   'Rapport pleit Shell vrij van olievervuiling'

   GENEVE (AFN) - Een onderzoek door de Verenigde Naties pleit oliemaatschappij Shell vrijwel volledig vrij van olievervuiling van de Nigeriaanse Niger-delta in de afgelopen 40 jaar. Dit meldt de Britse krant de Guardian op zijn website.
   
   Volgens de krant heeft het rapport, waaraan het Milieuprogramma van de Verenigde Naties (UNEP) drie jaar heeft gewerkt, tot woede geleid onder de lokale bevolking. Die voerden lange tijd campagne om de multinational te dwingen de vervuiling op te ruimen en schadevergoeding te betalen.
   
   Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat 10 procent van de olievervuiling in Ogoniland is veroorzaakt door mechanische mankementen of nalatigheid van het bedrijf. De rest van de vervuiling is te wijten aan diefstal van olie en sabotage van de oliepijpleidingen, concludeert het rapport.
   
   Aanzienlijke schade
   
   Mike Cowing, die het UNEP-team van honderd onderzoekers leidt, zei op een briefing in Wenen dat zeker driehonderd olielekken in Ogoniland aanzienlijke schade hebben veroorzaakt. Maar hij voegde daaraan toe dat 90 procent van deze incidenten zijn veroorzaakt door ,,bunkerende bendes'' die olie proberen te stelen.
   
   Milieudefensie heeft ernstige twijfels bij ,,de betrouwbaarheid van het onderzoek van UNEP, dat geheel is gebaseerd op cijfers van de oliemaatschappijen en bovendien is gefinancierd door Shell''. Het is betreurenswaardig dat de Verenigde Naties in dit onderzoek nog niet heeft gekeken naar andere bronnen, aldus woordvoerder Geert Ritsema.
   
   Sabotage
   
   De milieuorganisatie erkent dat er in Nigeria sabotage van olie-installaties en pijpleidingen plaatsvindt, maar niet op de schaal die de oliemaatschappijen en UNEP nu claimen. Milieudefensie wijst er in dit verband op dat het hier alleen om Ogoniland gaat, een klein gebied in de Niger-delta waar Shell door de explosieve situatie feitelijk geen toegang meer heeft.
   
   Ritsema: ,,Achterstallig onderhoud is ook een belangrijke oorzaak voor de lekkages, de directeur van Shell Nigeria gaf onlangs in een interview nog toe dat er honderden kilometers aan pijplijn liggen die niet goed zijn onderhouden en die vervangen moeten worden.''
   
   Cowing sprak tegen dat UNEP bij het onderzoek door Shell is beïnvloed. ,,Het is juist dat Shell de studie betaalt, dit is in overeenstemming met de internationaal aanvaarde norm van 'de vervuiler betaalt'. Geen enkele partij heeft de mogelijkheid om het onderzoek te beïnvloeden.'' Het volledige rapport zal in december verschijnen.

   Essar Oil beeindigt mogelijk gesprekken met Shell - TV
   
   
   MUMBAI (Dow Jones)--De private raffinaderij Essar Oil Ltd. is niet langer geinteresseerd in de Europese raffinaderijen die Royal Dutch Shell plc te koop heeft staan, meldt televisiestation ET Now dinsdag zonder bronnen te noemen.
   
   Shell startte eind vorig jaar exclusieve gesprekken met Essar over de verkoop van drie Europese raffinaderijen - Stanlow in het VK en de raffinaderijen Heide en Harburg in Duitsland - maar deze gesprekken hebben geen overeenkomst opgeleverd.
   
   Shell voert sindsdien ook gesprekken met andere partijen.
   
   Volgens ET Now zal Essar mogelijk nu de gesprekken met Shell beeindigen. Bij Essar Oil was nog niemand beschikbaar voor commentaar.
   
   Vorige week kondigde Shell aan een bindende overeenkomst te hebben bereikt met het private investeringsbedrijf Klesch & Co. Ltd. over de verkoop van de Heide-raffinaderij in Duitsland.

   LONDEN (Dow Jones)--Royal Dutch Shell plc zal zijn raffinaderij in Pernis in september gedeeltelijk sluiten voor onderhoud, zo stelt een bron die op de hoogte is van de situatie tegenover Dow Jones Newswires.
   
