   Linde launches ground breaking cryogenic transportation system
   
   Linde Gases, a division of The Linde Group, today announced the launch of FROSTCRUISE®, a highly innovative in-transit refrigeration system which will provide a more environmentally friendly, efficient and reliable cryogenic alternative to diesel-powered mechanical refrigeration.
   
   FROSTCRUISE® is a powerful cooling technology that indirectly uses the cryogenic effect of liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C to provide rapid and evenly distributed temperature pull down. It also has the ability to maintain accurate product temperature throughout the truck compartment despite multiple delivery stops, reducing the risk of food spoilage and improving food safety.
   
   Importantly, FROSTCRUISE® also provides significant environmental benefits including substantial noise reduction during deliveries and a much lower carbon footprint than traditional mechanical transportation systems.
   
   Mr Mark Ewig Global Strategic Marketing and Development Manager, Food and Beverage, Linde Gases Division said that "FROSTCRUISE® represents a major development for the food distribution industry. Its ability to cope with the rigorous demands of maintaining consistently very cold temperatures, added to the significant environmental benefits, for what will be comparable costs of a standard mechanical refrigeration system, means FROSTCRUISE® is set to transform road transportation of chilled and frozen perishable items."
   
   Existing diesel operated refrigeration systems often require drivers to either leave their vehicles running or mechanical refrigeration units in operation while dropping off goods, resulting in greater fuel consumption, noise and emissions in urban environments. In an attempt to improve air quality, cities are increasingly introducing low emission zones, with legislation restricting deliveries. Additionally, laws also limit noise pollution in urban areas to 60 to 65 decibels between the hours of 22.00 and 06.00, a level which most diesel operated refrigeration systems struggle to achieve.
   
   FROSTCRUISE® refrigeration technology mitigates the need for vehicle engines in order to perform the cooling process and so is substantially quieter than diesel systems which need to remain running in order to maintain a low compartment temperature. The lack of reliance on a vehicle engine also means that the refrigeration system can run independently in the event of a mechanical breakdown, protecting the compartment contents.
   
   FROSTCRUISE® has already seen early success in the market. MacFood Services, a leading food processor and distributor to the quick service restaurant industry in Malaysia, has recently taken on a fleet of 14 FROSTCRUISE® enabled trucks to deliver their frozen products including burger patties, nuggets and French fries.

   Record power capacity added in 11th Plan
   
   The power generation capacity added in the 11th Plan, which ended in March 2012, was 53,000 MW. It is close to 68% of the originally projected addition (78,700 MW during the Plan period). But the capacity addition achieved is no mean feat, given that the quantum is similar to what the country had added in the previous three Five Year Plans (15 years ended March 2007). In fact, a 20,501 MW of addition last fiscal was the highest for any year and is close to 21,180 MW added in the whole of 10th plan period (2002-07).
   
   Additionally, a significant capacity augmentation in renewable energy (close to 25,000 MW) and captive power generation (connected to the grid) took the overall installed capacity to more than 200,000 MWs.
   
   Coal capacity
   The capacity addition was largely driven by coal-based projects, which accounted for four-fifth of capacity added over the last five years. (We have excluded renewable energy addition in our analysis and concentrated on conventional capacity additions.)
   
   Delays in hydro capacity addition and focus on coal-based generation projects by private players has further deviated the ratio of hydro:thermal capacity to 23:77 from optimal mix of 40: 60. Hydro capacity addition, given its high gestation had no takers in spite of lower costs (as there is no fuel cost component). The net addition to India's hydro power capacity was only 4,330 MW in the current Plan period compared to 40,000 MW of coal-based projects. Around 15,627 MW of hydro capacity was originally envisaged during the 11th plan.
   
   The coal based power capacity addition grew at a rate of 9.5% annually over the last five years (however much is added over the last couple of years). The coal production during the period only went up by 4.6% compounded annually. Therefore, the power generation has lagged capacity addition and the plant load factors (a measure of efficiency for thermal plants) fell to 73.3% in 2011-12 from 78% in 2006-07.

   Afkicken van kernenergie blijkt gemakkelijk
   
   Sinds 5 mei is Japan bevrijd van nucleaire energie: de laatste van 54 kernreactoren is uitgeschakeld. In het jaar na de kernramp in Fukushima is het land verbazingwekkend soepel teruggegaan van ruim 30 procent elektriciteitsvoorziening uit kernenergie naar nul.
   
