   GAITHERSBURG, Md., Aug. 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Novavax, Inc. (Nasdaq: NVAX), a biotechnology company developing next-generation vaccines for serious infectious diseases, today announced that it has reached an agreement with the European Commission (EC) for the purchase of up to 200 million doses of NVX-CoV2373, the company's recombinant nanoparticle protein-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate with Matrix-M™ adjuvant. The agreement covers the purchase of up to 100 million doses of the vaccine with the option for an additional 100 million doses through 2023.
   
   Novavax is working to complete its rolling submission for NVX-CoV2373 to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in the third quarter of 2021, with delivery of initial doses expected to begin following approval.
   
   "We thank the European Commission for their partnership in this important step to expand vaccine options for the citizens of Europe and globally as we work to bring the first COVID-19 protein subunit vaccine to the market," said Stanley C.    In a Phase 3 clinical trial with nearly 30,000 adults in the United States and Mexico, NVX-CoV2373 demonstrated 100% protection against moderate and severe disease and 90.4% overall efficacy. In a Phase 3 clinical trial conducted in the United Kingdom with approximately 15,000 adults, NVX-CoV2373 showed an overall efficacy of 89.7%, and more than 96% efficacy against the original strain of the virus.
   
   "As new coronavirus variants are spreading in Europe and around the world, this new contract with a company that is already testing its vaccine successfully against these variants is an additional safeguard for the protection of our population.    Moderna behaalt meer winst dan verwacht
   Dankzij verkoop coronavaccin.
   
   (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Moderna heeft in het tweede kwartaal van 2021 meer winst geboekt dan verwacht. Dit bleek donderdag uit de cijfers van het Amerikaanse biotechbedrijf.
   
   De nettowinst bedroeg afgelopen kwartaal 2,78 miljard dollar, ofwel 6,46 dollar per aandeel. Een jaar geleden boekte Moderna nog een verlies van 117 miljoen dollar.
   
   De consensus samengesteld door FactSet had op een winst van 4,96 dollar per aandeel gerekend.
   
   De omzet steeg dan ook aanzienlijk, van 67 miljoen naar 4,35 miljard dollar. Ook dat is beter dan verwacht. Analisten hadden gemiddeld gerekend op 4,21 miljard dollar aan omzet.
   
   Deze stijgende resultaten werden volgens het bedrijf geboekt dankzij de verkoop van de 199 miljoen coronavaccins die het bedrijf ontwikkelde. In de eerste jaarhelft verkocht Moderna 302 miljoen doses van het vaccin.
   
   Outlook
   
   Voor 2021 heeft Moderna leveringsafspraken liggen die omgerekend 20 miljard dollar waard zijn. In mei was dit nog 19,2 miljard dollar.
   
   Voor levering in 2022 heeft Moderna al contracten liggen voor omgerekend 12 miljard dollar, met opties voor nog eens 8 miljard dollar.
   
   Verder rekent Moderna op een verhoging van de vaccinproductie, van 800 miljoen tot 1 miljard stuks in 2021 naar 2 tot 3 miljard coronavaccins in 2022.
   
   Het aandeel Moderna lijkt 2,6 procent lager te gaan openen.

   Het Duitse biotechbedrijf rekent op 15,9 miljard euro omzet uit zijn samen met Pfizer ontwikkelde coronavaccin.
   Dat is een pak meer dan de prognose van 12,4 miljard.
   
   BioNTech BioNTech SE American Depositar0,00% en Pfizer PFE0,00% ondertekenden onlangs contracten om dit jaar zo'n 2,2 miljard doses van het vaccin, waarvoor twee prikken nodig zijn, te leveren.
   De komende jaren gaat het zeker om telkens 1 miljard doses.
   Bovendien verwachten de partners volgend jaar voldoende capaciteit te hebben om 4 miljard doses te produceren, aldus BioNTech.
   
   Het coronavaccin is goed op weg het best verkopende medicijn aller tijden te worden.
   De levering is uitgebreid naar meer dan honderd landen en regio's, zei BioNTech-topman Ugur Sahin in een verklaring bij het halfjaarrapport. Pfizer gaf eerder aan dit jaar 33,5 miljard dollar (28,8 miljard euro) aan opbrengsten te verwachten.
   Dat geld wordt verdeeld tussen de partners. BioNTech heeft daarnaast nog wat inkomsten uit directe verkoop.
   
   De meevaller geeft de Duitse onderneming voldoende geld voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe vaccins. Wereldwijd groeit de hoop dat de veelzijdige mRNA-technologie ook andere doorbraken oplevert, voor ziektes van griep tot malaria.

