   BTW. vandaag mijn seizoensgriepprik gaan halen.
   Voor de mexikaanse prik is het nog te vroeg maar de huisarts zei me dat het een hele opgaaf gaat zijn om iedereen die wil, de prik gratis te bezorgen.
   
   Stel: kleine gemeente 9000 inwoners dat 5000 inwoners de prik willen. Vaccin wordt in flacons aangeleverd, betekent dus direct 5000 lege spuitjes bestellen want die worden niet meegeleverd met de flacons. Zou moeten 3x herhaald worden. Ondoenbaar in korte tijd, zegt hij.
   
   (Ik denk dat hij het over het GSK-vaccin heeft, gemaakt in Waals België).
   
   Gisteren ook een rel in Mechelen op een infoavond. De door de fabrikant van het griepvaccin gestuurde doctor sprak enkel frans (en engels) en kon niet antwoorden op in het nederlands gestelde vragen. Nu ja geneesheren kennen wel meerdere talen... maar communaitair is het een rel.

   Baxter Receives EMEA Positive Opinion for CELVAPAN H1N1 Pandemic Influenza Vaccine
   
   Baxter International Inc. (NYSE:BAX) today announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) granted its "positive opinion” for CELVAPAN H1N1 pandemic vaccine using Baxter’s Vero cell technology.
   
   This positive opinion confirms the acceptability of Baxter’s regulatory submission to obtain final marketing authorization and licensure of the product.
   
   CELVAPAN H1N1 is the first cell culture-based and non-adjuvanted vaccine to receive a positive opinion in the European Union.
   
   Initial quantities of vaccine have already been delivered to a number of countries, including the UK and Ireland, for use in their national vaccination programs, and are awaiting product release subject to final marketing authorization being granted by the European Commission.

   Sanofi Says Swine-Flu Vaccine Produces 'Robust' Response >SNY

   The vaccines unit of French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY) unit said the company's U.S.-licensed swine-flu vaccine produced a "robust" immune response on adult test subjects, even those aged over 65.
   
   Sanofi Pasteur said a single 15-microgram dose provided antibody response three weeks after vaccination that is considered "protective."
   
   The data, from a study of 849 adults, confirm preliminary data from another study by the National Institutes of Health, Sanofi Pasteur said.
   
   The company began U.S. clinical trials in early August, including adults 18 to 64, adults 65 and older, and children 6 months to 9 years old. The ultimate findings will be used to determine the recommended dosages and schedule for the vaccine, which was licensed by the U.S.
   
   Food and Drug Administration on Sept. 15. Although Sanofi-Aventis delivered its first shipment of swine-flu vaccine to the U.S. government Tuesday, ahead of schedule, the company cautioned then that the shots may not become immediately available for administration because they will have to work their way through government distribution channels.
   
   Last week, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the first doses of an H1N1 vaccine should become available by about Oct. 6.
   
   Sanofi has contracted with the U.S. government to supply a total of 75.3 million doses of its H1N1 vaccine, manufactured at a plant in Swiftwater, Pa. Other manufacturers also have supply contracts with the U.S., including GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK) and AstraZeneca PLC (AZN). AstraZeneca's MedImmune unit began moving its H1N1 vaccine from its distribution center to U.S. regional distribution centers a week ago. Novartis AG (NVS) began shipping its H1N1 vaccine for distribution in the U.S. on Sunday.
   
   Drug distributor McKesson Corp. (MCK) is handling the distribution of the vaccines under a contract with the U.S. government.
   
   The swine flu, or H1N1 influenza virus, began spreading rapidly earlier this year, and as of last week there had been more than 300,000 laboratory-confirmed cases and 3,917 deaths in 191 countries and territories, according to the World Health Organization.
   
   WHO has declared it a pandemic, and vaccine makers and health officials have been working quickly to make vaccines against the virus available to as many people as possible.
   
