   Vestas has won a 51 MW order in China that includes supply of 23 V120-2.2 MW as well as a 2-year Active Output Management 4000 (AOM 4000) service agreement. Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2020, while commissioning is planned for the second quarter of 2020.

   Prysmian to Supply Cables for Dongfang Electric Offshore Wind Turbine Prototype
   
   Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract by Dongfang Electric Corporation. The contract includes the supply of cables for DEC’s newest 10 MW offshore wind turbine prototype that will be installed in China Three Gorges Corporation’s Xinghuawan wind farm in the Fujian province, China. Cables will be manufactured in the Group’s plant located in Tianjin, China.
   
   With a development period of over 10 years, the wind power market in China is now going through a phase of strategic transformation in which offshore is becoming more and more supported by the Chinese government. Therefore, larger capacity turbines are suitable and preferred for China’s Southern and Eastern coastal areas for greater efficiency and lower integrated costs.
   
   The new mega-turbine is the first of this type in Asia and is developed for the offshore wind areas along China’s southeast coast. It is a direct-drive permanent-magnet offshore turbine, able to resist 77 m/s typhoon winds and has a 185 m blade diameter. This turbine can generate 4 GWh of power each year (with 10 m/s wind), reducing coal consumption by 13,000 tons and carbon emissions by 3,500 tons.

   Van Oord and NYK Partnering in Offshore Wind Installation Vessels in Japan
   
   Van Oord and NYK have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly own and operate offshore wind installation vessels under the Japanese flag. The collaboration is using Van Oord’s technical and operational expertise in offshore wind and NYK Group’s knowledge of the Japanese market. The vessels will be used for the transport and installation of both the foundations and wind turbines for offshore wind farms. In addition to the collaboration for offshore installation vessels, NYK and Van Oord are also exploring opportunities to collaborate on other types of vessels required for the construction and operation of offshore wind farms.
   Japanese offshore wind market
   
   In response to the growing offshore wind market in Japan, a new law came into force in April 2019 that aims to facilitate the development of offshore wind projects in Japan. As a result, demand within the offshore wind market is expected to increase. Challenges for the development of offshore wind in Japan include the lack of resources (experienced workforce and specialised equipment required for the installation of the large foundations and turbines for offshore wind farms). By joining forces, NYK and Van Oord intend to meet these challenges and contribute to the successful development of offshore wind as a sustainable energy source for Japanese society.

   (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Vestas heeft een opdracht gekregen voor het leveren van 22 windturbines in China. Dit maakte de Deense producent van windturbines dinsdag bekend zonder financiële details te geven.
   
   De opdracht betreft 84 megawatt plus een onderhoudscontract.

   Construction for 48MW Near-Shore Wind Farm Commences in Vietnam
   
   Climate Fund Managers, the manager of the Climate Investor One facility, has announced that construction has commenced of the 48MW near-shore wind farm in Tra Vinh province in Vietnam. CI1’s Construction Equity Fund has committed USD 71 million to the project company, 'Tra Vinh Wind Power Company', which is jointly funded by Korean energy firm ST International. Vestas, the pioneering global supplier of wind turbines will act as EPC for the project.
   
   The Tra Vinh wind farm will assist Vietnam in meeting its rapidly growing energy demand, whilst supporting their ambition to move away from fossil fuel power in favour of renewable energy. The project is expected to avoid 68,600 tCO2 or equivalent annually, create 500 additional jobs, and serve over 132,500 people.

   Envision Energy Commissions 2 Wind Energy Projects in Gujarat
   
   Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Envision Energy said it has commissioned two wind power projects with a total capacity of 232.5 MW in Gujarat. The contracts involved a 197.5 MW wind power project for Actis-backed Sprng Energy and a 35 MW wind farm for ReNew Power which were awarded under tranche 1 of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam’s wind energy auctions.
   
   The projects were built on turnkey basis using state-of-the-art 2.5-MW wind turbines with 131 m rotor diameter and 120 m hub height.
   
   The company also plans to soon introduce 3 MW class wind turbines with rotor diameters larger than 140 m and hub heights up to 140 m, suiting Indian wind energy and site conditions.

