Corus in merger talks with Russia's Evraz - report

    Tue Mar 21, 2006 12:09 AM GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus (CS.L: Quote, Profile, Research) has reportedly held talks with Evraz Group SA (HK1q.L: Quote, Profile, Research) , Russia's largest steel producer, over a possible merger.
A report on the ft.com (www.ft.com) Web site published on Monday said the two companies had been in talks to create one of the world's top six steelmakers by volume.

An unnamed person familiar with the situation was reported to have said the talks had so far not yielded any results.

A spokeswoman for Corus said she had no comment on the report.

"All we have said is that we are in the initial stages of looking at opportunities in low-cost high-growth countries like Russia and Brazil," she said.

The Financial Times report quoted an unnamed banker as saying: "It is interesting to hear of these talks, but I would certainly not bet on anything happening as a result."

In recent months Corus chief executive Philippe Varin has mentioned his desire to seek opportunities in emerging markets.

Corus, the Anglo-Dutch steel company, has held talks with Evraz, Russia's largest steel producer, over a possible merger that would create one of the world's top six steelmakers by volume, according to a person close to the negotiations.

Evraz, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange and has a market capitalisation of about $8.5bn, produces cheap slabs – a steel product in which Corus has expressed interest.

Philippe Varin, Corus chief executive, said last week the company was examining the possibility of partnerships with unnamed steelmakers round the world to source low-cost raw steel – "slab" – which could be processed in finishing operations close to the final customer in the UK.

Russia and Brazil are the main sources of such steel.

Corus said: "It is Corus' policy not to comment on market speculation. As previously stated, Corus has said that in the general development of the company, it is continually exploring opportunities in low-cost, higher-growth countries, including access to low-cost slab and raw materials."

The tabular content relating to this article is not available to view. Apologies in advance for the inconvenience caused.Evraz declined to comment. For any company to buy Corus outright would probably cost more than £5bn, according to steel analysts.

A person familiar with the situation said the talks had so far not yielded any results. He said it might be difficult for a Russian company to buy assets in the UK and some form of partnership was more likely.

One banker said: "It is interesting to hear of these talks but I would certainly not bet on anything happening as a result."

If a deal were to proceed, a combined Corus/Evraz would link the world's eighth and 12th largest steelmakers, creating a group with annual output of some 32m tonnes.

Up we go.., of een spoedig bod ?,. komen binnenkort de troeven op tafel? .., immers als iemand Corus wil kopen, moet ie niet te lang wachten,?? het kan nu snel gaan,.