   In recent trading, Sanofi's American depositary shares were down 65 cents, or 1.8%, to $36.30 as part of a broad market decline. The shares are up 7.5% over the past year.

   vr 02/10/2009 - 10:50 In Harvard zijn de jaarlijkse Ig Nobelprijzen toegekend. Die bekronen jaarlijks bizar wetenschappelijk onderzoek en dito uitvindingen. Dit jaar viel een bh in de prijzen die desgevallend ook als gasmasker gebruikt kan worden.
   
   Het is al de negende keer dat de Ig Nobelprijzen worden uitgedeeld en ook dit jaar zijn er opmerkelijke zaken bekroond.
   
   Zoals de prijs voor gezondheid, die toekomt aan de Amerikaanse Elena Bodnar, die een bh ontwikkeld heeft die in noodsituaties over de mond getrokken kan worden als een gasmasker. De andere helft kan zelfs gebruikt worden om omstaanders te beschermen.

   Positief advies derde vaccin Mexicaanse griep

   BRUSSEL (ANP) - Het Europese medicijnenagentschap heeft de Europese Commissie geadviseerd een derde vaccin tegen de Mexicaanse griep goed te keuren. Dat heeft het agentschap vrijdag bekendgemaakt. Het gaat om het vaccin Celvapan van het bedrijf Baxter.
   
   Afgelopen dinsdag gaf de Europese Commissie toestemming voor het gebruik van de vaccins Focetria van Novartis en Pandemrix van GlaxoSmithKline. De verwachting is dat de commissie nu ook snel haar goedkeuring zal geven aan het derde vaccin.

   LONDON - The H1N1 swine flu pandemic should spur pharmaceutical researchers to renew efforts to develop a universal flu vaccine and rethink ways of dealing with future pandemics, scientists said on Friday.
   Flu experts from the World Health Organization, Swiss drug giant Novartis AG, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and others noted that the arrival of H1N1 had prompted a jump in the potential output of vaccine manufacturing to 900 million doses from 400 million.
   But in a letter to the journal Science, they urged drug and health industries to be more proactive in developing and distributing vaccines — and in particular to speed up the search for a universal flu vaccine.
   "Although the H1N1 pandemic has the potential to cause a social and economic emergency, it also provides an opportunity to rethink our approach to influenza virus disease and to develop more effective vaccines and economically sustainable solutions for developing and developed countries," they wrote. "Research toward development of a universal vaccine should be accelerated."
   A universal flu vaccine which would combat all strains of the virus has so far eluded pharmaceutical firms and scientists.
   Inovio Biomedical Corp, which is working on such a vaccine, said this week that it expects initial evidence early next year on whether the technology it is using can help to fight diseases.
   Johnson & Johnson, the world's biggest diversified health care company, recently bought a stake in Dutch biotech firm Crucell partly to get hold of flu-mAb, a universal antibody engineered to prevent and treat infections from various influenza A strains.
   The swine flu outbreak was declared a pandemic in June and has already infected millions of people around the world. Drugmakers and governments have been scrambling to make and supply vaccines targeting the new H1N1 strain before a feared second wave of infection hits as the northern hemisphere heads into winter.
   The flu experts, including Dr David Salisbury, director of immunization at Britain's Department of Health, and Dr John Treanor, who tests flu vaccines at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, criticized the current approach to flu as "reactive rather than anticipatory."
   "We have already learned a great deal about fighting influenza, but we need to move from a reactive to a proactive and sustainable stance," they wrote.
   They said better flu surveillance methods were needed in developing countries to understand how such viruses circulate globally and affect morbidity and mortality.
   They also proposed strengthening epidemiological studies in developing countries to try to fill "knowledge gaps" about the virus, including the role of antibodies, immune memory, and T-cells that recognize and destroy viruses.