   EDF Renewables and SITAC Group Commission 105MW Wind Farm in India
   
   EDF Renewables and its partner for wind power generation in India, the SITAC Group, are announcing the commissioning of the Verdant project, a new wind farm of 105 MW installed capacity in India. Located in the State of Gujarat, one of India’s windiest regions, the 105 MW Verdant wind farm is composed of 50 wind turbines. The development, financing and construction of the wind farm has been undertaken by SITAC Management & Development Pvt Ltd, the joint venture company of EDF Renewables and the SITAC Group dedicated to wind power development in India.
   
   The wind fam has entered into a 25-year power purchase agreement with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd, the Gujarat state’s utility, following their competitive tender in December 2017.

   Eurus Ishinomaki Wind Farm Opens in Miyagi Prefecture
   
   An opening ceremony for Eurus group’s first wind farm in Miyagi Prefecture, Eurus Ishinomaki Wind Farm, total output 20,4MW, has been held on January 24th in the city the attendance of local officials and construction officials. This wind farm, located on the ridge of Mt. Jyobon and Mt. Kagobo, in Ishinomaki city, comprises 6 Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy wind turbines, each rated at 3.4MW capacity, which is the largest in Japan in the country. All generated energy will be sold to Tohoku Electric Power Co., Ltd.
   
   Commercial operation has started from December last year. The power plant will supply electric power equivalent of about 10,000 households and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 19,000 tons annually.

   Turkish Wind Farm to Triple Generation Capacity with EBRD loan
   
   Turkey’s renewable energy production is receiving a boost with an EBRD loan of USD 37 million to finance the expansion of the Kiyikoy wind farm in the northwest of the country. The Bank’s loan will be used for the development, construction and operation of a 72 MW extension to the 28 MW wind farm located on the west coast of the Black Sea in the Kirklareli province. In parallel, ICBC Turkey is providing a loan for the same amount. The funds will also refinance a leasing facility provided by a local leasing firm for the original wind farm.
   
   The wind farm developer is Alenka Enerji Uretim ve Yatirim, set up by Borusan EnBW Enerji, a joint venture between the German utility Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) and the Turkish conglomerate Borusan Holding. The joint company manages a portfolio of renewable energy projects with a total generation capacity of 505 MW. This includes eight wind farms, two solar power plants and a hydropower plant.
   
   The extension of the Kiyikoy wind farm is a step towards the government’s objective of installing 27 GW of renewable energy capacity other than hydropower by 2023, of which 20 GW is expected to be wind energy. The Kiyikoy extension will also help save approximately 99,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

    Lekela’s Western Cape Wind Farm on Target for Operations by End-July 2020
    
    2020 promises to be an exciting year for Lekela’s Perdekraal East Wind Farm, South Africa, as it heads into its final six months of construction. The last of the 480 wind turbine components will reach the wind farm’s construction site early February 2020 and all 48 turbines are expected to be installed by early April 2020. A new 500MVA main power transformer will be installed during April 2020, with plans to energise the plant by 26 April. “Our construction team chose to construct, test and commission the works under a self-build agreement, based on the need for a compressed construction schedule and full control of all contractors, in order to minimise the timeframes and ensure that the project can achieve commercial operations on schedule,” added Hobson.
    
    Perdekraal East Wind Farm commenced construction during July 2018. 16 months later the wind farm is reported to be on time and on budget, having lifted almost 40 % of the 48 turbines and installed the main power transformer at the Distribution Substation.
    
    Additionally, all civil works have been completed and over 80% of turbine components have been delivered to site outside of Ceres, travelling from Atlantis and Saldahna on the West Coast.
    
    Construction halted on 13 December 2019 and will commence again this month for the final construction stretch. Once complete, Perdekraal East Wind Farm, situated within the Witzenberg Local Municipality, will be the Western Cape’s largest BW4 wind farm, and become Lekela’s fourth operating wind farm in South Africa.

    Egypt Starts Construction of 250 MW Lekela Wind Power Plant in Jabal al-Zeit
    
    Egypt’s Electricity Minister Mr Mohamed Shaker last week celebrated the start of construction on a new 250-megawatt wind power plant project in the Jabal al-Zeit area. The wind farm is being built in cooperation with Lekela Egypt.
    
    Lekela’s website notes the company’s West Bakr Wind project, which it says will produce 250MW of power. Situated in the Gulf of Suez, 30km north-west of Ras Ghareb, the project will provide power to the grid from 2021. The company says the project should increase Egypt’s wind energy capacity by 18%, a key part of meeting the state’s renewable energy target of 20% by 2022.

