India's Kalyani group in talks to buy bid target Corus arm - report
NEW DELHI - India's Kalyani industrial group has begun talks with potential bid target UK steel firm Corus Group Plc to buy some of the top steelmaker's units, India's Business Standard reported.

The report came after India's biggest private steel firm Tata Steel announced last week it was considering an offer for Corus Group, worth more than 8.0 bln usd at current share prices.

The Kalyani group, owner of the world's second biggest forging firm Bharat Forge Co Ltd, held 'high-level talks for a possible acquisition of a part of the business' of Corus,' the newspaper said, quoting sources close to the group.

The newspaper said it was not known which Corus units were being discussed for sale, but noted Corus agreed to sell most of its aluminium assets to Aleris International of the US in March.

It said the Kalyani acquisition would be independent of any Tata-Corus deal.

Corus, the world's ninth biggest steelmaker, refused to comment on the report, while a Kalyani group spokeswoman said she could not comment as its top executives were in Europe, the newspaper said.

India's Kalyani Group Says It Isn't Interested in Corus's Units

    By Thomas Kutty Abraham

Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- India's unlisted Kalyani Group, which owns Kalyani Steels, said it isn't in talks with Corus Group Plc, the U.K. steelmaker that may be a bid target for Tata Steel Ltd., India's second-biggest producer of the metal.

The Pune-based group was in negotiations with Corus to buy some of its assets, India's Business Standard newspaper reported today, without saying where it got the information. The Kalyani Group also owns Bharat Forge Ltd.

``We are not having any discussions with Corus,'' Kalyani Group Chairman Baba Kalyani said in a phone interview today. ``We are not looking at buying any of the Corus assets.''

Tata Steel said Oct. 5 it was looking at ``various opportunities,'' including the British steelmaker, raising the prospect of the largest overseas takeover by an Indian company. Shares in Corus rose 16.3 percent that day.

Bharat Forge was open to buying manufacturing assets that would benefit its businesses, Kalyani said, without elaborating.