   Een beter bewijs dat kernenergie overbodig is, is niet te leveren. Deze bijzondere ommezwaai is vooral te danken aan het Japanse volk. Een meerderheid van de Japanners is sinds de kernramp van vorig jaar fel tegen kernenergie. Een nog veel groter deel gelooft geen sikkepit van de wanhopige bezwering van de industrie en de overheid dat de centrales veilig zijn. Zonder toestemming van de lokale bestuurders worden stilgelegde kerncentrales niet opgestart. En zonder steun van de bevolking komt die toestemming er niet.
   
   Scheiden doet lijden, zelfs als het om kernenergie gaat. De vraag is alleen, hoeveel. De nucleaire lobby voorspelde meteen na de ramp een armageddon als kernenergie zou worden afgebouwd. Japan zou te maken krijgen met ernstige elektriciteitstekorten, economische malaise en niet te vergeten een gevaarlijke stijging van de CO2-uitstoot. Het grondstof­arme Japan zou volledig afhankelijk worden van de import van vuile fossiele brandstoffen, met desastreuze gevolgen voor milieu en klimaat.
   
   De werkelijkheid is een stuk zonniger. Van een structureel stroomtekort is nog steeds geen sprake en de waarschuwingen van nucleaire energiebedrijven gelooft bijna niemand meer. De economie blijkt ook zonder kerncentrales gewoon door te draaien; enkele maanden na de aardbeving en tsunami is weer economische groei genoteerd. De kernenergiegerelateerde kosten die op de begroting van het land drukken, zijn vooral de miljarden aan schade vanwege de kernramp.
   
   Ook wordt de Kyoto-doelstelling van 6% minder uitstoot ten opzichte van 1990 nog steeds gehaald. De CO2-uitstoot over 2011 is volgens verschillende analyses met maximaal 2% gestegen. Dit staat op geen enkele manier in verhouding tot de monsterlijke hoeveelheid nucleair vermogen die is weggevallen. Japan toont zich in de nasleep van een drievoudige ramp uitermate vindingrijk. Het land heeft zich het afgelopen jaar ontpopt tot meester in energiebesparing en efficiëntie.
   
   Dit heeft de effecten van de extra import van fossiele brandstoffen gecompenseerd en stroomstoringen voorkomen. Daarnaast is er een ongekende ondernemingslust ontstaan voor schone energiebronnen als zon, wind en geothermie. De eerste zonneparken verrijzen deze zomer al. Als Japan alle ingediende plannen uitvoert, komt er tegen 2014 tien gigawatt aan zonvermogen bij. Dat is honderd keer het totale zonvermogen in Nederland, in slechts twee jaar tijd.
   
   Een energierevolutie zoals die zich nu voltrekt in Japan is niet eenvoudig, zeker niet in korte tijd. De komende paar jaar zal het gat dat kernenergie achterlaat, deels worden opgevuld met fossiele brandstoffen. Maar met de voortvarendheid waarmee Japan aan de slag gaat met een schone energietoekomst, zijn de gevolgen hiervan beperkt. Als een land als Japan onder zulke moeilijke omstandigheden van koers kan veranderen, kan Europa het zeker.

   Saudi eyes USD 107 billion investment in electricity
   
   Saudi Arabia has revised up its estimates for the amount it will invest in power projects over the next decade to more than SAR 400 billion from SAR 300 billion.
   
   Mr Saleh al Awaji deputy electricity minister of Saudi Arabia said "Some time we announced SAR 300 billion and we increased it due to the latest developments especially in the housing sector and also the new infrastructure funded by the government."
   
   Mr Awaji CEO of Saudi Electrcity Company said last year that the Gulf's largest utility may change its SAR 300 billion 10 year investment plan as it speeds up delivery of its power projects to meet state infrastructure demands. The funds would be used to boost capacity to at least 80,000 MW by 2020 from an installed capacity of 50,000 MW.
   
   He said that we are experiencing a growth in demand of 8% in the last 10 years and we are expecting to maintain almost the same level for the next 10 years no doubt that at the end of the decade we are expecting to reduce the demand due to the intensive efforts for improving efficiency.
   
