TomTom yesterday announced the launch of the TomTom GO series of portable navigation devices (PNDs) in Africa. For the first time, road users will have access to a highly accurate, interactive map of all countries in the continent, empowering drivers with the information they need to make better informed, daily driving decisions.

The TomTom GO series provides turn-by-turn directions, road signage information and intersections across seven million kilometres of Africa’s road infrastructure. The PNDs also include Lifetime TomTom Traffic (available in South Africa only), which utilises TomTom’s world-class traffic information to pinpoint exactly where delays start and end, helping drivers reach their destinations faster.
In addition, the TomTom GO series provides easy access to the travel information they need via a high-resolution, capacitive touch screen. An Interactive Map responds and scales to touch, so drivers can simply zoom in and out to find places on the map with their fingertips, or tap on the map to get an instant route to a destination.
“We are pleased to introduce the very first personal navigation devices that span all countries within the African continent,” said Daan Henderickx, Country Manager of TomTom. “Now, no matter where you are in Africa, TomTom is there to help make your journey as straightforward as possible, every day.”
Maps updates are incorporated via TomTom’s MapShare service, which enables users to report road changes directly to TomTom, of which over 3000 are reported every month. In addition, the TomTom map carries both old and new street names, for roads that have changed over time, making it easier for people to locate their exact destination by name.