Although the present manufacturing capacity is unlikely to have all the vaccines needed before the peak of the next wave of cases, the potential output of vaccine manufacturing has increased from 400 to 900 million (1). A vaccine will be produced in Europe with modern cell culture technology instead of eggs. A large facility for cell culture production under construction in the United States is expected to improve the current limited production capacity. Although vaccines against avian H5N1 are not highly immunogenic, this shortcoming can be overcome by using adjuvants or reverting to using whole-virus vaccines (2–5).

   -- Inovio Biomedical Corporation (INO), a leader in DNA vaccine design, development and delivery, announced today that a combination of its synthetic consensus (SynCon(TM)) H1N1 influenza vaccine candidates achieved protective antibody responses against the novel pandemic influenza A/H1N1 (2009) in 100% of tested ferrets. The ferret model is widely considered to be the most representative of human influenza; achieving in ferrets a level of antibody titers commonly associated with protection in humans is a critical milestone in influenza vaccine development. Dr. Niranjan Y. Sardesai, Inovio's Sr. VP, Research and Development, presented this data at the Vaccine 3rd Global Congress in Singapore in a presentation entitled, "Development of Universal SynCon(TM) DNA Vaccines for Pandemic and Seasonal Flu." Following promising results in mice and pigs with SynCon(TM) H1N1 DNA vaccine candidates, as referenced in previous news releases, in this study Inovio scientists immunized ferrets with a formulation of H1N1 DNA vaccine candidates. They then tested the ferrets' serum for hemagglutination inhibition (HI) responses against one of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 strains, A/H1N1/Mexico/InDRE4487/2009.
   
   HI measurements from the blood of vaccinated animals are used to assess the generation of protective antibody responses. Generating an antibody titer of 1:20 is generally regarded as a positive vaccine response, with a titer of 1:40 or higher in the blood of vaccinated subjects generally associated with protection against influenza in humans. In this experiment, a single vaccination showed induction of positive immune responses in 78% (7 of 9) of ferrets, with a mean HI titer of 1:42. After two booster shots, 100% of immunized ferrets had HI titers greater than 1:40, with the mean titer rising to 1:390.
   
   Dr. Sardesai stated in his presentation, "Achieving positive data from the important ferret model is a vital addition to the positive mice and swine data we already reported for our H1N1 SynCon(TM) DNA vaccine candidates. Together with our previously published H5N1 avian flu virus data, which highlighted the vaccine's cross-reactivity and broad immunogenicity across unmatched strains and included protection data in mice, ferrets, and non-human primates, these new H1N1 results further demonstrate the potential to protect against new strains of influenza that do not specifically match the vaccine -- unlike conventional vaccines, which are strain-specific and usually provide limited protection against emerging, divergent strains of influenza."

   The CDC announced today that healthcare workers in Tennessee and and Indiana would be amongst the first to get swine flu vaccinations. The outbreak of the H1N1 swine flu virus has sadly killed over 3,900 peope per a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) on September 25th. At the same time the race to battle the pandemic has propped up the shares of biotech companies that promise solutions.

   Mass vaccination programs are expected to be developed in every U.S. state. Also nine countries that include Australia, Brazil, Britain, France, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the U.S. will lead the way to ensure that less developed nations are not left behind and have their own stockpiles. With the coming colder months and the flu season, government officials are scheduled to distribute H1N1 vaccines more widely, potentially leading to larger profits in the pharmaceutical sector.
   
   Companies such as the Parisian Sanofi-Aventis [SNY 36.23 --- UNCH (0) ] has contracted about 75.3 million doses of H1N1 vaccine to the U.S government and other big pharmaceutical names such as AstraZena [AZN 43.64 --- UNCH (0) ], GlaxoSmithKline [GSK 38.72 --- UNCH (0) ], and Novartis [NVS 49.59 --- UNCH (0) ] will also supply the government with a total of 250 million more doses by the end of the year.    The surge in demand has led to big gains in the past 5 months. Stocks of companies such as the San Diego developer of antiviral vaccines, Inovio Biomedical [INO 1.69 --- UNCH (0) ] and Hemispherx BioPharma [HEB 1.88 --- UNCH (0) ] have rallied the most as each has gained over 340% and 250% since the spread of the swine flu H1N1 back in April.
   