   Het onderhoud zal naar verwachting drie weken duren en behelst onder meer werk aan de hydrokraker en de hydro-ontzwavelings-eenheid, die belangrijk zijn bij de productie van gedistilleerde olieproducten, aldus de bron.
   
   Het onderhoud op Pernis, goed voor 400.000 vaten olie-equivalent per dag, zal gevolgen hebben voor de voorraden gedistilleerde olie in Noordwest-Europa, aldus de bron.

   Brazilian sugar and ethanol giant Cosan announced Wednesday that it had signed a binding agreement with Shell to form a $12 billion joint venture in Brazil for the production of ethanol, sugar and power, and the supply of transportation fuels.
   
   The new JV, which still requires regulatory approval, will consist of three companies, one responsible for the production of sugar and ethanol, another which will consist of the fuel distribution business and a third company which will take care of the administration of the JV.
   
   The agreement also states neither company or their affiliates outside the joint venture will compete with the newly formed companies.
   
   The board of the Shell-Cosan JV will be headed by Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello of Cosan as CEO and three Shell representatives. The companies will each have 50% of the voting rights.
   
   The proposed JV will have sales of about 18 billion liters/year of fuel and 4,500 service stations in Brazil, making it Brazil's third largest distribution business. It will also have annual ethanol production capacity of 2 billion liters.
   
   The JV will also deploy next generation biofuels technologies, as Shell's equity interests in Iogen Energy and Codexis were included in the partnership.
   
   "While there is still plenty of integration planning to do before we launch the proposed joint venture, this is an important milestone in our effort to create one of the world's most competitive sustainable biofuels companies," said Cosan's chairman Mello.
   
   The intention to form the JV was first announced on February 1, when the companies estimated the value of the deal at $12 billion.

   'Proefboring Noors gasveld Shell valt tegen'

   STAVANGER (AFN) - Het Norwegian Petroleum Directorate raamt de inhoud van een door Shell ontdekt gasveld aan de lage kant van de eerder geschatte 10 tot 100 miljard kubieke meter. Dat heeft het Noorse overheidsorgaan vrijdag bekendgemaakt op basis van de resultaten van proefboringen in het veld.
   
   Shell vond het zogenoemde Gro-veld in juni vorig jaar 350 kilometer uit de kust in de Noorse Zee. Het Brits-Nederlandse concern heeft een belang van 50 procent in het veld, het Noorse Statoil bezit 40 procent en het Franse GdF Suez de resterende 10 procent.
   
   De ontdekking van Gro gold destijds als potentieel een van de grootste vondsten in Noorwegen sinds 1997. In dat jaar werd het zogenoemde Ormen Lange-veld gevonden, een gasbel van 395 miljard kubieke meter die door Shell bestiert wordt.

   AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Royal Dutch Shell plc heeft maandag bevestigd dat het vorige week een intentieverklaring heeft getekend met het Finse energiebedrijf St1, om exclusieve gesprekken te starten over de verkoop van de downstream-activa in Zweden en Finland.
   
   De activa waar het om gaat betreffen pompstations, commerciele activiteiten en brandstof-operaties in beide landen en de Goteborg raffinaderij en maritieme transport-activiteiten in Zweden, zo zei een woordvoerder van Shell maandag tegen Dow Jones.
   
   De gesprekken betreffen echter niet de LPG-activiteiten en luchtvaartoperaties of upstream gasactiviteiten in Zweden, aldus de woordvoerder.
   
   St1 heeft zes bio-ethanolfabrieken in Finland en ongeveer 650 tankstations in Finland, Zweden, Noorwegen en Polen.

   SYDNEY/AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Royal Dutch Shell plc's hoofd van de Australische activiteiten, Ann Pickard, temperde dinsdag speculatie over fusies en overnames van vloeibaargasprojecten in de staat Queensland.
   
   Pickard zei dat ze mogelijk samenwerking ziet tussen de vier grote projecten op het gebied van infrastructuur, maar dat "consolidatie minder nodig is en mogelijk wel en mogelijk niet zal plaatsvinden".
   
   Pickard stelde dat haar voorganger Russell Caplan er duidelijk van overtuigd was dat consolidatie zou moeten plaatsvinden.
   
