GES to install 125 turbines in Egypt

GES is already working on the installation of a 263 MW windfarm 25 km from Ras Ghareb (Egypt). The project will have three phases that will be executed during the remainder of 2018 and the first semester of 2019. This will be the first wind farm executed under a BOO scheme (Build, Own and Operate) and is part of the Egyptian government's drive to increase the proportion of renewables in the mix energy, with a target for wind generation of 7 GW in 2022. The plan contemplates an important participation of the private sector, which will reach 60% of the plan. The energy produced in the project will be sold under a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) to the EETC (Egyptian).

GES will be responsible for the assembly of the 125 turbines of 2.1 MW that will make up the park. The extensive experience with which the company counts in Egypt and the good work done in previous projects in the same area, have been the great strengths of GES for the awarding of this project. Over the last few years GES has consolidated a local installation team that allows the successful execution of upcoming projects.

GES was established in Egypt in 2006 and since then, it has undertaken construction projects for a total of 320 MW, another 380 MW in turbine installation and provides maintenance services as well.

India’s wind energy capacity addition to grow 76 per cent to 3,000 Mw in current fiscal

Economic Times reported that India’s wind energy capacity addition is set to grow by up to 76 per cent to 3,000 Megawatt (Mw) in the current financial year (2018-19) from around 1,700 Mw added last fiscal. Mr Girishkumar Kadam, vice-president at ratings agency ICRA said that "The project awards so far are expected to increase the capacity addition to about 2.5-3 GW in FY2019 from 1.7 GW in FY2018. As for the increase in bid tariffs, it is partly because of some increase in wind turbine equipment pricing, additional evacuation cost and rising cost of funding.”

He, however, added the ability of the nodal agencies to achieve the target wind project awards of 10 Gw each in Financial Year 2019 and 2020 remains a challenge in view of the difficulties being faced by developers in securing connectivity and open access to inter-state transmission network.

The wind energy sector has witnessed project awards of 10 Gw between February 2017 and September 2018 by central nodal agencies Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) and NTPC Ltd (NTPC) as well as state distribution utilities. This has provided a visibility for substantial wind-based capacity addition in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The bid tariffs discovered in the recent wind power auctions increased slightly from a low of Rs 2.43 per unit to Rs 2.77 per unit discovered during August 2018 to September 2018, though continuing to remain less than Rs 3 per unit.

While the wind energy bid tariff levels are still competitive as compared to conventional energy sources, the viability of such tariffs depends on the developers’ ability to identify locations with high generation potential, availability of long-tenure debt at cost competitive rates and capital cost.

The generation performance of wind-based Independent Power Producers (IPPs) was constrained by poor wind season in 2017-18 with many wind assets reporting Plant Load Factor (PLFs) below the expected level. However, wind power generation has improved in the current fiscal.

Generation from wind-based capacity at an all-India level increased by 21 per cent in the first six months of the current fiscal as compared to the corresponding period last fiscal. This increased generation came despite the slowdown in addition of new capacity in 2017-18 and the first half of 2018-19.

PT Banpu readies Bt13 billion for first phase of Vietnam wind farm

BANPU Power Plc plans to build a 200-megawatt, two-phase wind farm in Vietnam, with investment of about Bt13 billion for the first phase of the project. This phase will provide for 80 MW of power under a 20-year concession. The company aims to start construction next year and for power distribution to begin in 2021. Mr Sutee Sukruan, chief executive officer of BPP, said that the company had made Vietnam its first priority for overseas investment.

Recently, the company invested in its wholly-owned wind farm project at Soc Trang province in the country’s south. This wind farm project consists of two phases, with the first providing for 80 MW of power. Of the total, the first 30 MW section will see construction start in the middle of next year; it is due to be completed in 2020. Construction for a further 30 MW section and the remaining 20 megawatts is expected to be completed in 2021, with power distribution to start that year.

The second phase of 120 megawatts will be located in an area close to the first phase and is undergoing a detailed study. The company expects to spend US$2 million per megawatt, totalling USD 400 million, or about Bt13 billion for the whole wind farm project in Vietnam.

Mr Sutee said that “The wind farm project has a concession of 20 years and we expect the first phase of 80 MW to reach break-even within 8 to 10 years.”

BPP is also studying solar and wind farms projects in Vietnam. which plans to raise power production capacity from 43,000 MW to 130,000 MW by 2030. Of the total, 21 per cent will be produced from alternative energy. Of those to be produced from alternative energy, about 6,000 MW will come from wind farms, 12,000 MW from solar farms and the rest from other types of alternative energy. The company is conducting a feasibility study on investing in coal-fired power plants after selling coal to power plants in Vietnam for a long period. In 2018, BPP has sold 1.3 million tonnes of coal to Vietnam.

Mr Sutee said that “The company's advantages are our direct discussions with the Vietnamese government, while others have acquired licences from local investors. We have given the Vietnamese government more confidence. We've also made long-term investment in other countries, focusing on building good relationships with local communities.”

GES to build a 263 MW PPP wind farm near Ras Ghareb

Global Energy Services a Spanish company will produce 263 MW of renewable energy in Egypt, thanks to a wind farm whose construction is planned to start before the end of 2018. The Spanish company Global Energy Services has announced that it will start construction of a wind farm in Egypt before the end of 2018. The plant will be located 25 km from Ras Ghareb, a town in the Red Sea governorate (Gulf of Suez). It will have a production capacity of 263 MW.