   Will these pharmaceutical stocks survive the hype once preventative H1N1 shots become readily available to the public in October or will the rally flop? A controversy surrounds the issue because some states such as New York are expecting to make the H1N1 vaccine mandatory for the health services industry as per a USA Today Report (see story here). However, governmental agencies in Canada may be even suspending seasonal flu shots in several of its provinces such as British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia due to a Canadian study that suggests that people vaccinated against the seasonal flu may run twice the risk of contracting the swine flu-H1N1, per a report publish by The Vancouver Sun

    Timing of flu vaccines can be confusing for various age groups

    Despite the best efforts of health officials to educate the public about the flu vaccine, more than a few people are more than a little confused this year.
    
    This is inevitable given the existence of H1N1, a new strain of the virus. This means that we have two vaccines -- one for the "seasonal" flu, and one for H1N1, and to be immunized against both, people will need two vaccinations.
    
    This leads to the second area of confusion: While public health authorities were originally planning to make immunizations available for everyone for the seasonal flu in October, and then for H1N1 when the vaccine becomes available in November, most provinces, including British Columbia, have changed course.
    
    Specifically, B.C. plans to focus on first ensuring that everyone has access to the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available in November, and will then offer the seasonal flu vaccine in early 2010.
    
    There are several reasons for this reversal of the order in which vaccines will be made available: First, preliminary research from several Canadian jurisdictions, including B.C., has found that people who received previous seasonal flu shots were at increased risk of acquiring H1N1.
    
    Health authorities are therefore concerned that if all or most Canadians receive the seasonal flu shot first, they may be more likely to come down with H1N1.
    
    It is not entirely clear if this is likely, since other jurisdictions, including the United States, Britain and Australia, have not found an association between receiving the seasonal flu shot and susceptibility to H1N1. This unfortunately adds to the confusion, and consequently the Canadian research is being peer-reviewed.
    
    But there is another reason for the decision to immunize against H1N1 first: Epidemiological evidence suggests that H1N1 will be the predominant strain of flu this season. It seems to make good sense, then, to focus our efforts on protecting people against the greatest threat.
    
    There is one exception to this vaccine regime, which unfortunately makes things more confusing still: People over 65 and those in long-term-care homes will have access to the seasonal flu vaccine in October, before the H1N1 vaccine becomes available.
    
    The reasons for this are twofold: First, people over 65 are at greatest risk from the seasonal flu, which disproportionately affects the elderly. And second, H1N1 presents less risk to the elderly than it does to younger people, because the elderly were exposed to a similar virus that existed before 1957, which allowed them to develop some immunity to H1N1.
    
    So just as we focus on immunizing younger people against their greatest threat (H1N1), so we emphasize immunizing older people against their greatest threat (seasonal flu.) But ultimately, everyone will have access to vaccines for both viruses.
    
    In case this is still unclear, let us sum it up:
    
    You need to receive two separate vaccinations to be immunized against the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus.
    
    The seasonal flu vaccine will be available in mid-October for those over 65 and those in long-term care homes.
    
    The H1N1 vaccine will be available for everyone in November, and the seasonal flu vaccine will be available for everyone under 65 in early 2010.

    LONDON (Dow Jones)--U.K.-based drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK) Tuesday said governments around the world have so far ordered 440 million doses of its pandemic swine flu vaccine Pandemrix as they brace for a possible resurgence of the illness.
    
    "Discussions continue with governments for further supplies," the company added in a statement. Glaxo and other big pharmaceutical companies have raced to develop a vaccine against H1N1 swine flu ahead of a possible spread of the virus in the northern hemisphere this autumn and winter.
    
