(Amex: EGY), (the "Company") announced that for the first quarter of 2005 earnings were $7.3 million or $0.20 per basic share and $0.12 per diluted share. The Company sold 519,000 net barrels at an average price of $44.58 per barrel during the first quarter of 2005 compared to 265,000 barrels at an average price of $30.83 per barrel in the first quarter of 2004. The increased oil sales were due in part to timing differences associated with liftings from the Etame field and from the increase in production as a result of the ET-5H development well. Production was approximately 15,000 barrels of oil per day before opening the ET-5H well and production has been stable at approximately 19,000 barrels per day since December 2004.

   The club of people who say that oil is headed for US$100 (HK$780) a barrel is growing steadily.
   
   Are they right or is it just another of those outlandish financial predictions to be filed with the fanciful forecast in 1999 that the Dow Jones Industrial Average may reach 36,000 within five years?
   
   The price of oil has certainly been climbing. In New York, it rose to a peak of US$58 last month, from US$38 a barrel in May last year. It is now hovering near US$50. To some analysts, the market is taking a short pause for breath in what may be a bull run lasting a decade or more.
   
   At the bar of the US$100 Oil Club, you can certainly find some respectable company.
   
   Last week, Matthew Simmons, an energy adviser to US President George W Bush, said at a conference in Edinburgh that oil production was close to its peak, and the price may reach US$100 or more within three years, according to the Guardian newspaper.
   
   The same message was delivered in March. ``Simply to sustain the oil system and start to modernize what's becoming a very old system, you are going to have to have prices up somewhere in the triple digits per barrel or you don't create enough revenue to be plowed back to make the system work,'' Simmons, who heads Houston-based energy investment bank Simmons & Co said.
   
   At the end of March, Goldman Sachs Group caused a stir with a prediction that oil may reach US$105 in the next few years. Its previous upper limit was US$80.
   
   A similarly bullish view has been pushed by Jeffrey Rubin, chief economist at Toronto-based CIBC World Markets. ``We calculated the market clearing price that will align future demand with supply,'' he said. ``Those prices are US$61 for 2006, US$70 for 2007, and ultimately US$101 for 2010.''
   
   Shock predictions are a feature of any bull market - and oil is no exception. Many of them end up leaving their authors looking foolish. Jim Glassman and Kevin Hassett's 1999 book Dow 36,000: The New Strategy for Profiting From the Coming Rise in the Stock Market probably is not being rushed into a fresh edition. And Henry Blodget, the former star Internet analyst, may regret his 1998 prediction that Amazon.com shares would reach US$400 within a year. They are now trading at about US$33.
   
   Yet that does not mean the predictions were worthless. They asked a serious question: Are we at the foot of a rising curve?
   
   In any bull market, people get carried away. Lots of predictions are made and almost everyone hops on the bandwagon. Traders like nothing more than a buying frenzy. When they see what looks like a one-way bet, they want to be on the right side of it.
   
   Evidence of that can be seen in the rush of oil-prospecting companies selling shares in London right now. Gulfsands Petroleum, Monitor Oil and Gasol have all been busy with listings. The predictions of a continually soaring oil price may well be part of the same frothy bull market. Indeed, it might not be long before some bright spark decides to make a splash with an outlook of US$200 a barrel. In the forecasting business, you have to keep pushing higher to hold your audience.
   
   Against that, the bears who attribute the oil price increase to hedge-fund speculation and demand from China are sounding slightly hollow. The market has been rising for more than a year.
   
   That is hardly just a blip. The price of anything will rise until it either becomes so expensive that people stop buying so much, or else more supply comes on stream. That point has yet to arrive in the oil market. ``Based on what we've seen to date, there hasn't yet been much of a substitution response from consumers,'' CIBC's Rubin said. ``For example, you would be hard-pressed to see the jump in oil prices from American gasoline consumption over the last 12 months.''
   
   The bulls may be right. This surge looks very different from the oil shocks of the 1970s, which were driven by a politically motivated reduction in supply. Now the market is driven by a supply-demand imbalance. And we have little certainty about oil availability. We may already have passed peak production - unless there is a lot that we don't know about.
   
   If nothing else, the US$100 Oil Club is fighting complacency. It is pushing traders into thinking about whether the oil wells are running dry, and what the long-term consequences of that might be. Oil may never reach US$100, yet the club is reviving the debate on a global economy with finite resources.

   NEW YORK, June 5 (Reuters) - Think $55 a barrel oil is bad? Wait till a hurricane knocks out a U.S. pipeline and a port at the same time that militants are killing hostages in Saudi Arabia, sending oil prices to more than $150 a barrel.
   
