    Why Tortoise Acquisition Stock Is Rising Today

    What happened
    Shares of Tortoise Acquisition (NYSE: SHLL) were moving higher on Monday. The special purpose acquisition company released second-quarter financial information for electric-truck powertrain maker Hyliion, the company it plans to merge with later this year, in a regulatory filing after the market closed on Friday.

    As of 11:30 a.m. EDT, Tortoise's shares were up about 10.1% from Friday's closing price.

    So what
    In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Friday afternoon, Tortoise released key numbers from Hyliion's first-half financial results, which we can use (together with an earlier filing that included first-quarter financial information) to understand how Hyliion performed in the second quarter.

    Hyliion had no significant revenue in the first half of 2020, as it hadn't yet shipped products. (The company has since installed about 20 of its hybrid heavy-truck powertrains in trucks belonging to its initial customers, Tortoise disclosed in Friday's filing.) Here's how the other key numbers compare with Hyliion's first-quarter results.

    The filings in question were preliminary versions of the proxy statement for the merger. That's the document that will be sent to existing shareholders of Tortoise, asking them to approve the plan to merge with Hyliion and the members of the merged company's board of directors.

    What's it mean? Not much, although we can see that Hyliion burned about $2.7 million in the second quarter. (The merged company will have an additional $560 million in cash, so no need to worry about that burn rate.)

    But it's another proof point for auto investors: Hyliion is a real company with a real product -- one that has now begun to ship.

    Now what
    We still don't know exactly when Tortoise's shareholders will vote on the merger proposal, though it seems likely to happen next month. Tortoise CEO Vince Cubbage told me in June that the parties expected to seal the deal by the end of September, and the proxy statement notes that Hyliion has the right to take on additional debt without Tortoise's consent if the deal doesn't close by Sept. 16.

    As of right now, there aren't any known obstacles to the deal. I expect it will happen roughly on schedule -- that is to say, by about Sept. 15. I also expect that investor interest in the stock will rise once the combined companies begin trading as "Hyliion" following the merger.

    RWE Joins New European Clean Hydrogen Alliance

    RWE supports the newly launched European Clean Hydrogen Alliance ECH2A. The organisation has ambitious aims on the deployment of hydrogen technologies by 2030; bringing together renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, demand in industry, mobility and other sectors, as well as hydrogen transmission and distribution. These objectives fit perfectly with RWE's view of hydrogen as one of the great hopes for the decarbonisation of industry. For this reason, the company will be involved in the alliance, which was established by the EU Commission. The company announced to have joined the alliance.

    RWE is convinced of the role hydrogen can have in the energy transition. RWE also sees opportunities for the use of hydrogen within its operations, largely due to its large portfolio of renewable generation globally which is key in the production of hydrogen. In addition the company has both the experience and the knowledge to produce H2 as well as the capability to store H2 in gas storage, which belongs to the company.

    With the alliance, the EU wants to build its global leadership in hydrogen to support the EU’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

    Energiebedrijf RWE geeft aandelen uit

    ESSEN (AFN) - Het Duitse energiebedrijf RWE gaat zijn aandelenkapitaal met 10 procent vergroten. De aandelen worden uitgegeven aan institutionele beleggers via een versnelde procedure. De beurswaarde van RWE is momenteel 21,1 miljard euro waardoor de uitgifte ruim 2 miljard euro kan opbrengen.

    RWE wil de opbrengst gebruiken om te investeren in een vergroting van de capaciteit op de korte termijn. Ook moet de pijplijn van projecten voor hernieuwbare energie op de middellange en lange termijn worden uitgebreid. Die groei moet boven op de al aangekondigde groeiambitie van meer dan 13 Gigawatt aan hernieuwbare energie en 5 miljard euro aan investeringen tegen eind 2022 komen.

    Ook gaat een deel van de opbrengst naar de aankoop van projecten van Nordex. Die deal was eind juli al aangekondigd.

    Siemens Energy Launches Green Hydrogen Production Project in China

    Siemens Energy and Beijing Green Hydrogen Technology Development Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China Power International Development Ltd, signed an agreement on providing a hydrogen production system for a hydrogen fueling station. Located in Yanqing District, Beijing, one of the three main competition areas for a major sporting event in 2022, the green hydrogen production solution provided by Siemens Energy will help guarantee the hydrogen supply for the public transportation during and after the event. The megawatt green hydrogen production solution is the first of its kind to be built by Siemens Energy in China. The project is expected to be delivered in May 2021.

    In September 2019, Siemens signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in green hydrogen development and comprehensive utilization with State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC), which is the ultimate controlling shareholder of China Power. The hydrogen production project is the result of a close partnership between the two companies. The two sides also plan to further expand their cooperation on green hydrogen projects.

    Electrolyzers use electricity to split water into its components oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen produced only in this way is called green if the electricity used comes exclusively from a renewable source, i.e. from wind farms, solar plants, hydro or geothermal power plants. As the core equipment of the hydrogen integrated energy station, Siemens Energy’s PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer system Silyzer 200 can produce high-quality hydrogen at industrial scale. In addition, the hydrogen production system responds quickly, the start-up time under pressure is less than one minute, and it can be directly coupled with renewable energy. In order to meet customer needs of saving space and being flexible, Siemens Energy has adapted its hydrogen production system into a customized solution, which is also its first skid-mounted megawatt green hydrogen production system in China.

    The South Korean government will invest a total of 586.6 billion won to support the development of the country’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industries, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Chung Seung-il said during the 2020 Energy Strategy Forum, which was attended by representatives from the US, China, Japan, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK on August 19.

    Nederland dreigt achterop te raken met groene waterstof

    Nederland ziet zichzelf graag als de toekomstige “waterstofrotonde” van Noordwest-Europa. Maar ons land dreigt te worden ingehaald door landen als Duitsland, Frankrijk en Spanje, zeggen diverse betrokkenen. Die landen stellen meer geld beschikbaar voor hun waterstofambities dan Nederland. “Duitsland maakt echte keuzes. Wij willen het vooral goedkoop houden.”

    In welk opzicht vind je het een moeilijke markt, vergeleken met andere markten?

    Voordat er allemaal namen de revue passeren waarbij iedereen zijn of haar favorieten heeft, zou ik eerst kijken in welk deel van de markt je wilt investeren. De voorkant van de keten bestaat uit productie, opslag en distributie. De achterkant van de keten betreft het gebruik van waterstof waarbij je een onderscheid kunt maken tussen bijvoorbeeld industrie, transport, logistiek, bouw etc.