   BioNTech wil mRNA ook inzetten tegen kanker. Klinische tests naar experimentele kankertherapieën zijn al gestart.
   In de komende jaren worden mogelijk meer producten op basis van mRNA geïntroduceerd.
   Wereldwijd zijn er nog heel veel landen waar grote delen van de bevolking nog niet zijn gevaccineerd.
   Daarnaast kunnen de verkopen van het vaccin een impuls krijgen vanwege de potentiële behoefte aan boostershots bij mensen die al volledig zijn gevaccineerd.

    Novavax is looking to position its vaccine as the primary booster vaccine from 2022 onwards
    
    Biotech company Novavax has announced it will be initially prioritizing regulatory submissions for its promising COVID-19 vaccine in countries with urgent needs such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines. The long-anticipated vaccine is also being trialed as a third booster in people initially administered other vaccines.
    
    Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine is what's known as a protein subunit vaccine. Currently available COVID-19 vaccines are designed to coax cells into producing a part of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which then trigger the immune system to recognize it. Novavax’s candidate is a little different. It directly delivers lab-grown coronavirus spike proteins into the body in the form of nanoparticles created to mimic the structure of the virus.
    
    So far, Phase 3 trials have demonstrated incredibly promising efficacy, but the company has been facing some challenging manufacturing hurdles. Most recently the company revealed its manufacturing facilities in the United States were struggling to pass the US Food and Drug Administration’s regulatory requirements, delaying its local approval until the end of 2021.
    
    A recent announcement from Novavax reveals it is moving forward with manufacturing in India as part of a massive production deal with the Serum Institute of India. Regulatory submissions have now reportedly been filed with India, Indonesia and the Philippines.
    
    The plan is to soon sort regulatory approval with the World Health Organization in order to allow low-income countries to access the vaccine. Over one billion doses are promised to these regions through a WHO scheme named COVAX.
    
    "Today's submission of our recombinant nanoparticle COVID-19 vaccine, the first protein-based option filed with any regulatory agency, represents a major milestone in Novavax's transformation into a commercial global vaccine company," says Novavax CEO Stanley Erck. "This important step toward access to millions of doses of a safe and effective vaccine for countries with an urgent need to control the pandemic was made possible through our strategic partnership with Serum Institute of India, and it demonstrates the power of global collaboration."
    
    With current vaccine supplies not a problem in countries such as the US, it is unsurprising Novavax is shifting its current focus toward those parts of the world in great immediate need. Looking forward to 2022, Novavax is positioning its vaccine to be the booster of choice for countries with populations initially immunized with other vaccines.
    
    Early data from an ongoing booster study indicate very effective antibody responses are generated by a third dose against new virus variants such as Delta. While that data is from trials investigating individuals vaccinated solely with Novavax’s candidate, a large mix-and-match booster trial in the United Kingdom is set to deliver valuable insights into the efficacy of different vaccines given as a third dose.
    
    The study is called COV-Boost, and it's studying immune responses in people given a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at least three months after initial vaccination with either Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines.
    
    Almost 3,000 subjects have been recruited for the booster study, with each participant randomly administered a booster of one of seven different COVID-19 vaccines. Initial data will evaluate immune biomarkers such as antibody responses, but subjects will be followed for a year, with subsequent infection data collected over the longer follow-up.
    
    No data has been officially released from the COV-Boost trial so far, but Erck has suggested Novavax’s vaccine is being positioned as the, “universal booster of choice and the preferred vaccine for annual re-vaccination.”

    BioNTech ziet omzet exploderen dankzij coronavaccin
    
    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) BioNTech heeft in het tweede kwartaal van 2021 aanzienlijk meer omzet weten te boeken dan een jaar eerder. Dit bleek maandag uit de cijfers van het biotechedrijf.
    De omzet bedroeg 5,3 miljard euro in het tweede kwartaal van 2021, tegenover slechts 42 miljoen euro een jaar eerder.
    
    Daarmee kwam de omzet over de eerste zes maanden van het jaar op bijna 7,4 miljard euro uit.
    Deze omzetgroei is volgens het biotechbedrijf te danken aan de verkoop van het coronavaccin dat BioNTech samen Pfizer op de markt bracht.
    Inmiddels zijn er meer dan 1 miljard doses van BNT162b2 verstrekt aan meer dan 100 landen en zijn er contracten voor nog eens 2,2 miljard vaccins getekend.
    Dankzij deze enorme omzetgroei ging het kwartaalresultaat op jaarbasis van een verlies van 90,5 miljoen euro naar een winst van maar liefst 2,8 miljard euro. Na zes maanden stond de winstteller zelfs op 3,9 miljard euro.
    
    Eind juni had BioNTech nog 914,1 miljoen euro in kas.
    
    Outlook
    BioNTech rekent voor 2021 op een omzet van ongeveer 15,9 miljard euro.

    Nieuwe Amerikaanse onderzoeksgegevens suggereren dat de mRNA-vaccins van Pfizer en Moderna mogelijk minder effectief zijn tegen het nieuwe delta-virus.
    
