   ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel’s India joint venture’s AM Mining India has completed the acquisition of Uttam Galva Steels, a downstream steel manufacturer in Maharashtra., ArcelorMittal Executive Vice President Mr Dilip Oommen has warmly welcomed Uttam Galva Steels’ employees into the fold of the ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel joint venture family. He said “Together, we will embark on a journey of collaboration and excellence to produce smarter steels for our discerning customers.”
   
   Completion of the acquisition process follows the recent approval by the National Company Law Tribunal, Mumbai, of a resolution plan for Uttam Galva Steels Ltd, submitted by AM Mining India Pvt Ltd, under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
   
   Uttam Galva Steels has its manufacturing facilities at Khopoli, with an annual capacity of 1.2 Million Tonnes Per Annum. The company has a wide basket of downstream value-added products, catering to various industries and distribution segments.
   
   Uttam Galva Steels is a strategic addition to ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel joint venture, which also operates ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) that has robust downstream capabilities, thus increasing domestic market opportunities.

   World’s leading integrated steel and mining company ArcelorMittal said that July-September 2022 quarter performance was impacted by a negative price-cost effect, energy costs headwinds and a 5.6% sequential decrease in steel shipments to 13.6 million tonnes & 7.1% lower YoY as steel shipments remained broadly stable YoY excluding ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih which is impacted by the ongoing war in Ukraine. ArcelorMittal Chief Executive Officer Mr Aditya Mittal said “The strong market conditions enjoyed for much of the past two years deteriorated in the third quarter as seasonally lower shipments, a reduction in exceptional price levels, destocking and higher energy costs combined to put profits under pressure. The business responded quickly to the changing environment, cutting higher cost capacity to manage addressable demand and reduce fixed costs, and reducing European gas consumption by 30%.

   Staalmakers koelen af op de beurs, en daarmee nadert onheil voor de economie. Twee jaar lang hadden de leveranciers ondanks meerdere crises nog de wind in de rug: tijdens corona stimuleerden overheden grote infrastructuurobjecten en offshore windparken met veel meer orders voor staalbalken, buizen en plaatstaal. De klus- en bouwwoede onder thuiszitters in de pandemie gaf de markt voor dunner gewalst en bewerkt staal ook een zetje.
   
   Die rugwind is gaan liggen, meldden donderdag de grote toeleveranciers ArcelorMittal en Aperam bij hun gepresenteerde kwartaalcijfers. China zet zijn industriële regio in Guangzhou weer op slot om coronabesmettingen te beperken. Zijn economische groei is nu 2,8%, tegen dik 8% in 2021.
   
   De prijs van wapeningsstaal voor vloeren en warmgewalst staal daalt door een gebrek aan vraag, hoewel bouwprojecten in september en oktober doorgaans pieken. China is de grootste inkoper, maar de winst op gegoten staalbielzen is daar inmiddels totaal verdwenen.
   
   Staal maken is al jaren een keiharde strijd met dunne marges. De grootste producenten zoals ArcelorMittal en de Chinese mastodonten Baowu en Hebei overleefden de concurrentie in standaard staal door kleinere bedrijven op te slokken. Hebei komt voort uit Tang Steel en Han Steel. Ansteel, dat in 2021 Benxi kocht, gaat in China bijvoorbeeld samen met Beng Sang. Of ze overleven dankzij gespecialiseerde staalproducten, zoals bij fusiebedrijf ArcelorMittal-dochter Aperam met roestvaststaal tegen corrosie voor bijvoorbeeld keukens en industrie, een niche met hoge marges opzoeken.
   
   Vervuilend
   Staal is nodig, maar producenten zijn vanwege de kolenstook en uitstoot steeds minder geliefd. Producent Tata Steel vocht deze week in de Tweede Kamer voor zijn voortbestaan nu het RIVM zijn ovens als bron van zware gezondheidsklachten ziet. Sommige deeltjes veroorzaken kanker. Aan de overzijde van de Noordzee waarschuwden Britse bedrijven dat zij, bij veel minder strenge milieueisen, het financieel onderuit gaan als de overheid niet bijspringt.
   
   Staalmakers zijn de kanaries in de kolenmijn. Slaan ze minder ijzererts en kolen in, dan zal vanwege de enorme staalvolumes voor nieuwe woningen, bruggen, distributiecentra en auto’s waarschijnlijk de economische groei vertragen. ArcelorMittal zette afgelopen kwartaal bij $19 miljard groepsverkopen in Europa ruim 12% minder kolen en 7% minder staal op schip en trein richting klanten. In mei rekende ArcelorMittal nog op 2 tot 4% vraagafname.
   
   Sinds dit voorjaar waarschuwt het concern al voor een structurele krimp van de vraag. Sectorschattingen gaan uit van 20% minder staalaankopen. Dat wordt komende maanden niet beter, ziet ceo Aditya Mittal in zijn orderboek. Bank ING meldde in de driemaandcijfers een ’strong beat’ voor het bedrijfsresultaat. Toch halveerde het bedrijfsresultaat, netto zakten verdiensten met 80% op jaarbasis.
   