   That's the premise of "Oil Storm", a television docudrama set to premiere in the United States on Sunday. The movie uses exaggerated real-life events and fictional characters to examine America's dependence on oil and the havoc a major disruption in supply could wreak on ordinary people.
   
   The movie depicts -- albeit in the extreme -- what energy markets have spent much of the past year fretting about: hurricanes that can rip apart oil infrastructure and war and turbulence in the Middle East, which have driven crude prices to record highs.
   
   And the writers aim to show why the intricacies of oil rigs and oil reserves should be as much a concern for average Americans, with their taste for gas-guzzling SUVs and summer road trips, as they are for traders at the New York Mercantile Exchange.
   
   "Everything is so interconnected that anything that happens in Saudi Arabia or China will have an impact on oil, and therefore an impact on you or I in terms of what happens at the pump," said Caroline Levy, its British producer and co-writer.
   
   Levy is well aware that the movie could be criticized for fanning fears of a doomsday scenario, similar to last year's Hollywood blockbuster "The Day After Tomorrow", in which New York was flooded by a tidal wave before being frozen solid, in a series of events that defied the laws of physics.
   
   Few specialists expect a chain of events to occur any time soon that would lead to oil at $150 a barrel, although investment bank Goldman Sachs did send shockwaves into the market in March when it warned oil prices could hit $105 a barrel under a "super-spike" scenario.
   
   "None of what we're saying is so out of the realms of belief," Levy said, adding the movie was based on numerous interviews with energy experts and only a slight exaggeration of past events. "The purpose is to show how vulnerable the infrastructure of the oil industry in America is."
   
   In the movie, which will air on Fox's FX network, a powerful hurricane reminiscent of last year's Ivan smashes into Port Fourchon, Louisiana, cutting off a majority of the nation's oil imports and crippling production in the Gulf of Mexico.
   
   The U.S. administration turns to its ally and top world exporter Saudi Arabia, which boosts supplies, but then is forced to deal with an unfolding crisis of its own, involving "Shoot first, ask questions later" security forces and hostages.
   
   The movie depicts panic spreading across oil markets, sending oil prices above $150 a barrel, while cars across the United States line up outside gas stations, and everyone's lives are thrown into disarray.
   
   "At the end of the movie, prices go back to pretty much what they were at the start of the year," Levy said. "But the film is basically saying 'What we can we learn from this?'"

    NEW YORK (Reuters) - How long stocks can rise in the face of record high oil prices will be the burning question for investors this week.
    
    
    Oil will not have trouble commanding attention in a week when the economic calendar is relatively light on data. Only a few companies will report earnings, while others will start to tell Wall Street what to expect from second-quarter results.
    
    Last week, commodity-related shares pushed up the major stock indexes as crude gained four days out of five and closed at a record high above $58 on Friday. Steeper oil prices usually drive stocks down on concern that they will eat away at consumers' discretionary income and crimp corporate profits.
    
    "We've had a pretty big run in oil prices and it hasn't seemed to have any impact," said Alfred Kugel, chief investment officer at Atlantic Trust/Stein Roe in Chicago. "The market is not marching to that drummer."
    
    For the week, the blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.05 percent, the broad Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^SPX - news) gained 1.57 percent, and the tech-laced Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC - news) advanced 1.31 percent.
    
    By Friday's close, the S&P 500 also had pushed back up into positive territory for the year.
    
    Crude oil for July delivery settled on Friday at a record $58.47 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on concern about a terrorist threat that closed the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, an OPEC member. Earlier in the session, July crude set a fresh intraday record of $58.60, the highest price since oil futures began trading on NYMEX in 1983.
    
    OIL AT $60 ... OUCH
    
    "We need to have oil come off a bit for the market to keep moving" higher, said Todd Leone, head of listed trading at S.G. Cowen in New York. "Once we start getting closer to $60 a barrel, it definitely hurts the economy -- it gets a little inflationary."
    
    Higher oil prices may give the Federal Reserve reason to end its cycle of interest-rate increases by the end of this summer, said Joe Keating, chief investment officer of the Asset Management Group at AmSouth Bank in Birmingham, Alabama.
    
    Since last June, the Fed has raised its benchmark fed funds rate by a quarter-percentage point eight straight times to 3 percent from a historic low of 1 percent. The Fed's rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee next meets on June 29-30.
    
    "One hunch is that the Fed will be done raising rates after the August meeting, and once the market believes they are really close, that's when we can really get into positive territory," said Keating, who helps manage $16.5 billion.
    
    Traders expect the Fed to raise the fed-funds rate another quarter percentage point at the June meeting and again in August, interest-rate futures contracts show.
    