    Het Europees Geneesmiddelenbureau zei bovendien woensdag dat het is begonnen met het beoordelen van rapporten over aandoeningen die verband houden met de huid en de nieren na vaccinaties met Comirnaty, een middel ontwikkeld door Pfizer en BioNTech, en van Spikevax, het product van Moderna.
    
    Analisten van Bank of America werden daarnaast negatief over specifiek Moderna, maar dat betreft het verdienmodel. De huidige marktwaarde van bijna $ 200 miljard voor het bedrijf is „onmogelijk te rechtvaardigen”, aldus de analist.
    
    Het aandeel van Moderna steeg maandag met 17% tot een recordhoogte, nadat het coronavaccin werd goedgekeurd voor gebruik in Australië en Zwitserland, voor jongeren van 12 tot 17 jaar. De waardering van Moderna steeg naar $200 miljard.
    
    Bij een koers van $385 per aandeel ging er woensdag $100 af in een enkele dag.
    
    ’Wakeup call’
    
    Volgens de nieuwste Amerikaanse studie met data van januari tot en met juli zou het Pfizer-vaccin slechts 42% effectief zijn geweest tegen deze delta-infectie. In de woorden van een ambtenaar van president Biden is dit ’een wake-up call’, zo zei hij tegen persbureau Axios. In juli raakte de deltavariant op stoom, toen verloren de vaccins daartegen hun effectiviteit, aldus het onderzoek.
    
    Over het algemeen, ook voor andere infecties, bleek het Moderna-vaccin voor 86% effectief, en die effectiviteit voor al deze infecties was bij Pfizer 76%.
    
    Experts vragen nu snel om meer data. De laatste studie zou in ieder geval meer twijfel oproepen over de langetermijneffectiviteit van beide vaccins, in het bijzonder van Pfizer.

    Initieel openden de Amerikaanse indices lager, maar al snel werd het verlies omgedraaid naar winst. Zoals gisteren vermeld, moeten we de reden zoeken bij de zwakke Chinese data die werd gepubliceerd. Dit zorgt voor vraagtekens rond het mondiale economisch herstel. Het waren voornamelijk de aandelen uit de gezondheidssector en de nutsbedrijven die het intraday herstel aanvuurden.
    
    De brede S&P 500 steeg 0,26% tot 4.480 punten. De aandelenindex is nu meer dan verdubbeld ten opzichte van de COVID-19 dip. De S&P daalde richting 2.188 punten en schittert nu op 4.480 punten. De technologiebeurs Nasdaq 100 bleef quasi status quo met een dagresultaat van plus 0,03 % ofwel 15.140 punten. De oudste Amerikaanse aandelenindex, Dow Jones Industrial Average, lapte er 0,31 % bij. De slotkoers lag op 35.625 punten. De VIX-index steeg gisteren meer dan 4 %. Dit is niet zeer hoog voor de angstgraadmeter, maar geeft wel een signaal dat er wel eens volatiliteit in de S&P 500 om de hoek kan loeren. Dit vinden we ook terug door middel van de CBOE Crude Oil Volatility Index (OVX) te vergelijken met de VIX-index. In de meeste gevallen verlopen beide vrij gelijklopend. Hieronder vindt u beide indices geplot. De volatiliteitsindex van olie lijkt een weg hoger te zoeken, wat kan leiden tot een hogere VIX-index met als resultaat een lagere S&P 500 koers.

    Pfizer en BioNTech hebben nieuwe data aangeleverd bij de Amerikaanse regulators, waaruit blijkt dat een derde vaccin tot hogere beschermende antilichamen leidt, wanneer het acht tot negen maanden na het eerste vaccin wordt toegediend. Het aandeel Pfizer steeg gisteren 0,89 % tot $ 48,91. Dit is een nieuwe recordkoers voor Pfizer. De vaccins brengen heel wat geld in het laatje en indien de rijke landen zouden beslissen dat er een derde shot nodig zou zijn, zal dit op economisch vlak enkel meer winst betekenen voor de vaccinproducenten zoals Pfizer. Het aandeel BioNTech daalde gisteren 9,07 %. Ook de andere vaccinproducenten Moderna en Novavax gingen respectievelijk 4,08 % en 10,87 % lager. Zoals blijkt is een hogere volatiliteit inherent aan aandelen van big pharma. Volgens de Washingtonpost zal de Amerikaanse overheid kortelings aankondigen te starten met het derde shot. Dit kan terug voor heel wat volatiliteit zorgen bij de bovenstaande aandelen.