In the coming weeks, GES will assemble 125 wind turbines, each with a production capacity of 2.1 MW. The energy produced will then be sold to Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, the public company responsible for electricity transmission and distribution, which will first negotiate a power purchase agreement with GES. The company, which employs more than 700 people, should also take care of the maintenance of this park, which is the result of the Benaban programme, named after a small village in the Nile near the Aswan hydroelectric plant. The objective of the programme is to encourage private companies to invest in renewable energy in Egypt, more precisely under the “Build-Own-and-Operate” model, i.e. to build, own and operate. It is in fact a specific model of public-private partnership.

Through the initiative, the Egyptian government aims to achieve a production capacity of 7 GW of wind energy by 2022. An ambition that can be achieved, especially since the country is teeming with wind energy projects. In the Gulf of Suez, where the GHG project, Acwa Power, is located, a Saudi company will build a 500 MW wind farm. Feasibility studies are underway. The project would be carried out by the Japanese company Marubeni Corporation, which will start work in 2020.

Also in this region, blown by the Red Sea wind, a consortium of companies is building a 250 MW wind farm, expandable to 500 MW. These are the French company Engie, the Japanese Toyota Tsusho Corporation and the Egyptian Orascom Construction. Together, the three companies will invest USD 400 million. The feed-in tariff has not yet been negotiated between the three companies and EETC. It will probably be in 2020, before the wind farm is commissioned.

Sindh to establish grid company for wind energy projects

The Nation reported that Sindh government has announced to establish its own grid company under public-private partnership mode, which will dedicatedly work to evacuate clean electricity being generated in the country’s only wind corridor in Thatta-Jhimpir area of the province. The announcement to this effect was made by Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh while speaking on Wednesday as the chief guest at the inauguration of 17th World Wind Energy Conference-2018. The three-day conference was organized by World Wind Energy Association with the theme “Re-energizing the developing world”.

The provincial minister said on the occasion that the proposed grid company would serve as the cornerstone of the Sindh government’s energy policy being pursued to harness the massive potential the province had to produce clean electricity on basis of its untapped renewable resources of power generation.

He said that Sindh government would establish its own grid company in pursuance of the same policy spirit, which had been earlier utilized to set up its own transmission and dispatch company for transmitting electricity from 100 MWs Nooriabad power plant-provincial government first own power plant under PPP mode-to Karachi.

Mr Shaikh said that Sindh government had reserved 60,000 acres land in the province to develop renewable energy projects showing well its outstanding commitment to generate electricity using the alternative resources. He said that 23 wind energy projects had started functioning in Gharo-Jhimpir corridor of the province while another 30 to 40 such projects were under different stages of completion.

The energy minister hoped that the federal government would readily grant permissions to the upcoming wind energy projects of the province much like the spirit shown by Sindh government to promote usage of renewable energy generation in the country.

He said that Sindh government would soon launch a USD 100 million solar power project in the province with the assistance of World Bank as this would benefit the residents of off-grid areas in rural areas. He said that renewable energy generation at present stood for mere 05 per cent of the national energy mix as this had to be maximally enhanced as electricity so produced was clean and economical, while it didn’t require any imported source of fuel as completely indigenous energy resources would be utilized for the purpose.

The provincial minister while addressing audience of the conference comprising investors doing wind energy projects in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, WWEA President Peter Rae hoped that 17th edition of World Wind Energy Conference would go a long way to explore the potential of renewable energy resources globally to ensure a sustainable and better world for people.

WWEA Honourary Vice President Air Marshal (Retd) Shahid Hamid said that Pakistan had been gifted with enormous untapped renewable energy resources whose proper utilization could not just be helpful to meet electricity demand of the entire country but could also generate surplus electricity.

Siemens Gamesa and Ruselprom sign contract on wind energy for Russia

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has reached an important milestone in the localisation strategy for Russia. SGRE and Ruselprom, a leading manufacturer of electric motors and generators, have signed a manufacturing and supply agreement for the Russian market. According to the contract, Ruselprom will locally produce and deliver generators for onshore wind turbines. Recently, SGRE has secured the first order for a 90 MW wind farm in Russia.

The Ruselprom Group is one of the leading Russian designers and manufacturers of electric motors and generators with several plants and R&D centers across Russia. The company is experienced in the development and production of generators with capacities of up to 50,000 kW, digital excitation systems, variable frequency drives and soft start systems.

The contract signed with Ruselprom is part of the local content requirements, which are mandatory for the bidders of tenders for the construction of wind capacity in Russia. The company has been awarded the order for the production and supply of wind turbine generators within an open tender conducted by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

Mr Steven Pryor, CEO Onshore North Europe and Middle East at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy said that “As a globally leading company in wind power, Siemens Gamesa is excited to enter into the Russian renewable energy market to contribute to sustainable energy generation for the country. We are pleased to add Ruselprom as a strong partner to our local supply and value chain. With our proven technology we offer advanced and reliable wind power generators. Our local suppliers will support us to provide the best possible product for the Russian market.”