   Overaanbod
   Aperam ’verraste’ de markt donderdag positief. Maar dat ging gepaard met een 40% lagere kwartaalwinst, 20% minder verscheept staal. Zijn ceo Timoteo Di Maulo waarschuwt nu al voor minder verdiensten tot eind 2022.
   
   De staalmarkt vertoont weer historische trekken: overaanbod, bij te weinig structurele vraag.
   
   Alleen door hun kosten drastisch te beperken, ArcelorMittal schakelde meerdere ovens uit en bespaarde 30% op zijn gasverbruik, slagen ze erin hun verdiensten overeind te houden. Meer Europese fabrieken zouden, bij minder vraag uit China, hun ovens op een laag pitje zetten. Gelukkig is ijzererts, de basis van staalmakerij, in prijs gezakt, het koerst bijna op het niveau van voor de Russische inval in Oekraïne. Kolen voor de ovens zijn in een jaar tijd wel 17% duurder geworden.
   
   Aangekondigde inkoopacties donderdag van eigen aandelen, doorgaans om beleggers te charmeren, hielpen weinig: de staalaandelen stegen donderdag minder dan de AEX. Aperam, met 39% koersverlies dit jaar, en ArcelorMittal (12% daling) zijn zelf koopjes geworden.

   Deze 'veteraan' (en bedankt!) gokt met beleggingen. Weliswaar niet zonder erbij na te denken maar ik ga geen adviezen geven. Het feit dat ik er nog volop inzit betekent dat ik er vertrouwen in hebben. Financieel gaat het goed, de schuld wordt nog steeds afgebouwd (gelukkig maar met stijgende rente) en de K/W-verhouding is m.i. te laag. Maar ja, toch moet 'er iets anders' zijn wat de koers tegenhoudt. Zolang Kotsja er met zijn verkeerde voorspellingen naast zit blijf ik positief.

   Before I hand over to Genuino, I would like to mention a few housekeeping items. Firstly, I want to refer everybody to the disclaimers that are on Slide 2 of the results presentation that we published on our website this morning. I'd also like to remind everyone that this call is being recorded and it's scheduled to last up to 45 minutes.

   With that, I would like to hand over the call to Genuino for some opening remarks.

   Thank you, Daniel, and thank you, and good afternoon, everybody. I will make some very brief remarks before we move to your questions.
   
   I have basically three main points to make. Firstly, on the current market situation. So, real demand headwinds are being exacerbated by destocking through the value chain. The destocking impact on the apparent demand is very significant, but we know from experience that it won't last. This gives us confidence that the apparent demand conditions will improve once the destocking phase reaches maturity.
   
   My second point is on our response. We are responding effectively by adapting our capacity for quarter four and reducing fixed costs on the impacted tonnes. At current spot levels, variable costs and by that, I mean, raw materials and energy on a per tonne basis are expected to decline in Q4. The improvements we have made in recent periods are being tested by this difficult market environment, but results should demonstrate that our business is stronger and more resilient.

    Africa’s leading steelmaker ArcelorMittal South Africa is supplying steel to the iconic Msikaba Bridge Project which is currently under construction near Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. Steel is a significant component in the finely engineered design of this iconic bridge. The technical complexity of this project required steel of a higher structural grade and length to be fully developed locally.
    
    Among other products, the bridge is being fabricated using world-class heavy gauge structural steel sections from the ArcelorMittal Rail and Structural Mill, recently launched at the Highveld Industrial Park in eMalahleni. It also makes use of structural steel plates of larger length and mass from the reconfigured plant at the company’s Vanderbijlpark Works. The sections are then pre-assembled before being delivered to site where final assembly takes place, with welding set to happen nearly 200m above the valley.
    
    The cable-stayed steel deck bridge spans the Msikaba River and forms part of the N2 Wild Coast Road Project, which aims to improve the travel time between Durban and East London for heavy freight vehicles. When complete, the bridge will have a main span of 580m, supported from a pair of 127m-tall pylons. The deck will be 194m above the valley floor, making it the third highest bridge in Africa.

    ArcelorMittal Invest in Asturias Galvanizing Line to Make Magnelis

    ArcelorMittal Spain is completing the remodeling of Galvanizing Line No 1 at the Asturias plant in Spain, which has involved an investment of more than 10 million euros, in order to be able to produce from January 2023 Magnelis, the metallic coated steel that offers exceptional resistance to corrosion.
    
    Since May 2017, the date on which the adaptation of Galvanizing Line No. 2 was completed to be able to manufacture this product in this facility given the growing market demand, ArcelorMittal Asturias produces Magnelis in a range of thicknesses from 0.5 to 2 mm. After the reform, it will be able to cover most of the demand for Magnelis in the Iberian market, a product that has become the benchmark for the solar sector as it is used in the construction of infrastructures for photovoltaic parks.
    
    ArcelorMittal's Magnelis product is metallic coated steel that offers exceptional performance in terms of corrosion resistance, providing optimal and long-lasting protection of the surface against wear and deterioration. Thanks to its unique chemical composition, Magnelis provides an exceptional level of protection on both coated surfaces and cutting edges, even in the most aggressive environments.