   "Maar ik denk dat op dit moment de drijfveer achter consolidatie meer de markt is dan de eigenlijke activiteiten (van de projecten)", voegde ze hieraan toe.
   
   Pickard volgde Caplan 1 augustus op.
   
   Shell ontwikkelt een project in de noordwestelijke staat van Australie met partner PetroChina co, dat tevens garant staat voor afname van een deel van het vloeibaar gemaakte gas.    HELSINKI (AFN) - Oliemaatschappij Shell voert exclusieve onderhandelingen met het Finse energiebedrijf St1 over de verkoop van de Zweedse raffinaderij-activiteiten. Dat hebben de twee bedrijven maandag bekendgemaakt.
   
   Financiële details zijn niet onthuld, maar de betreffende rafffinaderij in Gotenburg is met een productiecapaciteit van 78.000 vaten ruwe olie per dag relatief klein. Shell wil ongeveer 15 procent van zijn raffinaderijen verkopen omdat de winstmarges bij deze activiteiten naar verwachting nog lange tijd zwak blijven.

    PERTH, Sept 7 AAP - Royal Dutch Shell says it's not preparing to take over Woodside Petroleum Ltd.
    
    It also expects a decision on whether to proceed with its Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) project off Western Australia will be made within months.
    
    Shell executive vice-president of Upstream Australia, Ann Pickard, says the energy giant isn't in the hunt for LNG-focused Woodside, which is 34 per cent held by the Dutch company.
    
    "We are not getting ready to buy it again," Ms Pickard told a business briefing in Perth on Tuesday.
    
    Shell failed to gain control of Woodside in 2001 when the Australian government blocked the move, citing national interest issues.
    
    Recent media reports speculated Shell and BHP Billiton Ltd were preparing a joint bid for Woodside last year.
    
    Ms Pickard told the briefing Shell expected to make a final investment decision to proceed with Prelude in the next few months.
    
    The Prelude field, some 475 kilometres north-northeast of Broome, is set to be the world's first floating LNG development when it begins production in 2016.
    
    Ms Pickard also said Shell would look to non-traditional sources for labour for Prelude, amid expectations Chevron's massive Gorgon LNG project will hog skilled workers.
    
    Gorgon, which is 25 per cent held by Shell, is expected to start production in 2014 and create 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities at peak construction.
    
    "I see Roy (Krzywosinski, managing director of Chevron Australia) and my good friends from Chevron were at one of our refineries the other day recruiting for Gorgon," she joked during the presentation.
    
    "Gorgon is running a couple of years ahead of us, so I think they'll get a (processing) train up and we'll get them back.
    
    "While we're competitors, we're also colleagues ... and I think that is a really good challenge.
    
    "We will be going into Australia to non-traditional (sources), say the mines and refining industries and the other trades, to look for operators."
    
    She said Shell would over the next five years send 200 people to LNG plants around the world, along with deepwater plants and marine institutions to gain the necessary skills.
    
    Ms Pickard said Australia was poised to take the lead with new generation oil and gas developments, but it wasn't as stable a jurisdiction as perceived by some.
    
    "The stars may have aligned for Australia," she said.
    
    "The gas was discovered decades ago but the combination of one, the technology and two, the market being available, have come together to provide the opportunity for Australia to move into the forefront."
    
    But Australia's gas renaissance may not happen if "above-ground risks" such as tax regime changes scare off the industry.
    
    Ms Pickard said Nigeria, one of Shell's prime investment destinations, tried to introduce a new tax code and lost about $100 billion worth of oil and gas investment over the past five years.
    
    She said "above-ground risks" in WA included petroleum retention licence issues, unions and changing fiscal regimes.
    
    However, customers would queue up for Australian gas to diversify their gas sources from the other two majors suppliers, the Middle East and Russia.
    
    "They like to not have all their eggs in one basket," Ms Pickard said.

    BRASILIA (Dow Jones)--Royal Dutch Shell overweegt de verkoop van zijn belang in vier Braziliaanse offshore olieblokken aan een "select groepje geinteresseerde partijen", maakte het concern woensdag bekend.
    