    In August, Glaxo, the world's second-largest drugmaker, said it had contracts in place to supply 291 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine. Twenty-two additional governments have ordered another 149 million doses, the company said. First supplies of Glaxo's vaccine are scheduled to commence this week.
    
    A company spokeswoman declined to provide details on the delivery schedule but said shipments would be phased in to multiple destinations simultaneously.
    
    GlaxoSmithKline has not released terms on government contracts or broken out cost per dose of the vaccine. European regulators recently approved Pandemrix amid deep concern about the new winter influenza season and an upturn in U.K. cases of swine flu.
    
    The U.K. government's Health Protection Agency estimated there were 14,000 new cases of swine flu in England during the last full week of September, up from 9,000 the previous week, and 5,000 the week before that, indicating rising infections among school age children following the start of the academic year.
    
    "It does suggest that during the summer months swine flu was sleeping, not dead," said Charles Stanley analyst Jeremy Batstone-Carr.
    
    "(GlaxoSmithKline's statement) is a pretty timely announcement." Batstone-Carr said GlaxoSmithKline had first mover advantage in the swine flu vaccine field, but added that Tuesday's announcement was unlikely to make a big difference to the company's share price.

    GlaxoSmithKline maakt extra griepvaccins
    
    GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) produceert op vraag van overheden nog eens 149 miljoen vaccins tegen de Mexicaanse griep bij. Hiermee komt het totaal aantal dosissen van GSK op 440 miljoen. Het farmabedrijf stelt dat het deze week is begonnen met het leveren van de vaccins.
    
    (tijd) - Het Britse GSK heeft 22 bijkomende bestellingen gekregen van overheden om vaccins te produceren tegen de Mexicaanse griep. Hierdoor moet het alles samen 440 miljoen dosissen aanmaken. De vaccins worden ontwikkeld in Rixensart, waar de hoofdzetel van de vaccinafdeling van GSK is gevestigd. De productie van de vaccins gebeurt in Duitsland en Canada.
    
    België bestelde zijn vaccins tegen A/H1N1 al enkele maanden geleden bij GSK. België vroeg 12,6 miljoen dosissen. Dat is een dosis per volwassene en twee voor kinderen. GSK stelt verder nog te onderhandelen met overheden, om nog meer te kunnen produceren. Wat de impact van de extra productie zal zijn op de resultaten van de groep, wordt voorlopig niet vrijgegeven. Maar naar verluidt moeten de productievestigingen nu tot 60 procent meer draaien dan gebruikelijk. GSK doet daarom een beroep op externe bedrijven, onder meer om de vaccins in flacons te verpakken.
    
    GSK is sinds 5 oktober begonnen met het leveren van zijn vaccins. De eerste ladingen zijn per schip vertrokken. Onder meer naar de Verenigde Staten, die ook aanklopten bij GSK. De farmagroep gaat ervan uit dat ze nog tot de zomer van 2010 vaccins tegen de Mexicaanse griep zal produceren.
    
    De vaccins worden momenteel nog getest op mensen. Alles samen nemen 10.000 vrijwilligers deel aan de onderzoeken. GSK gaat ervan uit dat het toedienen van het vaccin lokaal wat spierpijn zal veroorzaken en ook een korte tijd een rood, gezwollen plekje zal geven. Maar de neveneffecten zouden uiteindelijk niet erger zijn dan die van een gewoon vaccin.

    Weerstand tegen vaccin Mexicaanse griep groeit

    Een meerderheid van de 400.000 verpleegkundigen in Nederland piekert er niet over zich te laten vaccineren tegen de Mexicaanse griep. Dit blijkt uit een onderzoek van de NOS in samenwerking met brancheorganisaties KNMG van artsen en de V&VN van verpleegkundigen.
    
    Huiver bij medisch personeel
    Het is de eerste voorbode van een door experts voorspelde antibeweging nu de eerste vaccinaties tegen de griep spoedig kunnen worden gegeven. Ook in het buitenland is een groeiende schare van weigeraars.
    