    Africa and Middle East add 894MW of Wind Energy Capacity in 2019
    
    The latest data released by the Global Wind Energy Council shows Africa and the Middle East installed 894MW capacity of wind power in 2019, a decrease of 7 per cent on the previous year which saw 962MW installed. However, faster growth is on the horizon with GWEC Market Intelligence’s preliminary forecasts expecting 10.7GW of wind energy capacity to be installed between 2020-2024, an increase of 167% on current market status.
    
    In 2019, the leading countries in the region for wind power capacity include:
    Egypt (262MW)
    Morocco (216 MW)
    Jordan (190MW)
    Ethiopia (120MW)
    
    Over the next five years, South Africa will be leading the growth trend in the region with an additional 3.3GW of wind energy capacity installed by 2024. This capacity will come from over 1.3GW of Bid Window 4 projects currently under construction as well further tenders in the context of the new Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019, which foresees the installation of 14.4GW of wind power capacity from 2022-2030 in the country.
    
    Considering other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the significant potential for wind energy remains clear, with the SADC region alone accounting for 18GW of wind energy potential in emerging markets such as Zambia, Tanzania, Namibia, and Mozambique.
    
    In North Africa and the Middle East, GWEC foresees a major acceleration in growth in the next few years as a maturing project pipeline will come into place in 2020 to support an increase in wind power capacity, with GWEC Market Intelligence preliminary forecasts showing that wind energy capacity will surge over the next five years in markets such as Egypt (1.8GW), Morocco (1.2GW) and Saudi Arabia (1.2GW).

    GWEC and JWPA to Drive Offshore Wind Growth in Japan
    
    Global Wind Energy Council and the Japan Wind Power Association have announced that they have formed a joint Japan Offshore Wind Task Force to drive offshore wind growth in Japan. As of December 2019, Japan has 65.6MW of offshore wind capacity, including five floating turbines totalling 19MW. However, the full scale of Japan’s offshore wind potential has yet to be unlocked due to regulatory and industrial bottlenecks, both of which this Task Force aims to address.
    
    The Japan Offshore Wind Task Force includes both local and global industry players and will engage regularly with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to share best practices, conduct studies and bring together all the most relevant stakeholders in order to build a thriving offshore wind market in Japan. The Task Force will be chaired by Jin Kato, President at JWPA, and Alastair Dutton, Chair of GWEC’s Global Offshore Wind Task Force.
    
    The first deliverable of the Task Force will be a cost reduction study to explore the long-term cost reduction potential of the industry in Japan. The study will be released in October 2020 at the Global Offshore Wind Summit – Japan, organised jointly by GWEC and JWPA.

    MHI Vestas Offshore Wind Inks Firm Orders for Taiwan Projects
    
    MHI Vestas and CIP have finalised commercial agreements for the Changfang and Xidao projects in Taiwan with a combined capacity of 589 MW. The orders represent MHI Vestas’ first projects in Asia Pacific to reach financial close and, together, will feature 62 of the company’s flagship V174-9.5 MW turbines. The projects, which reached financial close late last week, will be split out over several phases: Changfang Phase 1 will comprise 10 turbines for an installed capacity of 95 MW and will be installed in 2022. Changfang Phase 2, comprising 47 turbines with an installed capacity of 446.5 MW, and Xidao, comprising 5 turbines with an installed capacity of 47.5 MW, will be installed in 2023.
    
    Ahead of the projects, MHI Vestas and CIP have collaborated on a comprehensive local supply chain ramp-up that meets local content requirements. Once complete, the full localisation scope promises to create up to 5,300 jobs [1] and NT$9.2b (€264 million) in economic value for Taiwan in localised components alone [2], which does not include installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance for the lifetime of the turbines.

    GWEC Expands Global Team with hire of India Director Francis Jayasurya
    
    Francis Jayasurya, an experienced professional in the India’s wind energy sector, has joined the GWEC team as India Director to support the organisation’s activities in driving forward India’s wind energy market. Jayasurya has over 30 years’ experience in Corporate Affairs in leading multinational corporations in the power sector and has been active in the wind energy sector since 2007. Previously to his role at GWEC, Jayasurya was the Head of Communications at the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and Country Manager for India at WindSim AS. In both roles, he actively engaged with stakeholders and was involved in long-term strategy planning to open new business opportunities for the industry. He was also active in an academia skills development program using the Wind Resource Assessment CFD flow model.
    