    "Als onderdeel van een voortdurende inspanning om waarde voor onze aandeelhouders te creeren, maakt Shell bekend dat het zijn deelname in enkele aardolie en gasexploratie, en productie blokken ter beschikking heeft gesteld aan een selecte groep van mogelijk geïnteresseerde partijen", aldus het bedrijf.
    
    Shell zei dat de opbrengsten worden gebruikt voor zijn wereldwijde investeringsprogramma, "waar ook aanzienlijke investeringen in Brazilie onder vallen".

    RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Global oil company Royal Dutch Shell unveiled plans on Wednesday to sell its stake in four Brazilian offshore blocks, including a field in the vast deepwater subsalt region.
    
    The company said it would sell its stakes in the BS-4, BM-S-8, BM-S-45 and BM-ES-28 blocks. The projects also include investment by Brazil's state oil company Petrobras , U.S.-based Chevron , Portugal's Galp and Brazilian miner Vale .
    
    "Shell reaffirms that it continues to see Brazil as a key area for exploration and production," the company said in an e-mailed statement. "This initiative has no impact on our vision for Shell's future growth and development in the country."
    
    Shell's action comes as the government seeks congressional approval to revamp the nation's oil laws to increase state control of Brazil's new-found oil wealth. Shell has also diversified into biofuels in Brazil, seeking a foothold in ethanol production in one of that fuel's largest producers.
    
    The company holds 20 percent of the BM-S-8 block in the subsalt region that includes the Bem-Te-Vi discovery. The region is a vast area of deep water oil deposits that are buried under the ocean's floor beneath a layer of salt.
    
    Analysts believe the area could hold 50 billion to 100 billion barrels of oil.
    
    Shell has 15 blocks in Brazil including the Parque das Conchas and Bijupira and Salema fields that are already in production.
    
    Earlier this year it signed a binding agreement with ethanol company Cosan that will create Brazil's No. 3 fuel distributor with estimated annual sales of $21 billion that will also explore international ethanol and sugar opportunities.

    AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Royal Dutch Shell plc Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Voser stelt dat aardgas een belangrijke rol in de toekomstige wereldwijde energievoorziening gaat spelen, op voorwaarde dat het energiebeleid wereldwijd toestaat dat aardgas een toenemend deel van de vraag inneemt.
    
    "Als we aardgas de ruimte geven om te groeien, zal dat een positieve uitwerking hebben op de mondiale energievoorziening", zei Voser maandag op het World Energy Congress in Montreal.
    
    De winning van aardgas is drastisch veranderd sinds Noord-Amerikaanse bedrijven hebben ontdekt hoe er op een winstgevende manier onconventioneel aardgas kan worden gewonnen. Het gaat dan om aardgas dat uit stenen wordt gewonnen.
    
    Voser zegt dat er nu genoeg gas is om op de huidige niveaus nog 250 jaar te produceren. Shells CEO stelt dat de vraag naar aardgas "gelijke tred zal houden met de voorraden" door de economische groei in opkomende markten.
    
    Shell meent dat de vraag met 50% kan groeien tot 2030. Dat is twee keer zo snel als de verwachtte toename van de vraag naar olie.
    
    Voser doet zijn uitspraken op het moment dat de onverwachte opkomst van onconventioneel aardgas investeringsplannen van energiebedrijven doorkruist. Tot voor kort werd gedacht dat vloeibaar aardgas een centrale rol zou gaan spelen in de handel en dat Noord-Amerika een belangrijke consument van vloeibaar aardgas zou worden. Voser zegt nu dat Noord-Amerika in de nabije toekomst geen behoefte zal hebben aan een gestage stroom vloeibaar aardgas. West-Europa en Azie zullen daarentegen twee drijvende krachten zijn achter de vraag naar vloeibaar aardgas, aldus de bestuurder.
    
    Dat deze twee regio's drijvende krachten zullen zijn, komt doordat de productie van onconventioneel aardgas in Europa niet voor 2020 zal beginnen en door de snelle groei van de vraag naar aardgas in China en andere opkomende economieen.
    
    Voser erkende dat het afgelopen jaar is aangetoond dat er dingen mis kunnen gaan bij de winning van onconventioneel gas. Het gas dat Shell aanboort, ligt diep onder waterbronnen en Shell bedekt zijn putten met staal en beton ter bescherming.
    