    Ruim 54% van de verpleegkundigen en verzorgenden in Nederland is niet van plan zich te laten inenten tegen de Mexicaanse griep. Ook een kleine 28% van de artsen is daartoe niet bereid, zo blijkt uit het onderzoek.
    
    Wantrouwen
    
    Op webfora voor verpleegkundigen zoals Ziekenhuisforum.nl. valt het wantrouwen af te lezen. 'Ik ga niet voor proefkonijn spelen.' En: 'In mijn lijf geen Mexicaanse griepspuit.' Veelgehoord is ook de mening: 'Door vaccinatie word ik misschien niet ziek, maar ik kan mensen nog steeds aansteken.'
    
    De belangrijkste redenen om zich niet te laten vaccineren, zijn het idee dat het meevalt met de Mexicaanse griep en een 'gevoelsmatige weerstand'. Wantrouwen is er ook over het feit dat er onvoldoende tijd zou zijn genomen om het vaccin afdoende te testen.
    
    Klink
    
    Een deel van de verpleegkundigen is nu juist door minister Klink van Volksgezondheid geselecteerd om als een van de eerste groepen te worden gevaccineerd. Klink stelt dat verpleegkundigen en artsen ongewild ernstig zieke patiënten kunnen besmetten en die kunnen in het ergste geval overlijden. In een reactie op de enquête zou hij hebben gesteld dat verpleegkundigen de komende maand beter moeten worden geïnformeerd over de griep.
    
    Een woordvoerder van de V&VN-organisatie van verpleegkundigen zegt niet verrast te zijn. 'Er waren al langere tijd dergelijke signalen. Verpleegkundigen denken, net als het grote publiek, dubbel over de noodzaak van vaccinatie. Jammer, want onze organisatie staat achter het vaccineren en verpleegkundigen hebben een verantwoordelijkheid naar de patiënten. Er is blijkbaar nog veel communicatie nodig om de gevoelsmatige weerstand weg te nemen.'
    
    Verenigde Staten
    
    Ook in de Verenigde Staten is sprake van verzet tegen de in dat land verplichte vaccinatie voor mensen die werkzaam zijn in de gezondheidszorg. Voor 30 november moet een half miljoen verpleegkundigen en artsen zijn ingeënt. In New York start de grootschalige vaccinatie volgende week.
    
    Veel verpleegkundigen in de VS twijfelen aan de betrouwbaarheid van het vaccin. Velen refereren aan het drama in 1976, toen tientallen mensen overleden nadat zij tegen de varkensgriep waren ingeënt.
    
    Ouders
    
    Persbureau Reuters bericht dat bijna twee derde van de ouders in de VS hun kind niet laat inenten tegen de Mexicaanse griep. Dit blijkt uit een onderzoek dat door een consumentenorganisatie in de eerste week van september is gehouden onder 1500 volwassenen.
    
    De helft van de ouders stelt de beslissing om te vaccineren uit, vooral omdat ze betwijfelen of het vaccin wel afdoende is getest. Dezelfde zorgen worden gedeeld door 14% van de ouders die al besloten hebben om niet tot vaccinatie over te gaan.
    
    Ongeveer een derde van de ondervraagde ouders stelt dat de beslissing om te vaccineren wel al is genomen. Van de ouders is 43% weinig bezorgd over de kans dat hun kind de griep krijgt. Een even groot percentage is wel bezorgd.

    Eerste Mexicaanse griepdode in Duitsland

    BERLIJN (ANP) - In Duitsland is de eerste dode als gevolg van de Mexicaanse griep gevallen. Een 36-jarige vrouw overleed in een ziekenhuis in Essen aan complicaties van de ziekte, meldde de universiteitskliniek in die West-Duitse stad donderdag. Dat berichtte het Duitse weekblad Stern.
    
