How long before a G7 central bank raises rates?Economic view: George Buckley

Hardly a day goes by without mention of the phrase “exit strategies”, which is the jargon that economists use for central banks raising interest rates from their current exceptionally low levels (and, where applicable, unwinding their policies of so-called quantitative easing).

European bourses seen up a bit

    EUROPEAN OUTLOOK & US/ASIAN SUMMARIES:

Global stock markets are mostly higher as investors play encouraging economic data over Friday's Wall Street decline. European stock markets are likely to edge higher, with government bonds lower. The euro is higher, with spot gold up and oil futures lower.

    STOCKS:

European stock markets are likely to open slightly higher Monday, tracking Wall Street futures, after markets wilted Friday with investor enthusiasm waning ahead of corporate earnings reports this week and as software giant Microsoft reported a profit fall.
For Monday's opening, City Index is calling the FTSE up around 7 points and the DAX up around 10.
"Despite Friday's triple digit losses on the Dow, European markets are looking at a relatively flat to slightly higher start to trade," according to Ben Potter, analysts at IG Markets. "Those shocking GDP figures out of the UK last week may yet end up taking their toll on London equities, not least as sterling continues to fall, although optimists may continue to buy into the belief that growth will have resumed by the year end."
Microsoft reported that net profit fell 18% in the first quarter of its fiscal year, a result that nonetheless surpassed market expectations.
"With stocks already near 2009 highs, traders are contemplating how much current stock valuations already reflect the better prospects for corporate earnings," analysts at Charles Schwab & Co. said in a note to clients.
But they added that "while earnings levels were universally better than projected, revenue levels have been more mixed, which has been another key issue for traders this earnings season."
Briefing.com's Patrick O'Hare said the market was carefully tracking the earnings of key companies even though they were generally better than expected and surprised on the upside.
"The list of positive surprises goes on and on, not just today, but for the entire week," he said.
"We don't know if that means analysts have been simply woefully bad with their estimates or whether it reveals how mismanaged companies were if they still have so much room to cut expenses."
Others pointed out that investors may be looking to lock in gains after the stunning rally that has the main indexes near their highs for 2009.
Investors in Europe were likewise reluctant to commit themselves ahead of next week's earnings reports.
"The market trend (in Paris) has stalled after an exceptional rally" and in anticipation of "major European (corporate) results," said Xavier de Villepion of Global Equities.
U.S. stock futures are higher Monday, after markets closed lower Friday as a weak forecast out of railroad operator Burlington Northern fueled worries about freight demand, a barometer of the wider economy, although technology giants Microsoft and Amazon.com escaped the declines thanks to exceptionally strong quarterly earnings.
Neil Menard, principal at Steben & Co., said while he believes much of Friday's declines were "just a function of profit taking," he also said too many of the earnings beats still seem to be coming from cost cuts. "If that continues, I just don't know how well that's going to bode for the stocks themselves," he said. Investors came into the reporting season hungry for companies to start showing revenue growth.
"The technical signs for us are pointing to a pullback," Menard added, noting that retail investors are still concerned about their jobs, while institutional investors remain worried about whether the U.S. could slip back into recession.
Third-quarter earnings season continues this week with four components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and more than a quarter of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index companies reporting.
The advance figure for third-quarter domestic gross product, out Thursday, is expected to show 3.1% growth, the first positive figure since the second quarter of 2008.
And a congressional committee is scheduled to consider a package of measures involving investor rules this week.
Asian shares are mostly higher Monday despite Wall Street's fall Friday, with South Korean shares helped by upbeat GDP data and coal miner Felix Resources gaining in Sydney on hopes its takeover by Yanzhou Coal Mining would go through.
Australia's market was the worst performer so far, with some materials stocks falling.
    under more pressure Monday.
While some believe that the pound could see some relief from general dollar weakness, the magnitude of Friday's selloff and the shock to economic expectations could just as likely lead to further decline.
