US hydrogen technology group Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) is interested in investments in large-scale projects in Romania, building on its recent track record of such initiatives in the European market.
The company’s intentions were announced on Thursday by CEO Andy Marsh during a meeting with Romanian prime minister Nicolae Ionel Ciuca. The meeting in Bucharest, also attended by the President of the Industry Committee of the European Parliament, aimed to discuss opportunities offered by Romania for the deployment of green hydrogen production capacity.
"Romania's energy potential offers a broad development perspective for companies that want to invest in one of the most dynamic economies in Central and Eastern Europe," Ciuca said.
New York-based Plug Power makes fuel cell systems, fuelling stations and electrolysers and also builds its own green hydrogen production plants. The company manufactures its hydrogen and fuel cell products in its home state -- at a 2.5-GW gigafactory in Rochester, Monroe County, and in Slingerlands, Albany County. Globally, it employs more than 4,000 people.
During the past few years, Plug Power has been expanding its foothold in the European market by securing major orders such as the 1-GW electrolyser supply deal from H2 Energy Europe for an offshore wind-powered hydrogen production project in Denmark. At the end of 2021, the US firm acquired Dutch energy transition and hydrogen solutions provider Frames Group and a year later unveiled plans for a 100-MW electrolyser at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium.