    SPRINKLING OF DATA AND EARNINGS
    
    Investors will have to wait until Friday for any potentially market-moving economic data when the Commerce Department reports new orders for long-lasting U.S.-made goods.
    
    Economists forecast a 1.0 percent rise in durable goods orders in May, and excluding transportation items, a 0.5 percent gain, according to a Reuters survey.
    
    Existing home sales for May will be released on Thursday, followed by new home sales on Friday. These indicators reflect demand for housing and speculation in the real estate market. So far this year, demand for homes has stayed strong because U.S. mortgage rates remain low.
    
    The forecast calls for May sales of existing homes to rise to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 7.12 million units from April's rate of 7.18 million units, according to a Reuters poll of economists.
    
    New home sales in May are expected to have risen to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1.323 million units from April's rate of 1.316 million units, the Reuters poll showed.
    
    Among the handful of companies reporting earnings are Cincinnati-based grocer Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR - news) and investment bank Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MWD - news), whose stock finished the week up 3 percent after CEO Philip Purcell announced his retirement on Monday.
    
    Investors may take note of FedEx Corp.'s (NYSE:FDX - news) earnings on Thursday as a gauge of national business activity.
    
    "A lot of us look at the amount of shipping that's going on as a pretty good pulse of the overall economic environment," said John Caldwell, chief investment strategist at McDonald Financial Group, a Cleveland company that manages $30 billion. "If you're making stuff, you have to send it somewhere."
    
    If company forecasts before the quarterly earnings season turn negative, "that could erase the positive trends pretty quickly," Caldwell said. "We all know that earnings growth is slowing. We're not going to grow earnings at 20 percent like last year."

    De olieconsumptie groeide van 2,25 miljoen vaten/dag in 1990 tot 4,88 miljoen in 2001, een jaarlijkse stijging van 7,3 %. Het gaat vooral om de zuidelijke kustgebieden zoals Guangdong, Zhejiang en Fujian en de oostelijke regio met grote steden zoals Peking. Sedert 1991 is de eigen olieproductie jaarlijks maar met een bescheiden 1,6 % gestegen. Dit is voornamelijk te wijten aan het feit dat de traditionele olievelden zoals Daqing over hun hoogtepunt heen zijn en dat steeds meer water meekomt, wat het kostelijker maakt om tot een gelijke productie te komen. Er wordt uitgekeken naar de productie van de velden in Xinjiang maar deze lagen zijn eerder klein tot middelgroot en zitten tot 6000 meter onder de grond. Voeg daarbij nog de nodige dure pijpleidingen om deze olie uit het westen te transporteren. Energieagentschappen voorspellen dat China zijn productie licht zal kunnen verhogen tot 170 miljoen ton jaarlijks, maar dat de behoefte zal stijgen tot 300 miljoen ton.

    Gezien de almaar groeiende behoefte betekent dit dat het land in de toekomst steeds meer petroleum zal moeten invoeren. In 2001 was dit 60 miljoen ton waarvan meer dan de helft uit het Midden-Oosten kwam. China gaat resoluut vreemd en werkt reeds samen met Argentinië, Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesië, Kazakstan, Malaysië, Mexico, Mongolië, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua Nieuw Guinea, Peru, Rusland, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Venezuela en de Verenigde Staten. Meer dan 8 miljard US$ ging naar olieconcessies in Soedan, Venezuela, Irak en Kazakstan. De plannen met Kazakstan waren het grootst. Als China olie kan betrekken uit dit buurland betekent dit minder afhankelijkheid van bevoorrading uit het Midden-Oosten, die kwetsbaar is gezien deze allemaal door de straat van Malaga verscheept wordt. In juni '97 verwierf de CNPC 60 % van de belangen in een Kazakse maatschappij die 3 grote olievelden heeft in Noordwest Kazakstan. De CNPC slaagde er Texaco, Amoco en Ruslands Yujnimost te verslaan door de belofte van een bonus van 320 millioen US$ voor de Kazakse regering. In september '97 volgde een bisnummer doordat de CNPC Petronas, Unocal en Amoco versloeg in het verwerven van een controlebelang in Uzen, het tweede grootste Kazakse veld. Hier werd een bonus van 52 miljoen US$ betaald en een onmiddellijke investering van 400 miljoen US$ en 8 % van de winst voor de regering. Bij het bezoek in juni van president Hu aan Kazakstan werd bekend gemaakt dat na de afwerking van het eerste stuk van een pijplijn naar China nu ook het tweede deel zal worden aangevat.
    In mei werd eveneens bekend dat de Russische regering het licht op groen zet voor een 2.400 kilometer lange oliepijplijn van Siberië naar Daqing ten nadele van een vertakking naar Japan die later volgt. De lijn kost 1,7 miljard US$ en zou jaarlijks 20 miljoen en tegen 2010 30 miljoen ton petroleum transporteren van Angarsk naar Daqing. Als dit door de Russische feasibility-studie die het Chinees tegenover het Japans alternatief bestudeert, in september bevestigd wordt, zou dit zowat de halvering betekenen van de olie-afhankelijkheid uit het Midden-oosten tegen 2006. Opmerkelijk is ook dat drie buitenlandse oliegroten meer dan 1,5 miljard US$ hebben gespendeerd voor de beursgang van de Chinese vlaggenschepen in de hoop op contracten en op samenwerking die effectief met de tijd groter wordt. Shell is daarbij de eerste en grootste investeerder. Dit belet niet dat Shell en Exxon-Mobil van hun voorkooprecht hebben gebruik gemaakt om te verhinderen dat 2 Chinese groten een aandeel kochten van British Gas in een veld in de Kaspische zee. De Amerikaan Warren Buffett maakte dan weer van zijn kant bekend 520 miljoen US$ te investeren in CNPC-dochter PetroChina waarmee hij 13 % krijgt van de beursgenoteerde PetroChina-aandelen en 1,3 % van het totaal vermogen.
    De oorlog met Irak heeft in China nog het bewustzijn aangescherpt dat het land kwetsbaar wordt gezien zijn toenemende afhankelijkheid van buitenlandse olie. Nu reeds wordt een derde van de verbruikte olie geïmporteerd. De reeds bestaande plannen tot het aanleggen van een strategische oliereserve werden als nog dwingender aangevoeld. In een eerste fase wil China tegen 2005 een reserve aanleggen van 30 dagen netto import en voor 2010 moet dit groeien tot een reserve van 40 dagen.

