel van de behandeling van kwaadaardige  hersentumoren. Hoe meer tumorweefsel verwijderd kan worden, hoe beter voor de patiënt. Het lukt helaas niet altijd om de gehele tumor er uit te halen omdat hersentumoren vaak vlakbij belangrijke hersenfuncties liggen.
    Het onderzoek van dr. Vincent betreft een belangrijke verbetering van de hersenoperatie-techniek. Vincent: “We gebruiken hier een totaal nieuwe techniek die o.a. in het Erasmus MC is ontwikkeld. Het betreft de z.g. Functional Ultrasoound (fUS) techniek. Hiermee kunnen we én de hersenfuncties beter in beeld brengen én het tumorweefsel beter onderscheiden van het normale hersenweefsel. Dit onderzoek zou een enorme  vooruitgang kunnen betekenen voor de prognose maar ook de kwaliteit van leven van hersentumor patiënten.