    Voser stelt dat overheden een rol kunnen spelen bij het stimuleren van de vraag naar aardgas. Daarbij wees hij onder meer op wetgeving met betrekking tot de uitstoot van koolstof. Ook gaf hij aan dat overheden de energiesector moeten steunen bij het opslaan van koolstoffen. Opslag van koolstoffen is relatief duur.

    Shell oil sands expansion now on-stream
    
    Shell, as operator of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP), today announced the successful start of production of a 100,000 barrels per day expansion of its oil sands operations in Canada. The new Jackpine Mine will combine with existing production from the Muskeg River Mine to feed the Scotford Upgrader, which processes the oil sands bitumen – heavy oil – for refined oil products. Construction for an expansion of the Scotford Upgrader is underway, and will come on-stream in 2011.
    
    “The Jackpine Mine is a tremendous addition to our oil sands portfolio,” said Marvin Odum, Shell Upstream Americas Director and President of Shell Oil Company.
    
    The Jackpine Mine adds capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) per day to the existing Muskeg River Mine capacity of 155,000 boe per day. Once the Upgrader expansion is online early next year production will rise towards capacity over 2011.
    
    This AOSP expansion is one of a sequence of major projects that should raise Shell’s global oil & gas production by 11% over the 2009 - 2012 period.
    
    The construction of the Jackpine Mine in northern Alberta took around five years, with more than 6,500 employees and contractors involved on site at its peak. With some 255,000 barrels per day of capacity now in hand, next steps will include the efficiency improvements that can come from integrating and operating these assets together, with incremental growth potential from debottlenecking investment.
    
    Odum continued: “Canada’s oil sands are an important source of energy in a world with increasing energy needs. Shell is committed to developing this resource responsibly and to pursuing opportunities to reduce the impacts of our oil sands operations. To reduce the CO2 footprint of our oil sands operations, we are continuing to advance our proposed carbon capture and storage project, Quest, which could capture and store underground some 1 million tonnes of CO2 per year from the Scotford Upgrader.”
    
    Shell Canada Energy is 60% owner and operator of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) along with Chevron Canada Limited (20%) and Marathon Oil Corporation (20%). AOSP includes the Muskeg River Mine, Jackpine Mine and Scotford Upgrader.
    
    Jackpine Mine fast facts
    
    Adds 100,000 boe/d total capacity and brings AOSP total capacity to 255,000 boe/d.
    More than 650 Engineers based in Calgary designed the facilities.
    More than 34,000 different people worked at the construction site over the nearly five years of construction, amounting to some 30 million man-hours.
    Over the course of construction the skilled professionals who worked on the project included:
    o 3,500 electricians
    o 1,700 ironworkers
    o 2,000 pipefitters
    o 1,200 welders
    Apprentices made up over 40% of the workforce, which helps to build local skills.
    Some 30% of the workforce was female.
    Around 300 contracts were awarded.
    To support the expansion, an onsite 2,500-person hotel-style accommodation was constructed to reduce traffic and other demands on local services, in addition to attracting and retaining skilled workers to the project.
    An adjacent airstrip to transport workers, equipment and supplies opened in November 2007.
    Commodities used included:
    o ~ 70,000 cubic metres concrete,
    o ~ 30,000 tonnes steel,
    o ~ 190,000 metres pipe,
    o ~ 2.5 million metres cable.

    Shell breidt productie teerzanden Canada uit

    DEN HAAG (AFN) - Olieconcern Shell heeft de productie van olie uit teerzanden in Canada uitgebreid. Het concern maakte woensdag bekend dat de twee mijnen die zijn ontwikkeld dagelijks maximaal 255.000 vaten olie kunnen leveren.
    
    Er is vijf jaar gewerkt aan de bouw van de nu geopende, tweede teerzandmijn, die dagelijks 100.000 vaten produceert. De komende tijd zullen nog efficiëncyverbeteringen worden aangebracht.
    
    Shell heeft een belang van 60 procent in dit zogenoemde Athabasca-project. De Amerikaanse olieconcerns Chevron en Marathon Oil nemen allebei voor 20 procent deel in het project.