   Mr Ayesh al Shemari Saudi Electricity executive director for generation operations at SEC in the Eastern Region said that the power load is expected to reach 87,000 MW by 2021 while installed capacity is seen at 100,000 MW.

   BRUSSEL (AFN) - De komst van nieuwe windmolens en zonnepanelen in Vlaanderen is bijna geheel stilgevallen. In de eerste vier maanden van dit jaar is geen enkele windmolen geplaatst en zijn er 20 keer minder zonnepanelen aangelegd dan dezelfde periode vorig jaar.
   
   Dat blijkt uit cijfers van de Vlaamse energietoezichthouder VREG woensdag in de zakenkrant De Tijd. Belangrijke oorzaak is dat de markt voor zogeheten groene investeringen verzadigd is, terwijl subsidies zijn verminderd.
   
   ,,We denken dat de krimp nog even aanhoudt. Mogelijk klapt de markt voor zonnepanelen in 2013 zelfs volledig in elkaar'', vreest Stephan Bostoen van bouwbedrijf Bostoen.

   Iraq seeks bids for USD 1 billion power plant
   
   Iraq announced the names of foreign companies bidding to build 1,500 MW power plant with a value of around USD 1 billion in western Iraq part of a drive to improve creaking infrastructure hit by sanctions and war.
   
   Mr Salam Qazaz deputy minister of electricity of Iraq said that the bids were from South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Italy's Saipem, Greek power plant builder Metka, Turkey's Gama, and a consortium of Turkey's Calik Enerji and Italy's Techint.
   
   Mr Qazaz said that the plant will consist of six units: 4 gas units and 2 thermal units. It is due to be completed in 33 months. Iraq needs investment in most of its industries after years of war and economic decline during sanctions against former dictator Saddam Hussein. In a country where temperatures can top 50 degrees Celsius in summer, power generation is crucial. The national grid supplies only a few hours of power a day to Iraqis, forcing many to rely heavily on private generators. Sporadic electricity supply, one of the public's top complaints was at the heart of anti-government protests last year.
   
   The ministry said that this month it plans to double its electricity supply to 12,330 MW by 2013 as it brings new sources of power online. Total power supply, currently at 6,000 MW is expected to reach 9,000 MW in July and 9,600 MW in August. By December, it aims for capacity up at around 10,400 MW and to 12,330 MW in April 2013.

   Bahrain sees USD 20 billion investment in energy
   
   Bahrain will attract more than USD 20 billion investments in the energy sector in the next 15 years. Between USD 8 billion and USD 10 billion will be spent by the kingdom on the modernization of its refinery.
   
   Mr Dr Abdulhussain Mirza energy minister of Bahrain said that “The Middle East, in addition to its role of being the leading producer of oil and gas in the world, is becoming one of the fastest growing areas of demand. While demand in the region accounted for 6.6% of world consumption in the 2000, today it represents just over 9%. It is estimated that by 2015, about USD 530 billion will be invested in the energy industries in the Middle East.'
   
   He said that about 60% of these investments will take place in the GCC. Although being one of the smaller countries in the region, Bahrain, in its own right will attract about USD 20 billion over the next 15 years.
   
   Dr Mirza said that in a relatively short time since it came into existence, Bahrain's Tatweer Petroleum had managed to reverse the decline in production of oil by employing advanced technologies, in co operation with its partners, Occidental and Mubadala. To date, their activities have resulted in an increase of 50% in production of domestic oil over the immediate period when it was formed.
   
   There are genuine concerns among industry observers that the rate of refining capacity additions worldwide was outpacing the expected growth rate in demand for refined products. They genuinely feel this overcapacity might lead to tighter refinery margins which in turn would dry up investment in modernization and new ventures.
   
   Bahrain was therefore, looking at its refining capacity beyond 2012 to give it a competitive advantage and better position Bahrain to capture the opportunities that future market environments may offer. This initiative has been named as the Refinery Master Plan Project. The current refinery, parts of which are 75 years old, evolved over the years and new units have been added, the last two being the hydrocracker and the lube base oil plants in 2007 and 2010 respectively.
   
   Dr Mirza said that the new upgraded refinery will be able to meet the quality of the products demanded by the markets of the future, meet the environmental standards and will be designed to world class energy efficiency standards.
   