    Wetenschappers constateerden naast het virus bij de met overgewicht kampende patiënte meerdere resistente bacteriën. Het virus had ,,de deur wagenwijd opengezet'' voor die andere bacteriën. De vrouw overleed eind september doordat haar longen en andere organen niet meer functioneerden.

    Google brengt griep in kaart

    Google heeft een flutrends gelanceerd, een nieuwe website met informatie over de verspreiding van de griep. Daarbij wordt gebruikt gemaakt van het zoekgedrag van internetgebruikers. Aan de hand van zoektermen als ‘griep’, ’symptomen’, en ’spierpijn’ kan worden bekeken hoe de griep zich verspreidt.
    
    Een soortgelijk project ging vorig jaar november al van start in de Verenigde Staten, maar de site google.org/flutrends is er nu ook voor Nederland, België, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Oostenrijk, Hongarije, Polen, Spanje en Zweden.
    
    Volgens Google speuren meer mensen naar gegevens over de ziekte naarmate die meer voorkomt in de regio waar ze wonen. Volgens professor Yossi Matias van Google, die het nieuws donderdag in Brussel bekendmaakte, kan vroegtijdige informatie over de verspreiding van de griep ervoor zorgen dat minder mensen besmet raken.
    
    Betrouwbaar
    Grieptrends vergelijkt zoekpatronen met publieke gegevens die afkomstig zijn van het Europees Centrum voor ziektepreventie en -bestrijding (ECDC). Uit eerder onderzoek van Yahoo bleek al dat er samenhang is tussen het aantal keer dat wordt gezocht op ‘griep’ en ‘influenza’ en de griepcijfers van officiële instanties.
    
    Om te controleren hoe betrouwbaar dat is, vergeleek Google haar historische resultaten sinds 2004 met die van het Amerikaanse Center for Disease Control en Prevention (CDC). De pieken bleken exact overeen te komen met de de achteraf door CDC gemeten griepgevallen.
    
    Traditionele methoden
    Traditionele methoden om gevallen van griep in kaart te brengen, zoals het houden van enquêtes onder artsen en patiënten, kunnen ongeveer 1 tot 2 weken in beslag nemen door de noodzaak om gegevens te verzamelen en openbaar te maken. De zoekopdrachten van Google bieden daarentegen een directe, nauwkeurige afspiegeling van de griepactiviteit binnen een bepaalde regio.
    
    In Nederland is, afgaande op Grieptrends, de griepactiviteit nog laag. De site wordt dagelijks geupdated.

    Sanofi: één shot tegen Mexicaanse griep voldoende

    Eén in plaats van twee doses tegen de Mexicaanse griep volstaat. Zelfs adjuvans (versterkende stoffen) zijn niet nodig,
    
    Dat zegt vaccinproducent Sanofi Pasteur, de vaccindivisie van het Franse farmaconcern Sanofi-Aventis. De mededeling staat haaks op het beleid van minister Klink van Volksgezondheid inzake de pandemie.
    
    Een enkele dosis van het vaccin tegen de Mecicaanse griep roept voldoende immuniteit op. Dit blijkt uit voorlopige analyses van twee klinische onderzoeken die het concern met zijn pandemische vaccins uitvoert in Finland en Frankrijk.
    
    Adjuvans
    
    Volgens een woordvoerder van Sanofi Pasteur MSD in Hoofddorp, de Europese joint venture van Sanofi met het Amerikaanse Merck, betekent deze uitslag inderdaad dat het concern aanbeveelt slechts één dosering te nemen. ‘Bovendien’, voegt hij er aan toe, ‘kun je zelfs volstaan met een niet-geadjuventeerd vaccin.’
    
    De conclusies van Sanofi staan haaks op het vaccinbeleid van minister Ab Klink van Volksgezondheid. Klink heeft vorige maand op advies van de Gezondheidsraad nog eens bevestigd dat de risicogroepen in Nederland twee shots zullen krijgen. De brieven van de huisartsen, die de inenting voor hun rekening nemen, zijn in veel gevallen al de deur uitgegaan.
    