    Jayasurya was also a Board member at the Norway Business Association of India, involved in promoting the wind energy sector to member countries.

    President of Senegal Inaugurates Wind Farm
    
    Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye was recently inaugurated by the Senegalese Head of State His Excellency Macky Sall. The project, carried out by Lekela, the renewable power generation company that delivers utility-scale projects across Africa, is a major achievement for Senelec, Senegal's national electricity company. Since last December, PETN has provided 50MW to the Senelec grid thanks to the installation of 16 wind turbines. These, among the largest in the world, each peak at almost 180 m in height, the equivalent of a 60-storey building. The upcoming second phase of construction will see PETN generate an additional 50MW. The third and final production phase will bring the number of turbines to 46 and provide Senelec with 158.7MW of clean energy.
    
    PETN will provide more than 450,000 MWh of electricity per year to more than two million people. This will help to avoid the release of 300,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The project is part of the “Plan Senegal Emergent”, the government's programme to accelerate economic development.
    
    As well as this milestone for PETN, Lekela also recently began construction on its 250MW West Bakr Wind project in Egypt. Expected to be fully operational by 2021, West Bakr will produce over 1,000 GWh per year of clean energy for the Egyptian grid. In total, Lekela now has over 1,000MW of wind power in operation or construction.

    Siemens Gamesa Introduces Renewable Energy in Djibouti
    
    Siemens Gamesa has sealed a contract to build the first renewable energy installation in the Republic of Djibouti. Despite high resource potential in Djibouti and opportunities for cross-border export, there are still 110,000 households in the country without access to power. With a capacity of 59 MW, this new wind farm will almost double the current installed power generation capacity in the country, all of which currently comes from fossil fuel sources. The new installation, part of an expanding national renewable energy development programme, will enable clean energy supply, decrease the cost of electricity and allow the 940,000 population of Djibouti and its key industries to strengthen its electrical independence and economic development.
    
    The 17 SG 3.4-132 wind turbines will be installed near the Goubet cove in the Gulf of Tadjoura, on a 395-hectare site in Djibouti. The wind farm electricity interconnection solution, the civil works and ten kilometres of internal road and tracks will be built as part of project. Siemens Gamesa will also provide maintenance to the wind farm, which is scheduled to be operational in mid-2021, for a minimum of ten years, with the option to renew. The electricity generated will be sold by the consortium to Electricité de Djibouti, the national power generation company, for a period of 25 years.

    Vestas Secures Service Agreement for Senvion Turbines in Australia
    
    Vestas has secured a service agreement with Nexif Energy for the maintenance of the 126 MW first stage of the 212 MW Lincoln Gap wind farm in South Australia. Vestas will deliver a long-term Active Output Management 5000 contract for the 35 M140 3.6 MW Senvion turbines to maximise the project’s energy production and provide long-term business certainty for Nexif Energy. Delivery of service will commence immediately and will include the additional benefits of scheduled maintenance for the substation, all high voltage equipment and the facility roads.
    
    The Lincoln Gap agreement is an addition to Vestas’ existing portfolio of 107 MW Senvion turbines in Australia under long-term, full-scope service agreements. As the wind industry’s largest multibrand service provider, Vestas is now servicing over 230 MW of Senvion turbines in Australia. Vestas’ high quality of service execution and performance is underpinned by more than 10,000 dedicated service employees and a global network across 69 countries.
    
    The Lincoln Gap wind farm is in an ideal location due to its excellent wind resources and great access to the grid, which will enable it to export over 800,000 MWh a year to the Australian energy consumers.

    Vestas Bags Order for New V155-3.3 MW Turbine in China
    
    Vestas has secured the first order for the V155-3.3 MW turbine variant for two projects in China that totals 201 MW. The order includes the supply of 61 turbines and towers as well as a 5-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service contract. Both projects are derived from the ongoing Chinese auction scheme.
    
    The variant’s lower rotor rotational speed ensures low sound power levels that combined with the full-scale converter’s advanced grid capabilities, make the turbine highly suitable for China’s centralised projects as well as the increasing number of distributed wind energy projects. The 76m blade is co-developed with a local partner, combining global and local expertise and underlining Vestas’ commitment to ensure competitiveness in the Chinese market.
    
    Project delivery is expected to be in the third quarter of 2020, with commissioning in the same quarter.
