GRAHAM-BAM healthcare partnership to build new children’s hospital in Belfast

Northern Ireland — The GRAHAM-BAM Healthcare Partnership (GBHP) has been awarded the contract to construct a new, state-of-the-art children’s hospital at the Royal Victoria Hospital site in Belfast.
The project, recently approved by Health Minister Mike Nesbitt, represents a significant investment in paediatric healthcare for Northern Ireland, totalling £671 million.
Construction costs alone are estimated at £389 million, funded through the Department of Health’s capital budget.
The ten-storey hospital will span 52,000 square metres and is designed to accommodate up to 45,000 children annually.
The facility will include 155 beds, 11 theatres, a dedicated emergency department, a modern imaging suite, and a comprehensive outpatient department.
A key focus of the design is to elevate the standard of paediatric care, with 80 per cent of beds situated in private ensuite rooms.
The hospital will also feature dedicated parent facilities, social spaces, and staff areas.
Construction is slated to take five years. Jonathan Hall, GRAHAM Managing Director, emphasised the importance of the project, stating: “This project is a major step forward for healthcare in Northern Ireland, and we are honoured to be delivering such a critical facility for future generations.
“The new hospital will provide state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, ensuring the best possible care for children and their families.”
GBHP brings a wealth of experience to the project, having previously delivered healthcare projects in Northern Ireland, including the Royal Victoria Hospital’s Belfast Maternity Unit Phase B1, a five-storey unit designed to meet the evolving needs of expectant mothers and their families, which was completed in April 2024.