    'Te dun'
    
    Klink deed zijn mededeling twee weken geleden in weerwil van het feit, dat vaccinproducent Novartis, die een pandemisch vaccin voor Nederland levert, had aangegeven dat één shot voldoende leek te zijn. André Knottnerus, voorzitter van de Gezondheidsraad, zei in reactie daarop tegen deze krant dat de onderzoeken waarop Novartis zich baseerde, ‘te dun’ zijn.
    
    Na Novartis komt nu dus ook Sanofi Pasteur met dezelfde mededeling. Sanofi scherpt de betekenis daarvan nog verder aan door te stellen, dat ook zijn pandemische vaccins-versie zonder adjuvans (versterkende stoffen) voldoende immuniteit oplevert.
    
    Solvay
    
    Dat is saillant, omdat minister Klink, op advies van de Gezondheidsraad, eind mei dit jaar op het allerlaatste moment een streep heeft gehaald door een contract dat medio 2006 was gesloten met Solvay Pharmaceuticals in Weesp. Dat contract, dat voorzag in een leveringsverplichting voor Solvay, maar geen afnameverplichting door de overheid, was voor de levering van een pandemisch vaccin als dat nodig zou zijn.
    
    Solvay werd eind mei echter vervangen door de combinatie Novartis en GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) omdat, aldus de Gezondheidsraad, die combinatie in tegenstelling tot Solvay, een geadjuventeerd vaccin kon leveren.
    
    Spoeddebat
    
    Vanavond houdt de Tweede Kamer met de minister een spoeddebat over het vaccinbeleid en de rol van viroloog Ab Osterhaus in het bijzonder. Osterhaus is directeur van het Nationaal Influenza Centrum (NIZ) in Rotterdam in welke hoedanigheid hij de minister adviseert voor het beleid in de pandemie.
    
    Osterhaus’ rol staat ter discussie omdat hij de schijn van belangenverstrengeling tegen zich heeft doordat hij aandelen bezit in bedrijfjes die voor de vaccinindustrie werken. Woensdag schreef deze krant dat Osterhaus ook een belang heeft in Insolva, een Zweeds bedrijf dat zich richt op de ontwikkeling van adjuvans.

    VWS: verdeel ongebruikte griepvaccins

    DEN HAAG (ANP) - Gezondheidsinstellingen die minder dan 75 vaccins tegen de Mexicaanse griep nodig denken te hebben, kunnen de overgebleven vaccins delen met andere gezondheidsinstellingen. Het ministerie van Volksgezondheid (VWS) heeft ze dat deze week gevraagd.
    
    Het Nederlands Vaccin Instituut levert alleen hoeveelheden van honderd vaccins tegelijk. ,,De overgebleven vaccins moeten anders worden weggegooid,'' aldus een woordvoerder van het ministerie van VWS vrijdag.
    
    ,,Er wordt wel eens wat ongebruikt gelaten, maar op een totaal van 10 miljoen bestelde vaccins is dat maar een klein percentage.''
    
    Risicopatiënten
    
    Volgens de woordvoerder gaat het om tien tot vijftien gezondheidsinstellingen die minder dan honderd vaccins nodig hebben om risicopatiënten en gezondheidswerkers in te enten tegen het griepvirus. De vaccins mogen niet verpakt worden in kleinere hoeveelheden omdat er maar één bijsluiter in het doosje zit. ,,Zonder bijsluiter vervalt de garantie.''
    
    Circa zevenduizend instellingen kunnen deze week vaccins tegen de Mexicaanse griep bestellen.

    Ik lees 10x liever het nieuws dan het onderlinge gemekker waar nagenoeg elk draadje van Crucell mee wordt vervuild. Daar heb ik echt niets aan terwijl de info bijeengebracht door Voda tenminste relevantie heeft mbt. het draadje.