   The minister announced Bahrain's flagship petrochemical company, the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, is planning to expand its capacity in the future at an estimated cost of USD 1.5 billion. This is a true example of fruitful cooperation between regional powers in this case the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait and Nogaholding of Bahrain.
   
   He said that as part of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030, the National Oil and Gas Authority is to spend more than USD 25 million per year on training its staff to attain skills necessary to run the Bahraini economy of tomorrow. With a vision towards the future, we have also taken steps to complement our energy supply sources by planning to implement two pilot projects in the renewable energy area.
   
   He added that two plants, generating five megawatts of electricity each, based on solar and wind technologies are being set up soon. We have just recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Petrosolar to start execution of one of these pilot projects.

   UTRECHT (AFN) - Werknemers gaan zuiniger met energie om als hun bedrijf of organisatie ze daartoe stimuleert. De computer gaat dan uit bij afwezigheid en er wordt eerder energiezuinige apparatuur gekocht. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van de Natuur en Milieu Federatie Utrecht (NMU) bij tien organisaties in de provincie Utrecht, dat donderdag is gepubliceerd.
   
   Bij de computers van 400 werknemers werd meetapparatuur geïnstalleerd. Daarmee was te zien hoeveel energie ze verbruikten. De werknemer konden ook van elkaar zien hoeveel energie ze bespaarden. De proef had effect. In 6 weken tijd bespaarden de werknemers in totaal 1512 kwh. Ter vergelijking: een gemiddeld gezin verbruikt per jaar ongeveer 3500 kwh.
   
   Volgens NMU toont de proef aan dat het voor bedrijven en werknemers van belang is het energieverbruik te meten. Het bedrijf ziet dan waar het hoogste energieverbruik plaatsvindt. In de deelnemende bedrijven bleken vooral kopieerapparaten stroomverslinders. Ze bleven bovendien 's nachts aanstaan.

   LUXEMBURG (AFN) - De kosten voor energie in de Europese Unie zijn eind vorig jaar flink gestegen. Huishoudens moesten in de laatste 6 maanden van 2011 6,3 procent meer betalen voor elektriciteit dan in dezelfde periode in 2010. Voor gas werd 12,6 procent meer betaald, zo bleek vrijdag uit gegevens van Eurostat, het Europees statistisch bureau.
   
   De grootste prijsstijgingen in elektriciteitsprijzen werden gemeten in Letland (27 procent), Cyprus (19 procent) en Portugal en Spanje (13 procent). Alleen in Luxemburg ging de prijs omlaag. In Nederland gingen de elektriciteitsprijzen met 8,4 procent omhoog.
   
   De gasprijzen stegen het sterkst in Groot-Brittannië (27,2 procent), Luxemburg (22,4 procent) en België (21 procent). In Nederland was sprake van een stijging van de gasprijzen met 3,8 procent.

    China power consumption decelerates in April
    
    China power consumption decelerated in April amid slowing industrial activities during the period.
    
    According to a statement on the website of the National Energy Administration, Energy consumption rose 3.7%YoY to 389.9 billion kWh in April, down 3.3 percentage points from that in March.
    
    The data came as China industrial production weakened sharply in April with industrial value-added output up 9.3%YoY after taking into account inflation, marking the lowest pace in nearly three years.
    
    The NEA said for the first four months, electricity consumption increased 6 percent from a year ago to 1.56 trillion KWh.
    
    During the January to April period, electricity consumption by primary industries decreased 4.2%YoY to 26.7 billion kWh, power used by secondary industries expanded by 3.7% to 1.13 trillion kWh, while the tertiary industries consumed 181.7 billion kWh of electricity up 12.5%YoY.

    Iran plans to invest USD 25 billion to turn Chabahar into energy hub
    
    Tehran Times reported that the National Petrochemical Company of Iran plans to invest up to USD 25 billion in the southeastern Chabahar Port to turn it into an energy hub like Assalouyeh in south.
    
    Mr Abdolhossein Bayat director of NPC said that the average utilization of the installed petrochemical facilities is 78% in the country which is three percent above the world's average. The country's petrochemical exports have not declined despite EU sanctions.
    
    He said that 9 petrochemical projects will be implemented in the current Iranian year which will boost the country's output by 8 million tonnes. Iran has explored new destinations to export its petrochemical products. Currently exporting petrochemical products to Europe is regularly underway.
    