    Wat doen de voorraden van de VS ertoe als de vraag vanuit China blijft knallen.

    Olie-oorlog met Unocal als inzet
    
    
    
    De laatste dagen circuleren geruchten in de markt als zou de grootste Chinese producent van olie en gas, CNOOC, een tegenbod uitbrengen op de aandelen van het Amerikaanse Unocal, waarop in april reeds een bod werd uitgebracht door het Amerikaanse Chevron.
    
    Reeds op 7 juni kondigde CNOOC aan de strijd aan te gaan met Chevron om Unocal te verwerven.
    
    CNOOC is een onderdeel van de China National Offshore Oil Corp, die door de Chinese staat gecontroleerd wordt. Unocal is het achtste grootste olieconcern van de Verenigde Staten en haar belangrijkste bronnen liggen in Zuidoost-Azië. Unocal heeft ongeveer 1.75 miljard vaten aan bewezen oliereserves.
    
    Door de snelle industrialisering van landen als China en India wordt olie veel sneller schaars dan voorheen. De geruchten zijn dat CNOOC een cashbod zou uitbrengen van 20 miljard USD. Het mogelijk bod wordt gewaardeerd op ongeveer 71,5 USD per aandeel.
    
    De vraag is echter wat de rationaliteit is van dergelijk bod, wetende dat CNOOC de schuldpositie fors moet verhogen door een cashbod uit te brengen.
    
    Een dergelijk bod moet echter goedgekeurd worden door de toezichthoudende autoriteiten in de Verenigde Staten die zich zorgen zouden kunnen maken over de verhuis van oliereserves naar China.
    
    Twee Republikeinse Afgevaardigden lieten president Bush in een brief reeds weten het mogelijk bod grondig te laten onderzoeken en mogelijk proberen tegen te houden.
    
    Als het CNOOC-bod er al zou komen mogen we ons aan een pittige discussie verwachten alvorens de deal kan goedgekeurd worden. Dergelijke biedoorlog wijst nog maar eens op het belang dat gehecht wordt aan het verhogen van de oliereserves door oliebedrijven.

    Of de olieprijs nu zal corrigeren naar 54.5 zoals GJ Nikken op zijn TA ziet of niet, dat zullen we moeten afwachten.
    
    De vraag die ik mij eerder stel is, hoe snel gaan we door de 60$ heen knallen.
    
    In de oliesector is duidelijk een zoektocht naar olievoorraden aan de gang, de Chinezen zoals CNOOC zijn bereid te betalen wat moet om toch maar hun olievoorraden te kunnen vergroten.
    
    Mijn gevoel zegt dat we nu nog in oliebedrijven kunnen springen, dat ze even kunnen corrigeren is goed meegenomen, maar zorg dat je ermee in zit.

    Technisch gezien is het nu niet zo'n goed instapmoment voor olie. Ik blijf er nu dat ook van af. Als we over ong 2 maanden weer aan de onderkant van het trendkanaal zijn aanbeland hap ik toe.