    Waarom ze een bond van 1 mlrd in de markt zetten terwijl ze meer dan 20mlrd in cash hebben staan en dit jaar ca 20 mlrd dollar netto (4 p/a) gaan verdienen is mij een raadsel. En ja, ik heb de aandelen nog in bezit maar ben toch wat gaan schuiven van Moderna naar Pfizer. De laatste noteert nog geen 13 keer de winst, met de as goedkeuring van het vaccin (begin sept) en de geaccepteerde boostershots lijkt Pfizer spotgoedkoop.

    Boosters are coming
    
    The Biden administration is set to announce as early as this week its policy regarding the need for COVID-19 booster shots for most Americans, according to the NYT. The plan is to offer a third jab, eight months after a second shot, which could happen as early as mid-to-late September. Boosters would initially be made available to nursing home residents and health care workers followed by older people who were at the front of the line when vaccinations started late last year.
    
    Another jab: With the new policy, the administration intends to let the recipients of Pfizer-BioNTech (PFE, BNTX) and Moderna (MRNA) vaccines know that they need further protection given rising coronavirus case counts across the nation. The officials expect that those who received the single-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) will also need an additional dose, but they are awaiting the results from a clinical study for the vaccine, which is anticipated later this month. The new policy is subject to the FDA authorization of additional COVID-19 shots for fully vaccinated individuals.
    
    Pfizer has already submitted early-stage data to the FDA to support the evaluation for a booster of its COVID-19 vaccine. According to the drugmaker's findings, a third dose elicited significantly higher neutralizing antibodies against the initial SARS-CoV-2 virus compared to the levels observed after the two-dose primary series, as well as against the Beta variant and the highly infectious Delta variant. Moderna has said it plans to ask regulators next month to authorize its related booster shots.
    
    Outlook: The FDA last week already approved the use of booster COVID-19 vaccines for people with compromised immune systems, who are likely to have weaker protection from the two-dose regimens. Meanwhile, the number of people dying with COVID-19 in American hospitals is hitting previous highs in some hotspot areas like Florida, Louisiana, Hawaii, Oregon and Mississippi. Many states are also looking to reinstate public health restrictions as the Delta variant strains hospital systems across the U.S. (56 comments)

    'Vaccins Pfizer en AstraZeneca na verloop van tijd minder effectief'

    De coronavaccins van BioNTech/Pfizer en Oxford/AstraZeneca worden minder effectief naarmate de tijd verstrijkt, maar blijven nog altijd voldoende werkzaam. Dat wijst een groot Brits onderzoek uit.
    
    De Universiteit van Oxford publiceerde donderdag een onderzoek waarin naar voren komt dat het vaccin van Pfizer vier maanden na de inenting bijna de helft minder werkzaam is. Ook voor het vaccin van AstraZeneca daalt de effectiviteit.
    
    Het vaccin van Pfizer biedt in eerste instantie betere bescherming tegen het virus dan de prik van AstraZeneca, tot 85% tegen infecties twee weken na de tweede injectie. Maar de effectiviteit daalt ook sneller naar 75% na 90 dagen. Ook de dekking van AstraZeneca-vaccin daalt tot 68% twee weken na de tweede prik. Na drie maanden is dat 61%.
    
    Volgens de onderzoekers, die tussen december en augustus 2,5 miljoen tests onder de loep namen, is de snelle verspreiding van de deltavariant debet aan de afname. Tegelijkertijd benadrukten ze dat de vaccins nog altijd een hoge bescherming bieden tegen het coronavirus.
    
    Boosters
    De afnemende effectiviteit en snelle verspreiding van de deltavariant zwengelde eerder al de discussie aan over een derde prik. Deze boosters zijn bedoeld om het immuunsysteem nog eens extra aan het werk te zetten.
    
    Duitsland en Frankrijk beginnen binnenkort aan een nieuwe vaccinatieronde voor ouderen en kwetsbaren, ondanks de oproep van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) om eerst armere landen te laten vaccineren. In de landen met de laagste inkomens had volgens de WHO eerder deze maand slechts 1,1% van de bevolking één of meerdere prikken gekregen.

    A rise in vaccinated people becoming infected with coronavirus has cast doubt over the lasting efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines, according to new studies, including one that found protection gained from the BioNTech/Pfizer shot declined more rapidly than that from the AstraZeneca jab.
    
    An Oxford university study published on Thursday found that the efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine against symptomatic infection almost halved after four months, and that vaccinated people infected with the more infectious Delta variant had as high viral loads as the unvaccinated.
    
    Two research papers from the US and Qatar have also fuelled debate over the need for top-up booster shots as they found higher numbers of “breakthrough infections” than anticipated, even though protection against serious cases of the virus appears to hold.
    
    Natalie Dean, a biostatistics professor at Emory University, said the spread of the Delta variant had made it “a lot harder” to stop transmission.
    
    “The situation has changed with respect to how far we think vaccines can take us,” she said. “We’ve been brought back to a more modest — but still critical — goal: to prevent severe disease, hospitalisations and deaths.”