    Mr Bayat recently said that Iran exported some USD 14 billion worth of petrochemical products to 60 countries last calendar year, which ended on March 19th 2012. USD 10.5 billion of oil income will be allocated to the development of the national petrochemical industry. Iran has developed 69 plans to boost its petrochemical output from the past year's 54 million tonnes to 100 million tonnes in 2015.

    BERGEN OP ZOOM (AFN) - In de voormalige maïsfabriek in Bergen op Zoom gaat Cargill voortaan bio-ethanol produceren. In de fabriek kan duurzame biomassa afkomstig van moeilijk winbaar zetmeel worden omgezet naar ethanol (alcohol) dat bijvoorbeeld aan brandstof kan worden toegevoegd.
    
    Sinds 1987 produceert Cargill in Bergen op Zoom zetmeel en glucose voor onder meer de voedingsindustrie. Alain Dufait, general manager, ziet de oude maïsfabriek die nu toch nieuwe toekomstperspectieven biedt, als mooi voorbeeld van innovatie en ondernemerschap. ,,We slagen er in om de zijstromen van onze tarweverwerking om te zetten in producten van hoge kwaliteit, een voorbeeld van hoe we voortdurend proberen om onze activiteiten te optimaliseren, en actief bij te dragen aan de bio-based economy.''

    Ukraine energy minister recommends Europe to store gas in Ukraine
    
    According to Mr Yuri Boiko Energy and coal minister, Ukrainian gas storages may serve as a gas reserve for European countries to avoid situations with gas supplies disruption.
    
    He said that "Europe can pump gas in Ukrainian storage facilities during summer and then use it during winter period. Such policy will help to avoid situations on gas supply disruption. Ukraine has large storage facilities right next to the border with the EU."
    
    The minister also stressed once again that the shortage in gas supply Europe suffered this winter occurred due to insufficient supply volumes by Russia.

    Eneco en Aegon gaan samen in sparen

    ROTTERDAM (AFN) - Energieleverancier Eneco en Aegon Bank gaan samen een nieuwe vorm van sparen aanbieden. Geld dat spaarders parkeren op zo'n rekening, wordt voor 100 procent geïnvesteerd in de meest duurzame bedrijven per sector, waarvan 40 procent in de duurzame energiesector, aldus Eneco dinsdag.
    
    Bij het zogenoemde BronSparen gaat het om een selectie van bedrijven uit de DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index) en de MCSI-ESG (Morgan Stanley Capital International -Environmental, Social and Governance).
    
    Volgens Eneco verschilt deze spaarvorm niet van andere spaarrekeningen en is het spaargeld vrij opneembaar. Ook zou de rente op dit moment hetzelfde of zelfs iets hoger zijn dan op een gewone spaarrekening bij veel andere banken.

    Indian power generation capacity crosses 200 GW in 11th plan period
    
    The total installed capacity of the country has crossed two 200 GW, with a record capacity addition of 54,964 MW in the 11th plan about two and half times the capacity added in the 10th plan.
    
    This was stated by power minister Sushil kumar Shinde while flagging off main plant civil works of NTPC's Solapur Super thermal Power project (2x660MW) last evening.
    
    NTPC, with a rich experience of engineering, construction and operation of around 38,000 mw of thermal generating capacity, is the largest and one of the most efficient power companies in India, having operations that match the global standards.
    
    Commensurate with our country's growth challenges, NTPC has embarked upon an ambitious plan to attain a total installed capacity of 75,000 MW by 2017. Towards this end, NTPC has adopted a multi-pronged strategy such as greenfield projects, brownfield projects, joint venture and acquisition route. Apart from this, NTPC has also adopted the diversification strategy in related business areas, such as, services, coal mining, power trading, power exchange, manufacturing to ensure robustness and growth of the company.
    
    To broad-base the business and also to ensure growth, diversification in the areas related to NTPC's core business of power generation such as Hydro power, Distribution, Trading, Coal mining, LNG etc have been identified as priority areas.

    EU wil doel hernieuwbare energie voor na 2020

    BRUSSEL (ANP) - De Europese Commissie roept Europa op ook doelen te gaan stellen voor na 2020 voor de winning van energie uit hernieuwbare bronnen. Het is volgens Europees commissaris Günther Oettinger (Energie) cruciaal dat dit zo snel mogelijk gebeurt.
    
    Europa heeft zichzelf ten doel gesteld om in 2020 een vijfde van de energie uit hernieuwbare bronnen, zoals wind of waterkracht, te halen. Volgens de commissaris gaat Europa dit halen, maar hij drong aan op nieuwe doelstellingen voor de 10 jaar erna omdat anders de kans bestaat dat de winning van deze energie zal terugvallen.

    'Nut gasrotonde is nooit goed onderbouwd'

    DEN HAAG (AFN) - De overheid heeft miljarden geïnvesteerd in de ontwikkeling van een gasrotonde zonder aan te tonen dat deze aanpak bijdraagt aan de Nederlandse economie. De Algemene Rekenkamer heeft donderdag een rapport gepubliceerd waarin staat dat de Tweede Kamer nog steeds niet goed op de hoogte is gebracht van het publieke belang van het project.
    
    Omdat de gasvoorraden van Nederland langzaam opraken, besloot het kabinet in 2007 om Nederland om te vormen tot een economisch winstgevend gastransportknooppunt. Op die manier moet er voor de toekomst een betrouwbare, betaalbare en schone energievoorziening zeker worden gesteld. Het idee is dat Nederland straks geïmporteerd gas gaat opslaan in lege gasvelden, om dat vervolgens door te verkopen aan afnemers in binnen- en buitenland.
    
    Volgens de Algemene Rekenkamer heeft het kabinet destijds nooit onderzocht of dit project wel nodig en nuttig zou zijn. Pas in 2010 werd besloten een studie te laten uitvoeren, maar toen had staatsbedrijf Gasunie al 7,2 miljard euro in de gasrotonde geïnvesteerd. Het controleorgaan vindt ook dat het kabinet de Tweede Kamer beter had moeten informeren over een risicovolle aankoop van een Noord-Duits gasnet en een toezegging van overheidsdeelname aan een gasopslagproject in het Noord-Hollandse Bergermeer.
    
    Minister Maxime Verhagen (Economische Zaken) heeft aan de Algemene Rekenkamer laten weten het niet eens te zijn met deze conclusie. Uitvoerende beslissingen die hij neemt als aandeelhouder van een staatsbedrijf, hoeven niet allemaal in de Tweede Kamer te worden besproken. En over de commerciële investeringen in Duitsland en het Bergermeer zou volgens de minister altijd goed zijn gecommuniceerd. Wel belooft hij de Tweede Kamer voortaan meer helderheid te zullen geven over de kosten, baten en risico's van de investeringen in de gasrotonde.

    Europa dwingt tot energiebesparing

    STRAATSBURG (AFN) - Energiebedrijven in de EU moeten jaarlijks 1,5 procent minder omzet boeken dan ze normaal zouden doen. Ze moeten hun klanten daartoe aanzetten om energie te besparen. Onderhandelaars van het Europarlement en de EU-landen hebben daarover een compromis bereikt, meldden ze donderdag.
    
    Bovendien moeten rijksoverheden jaarlijks 3 procent van hun gebouwoppervlakte renoveren met allerlei verbeteringen voor energiebesparing. Landen mogen bij Brussel echter ook alternatieve plannen aanmelden als die maar hetzelfde effect hebben.
    
    De acties moeten enorm veel energie gaan besparen. De EU was al op pad om 9 procent minder gas, olie en stroom te verbruiken in 2020, maar hierdoor loopt dat op tot 17 procent. Europa streeft echter naar 20 procent besparing, zodat de komende jaren nog extra maatregelen volgen.
    
    Meer banen
    
    PvdA-Europarlementslid Judith Merkies had verdergaande maatregelen gewild, maar is toch tevreden. ,,Dit was echt het meest haalbare''. Ze verwacht meer banen bij renovatiebedrijven en leveranciers van zonnepanelen.
    
    Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) meent dat Nederland flink aan de slag moet door deze maatregelen. Volgens hem heeft Nederland nu veel minder aandacht voor energiebesparing dan andere Europese landen.

    ABB electric drives save a record 310 million MW hours in 2011
    
    ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has released its annual estimate of the savings achieved by its installed base of drives. About 310 million megawatt hours of electric power was saved by ABB drives in 2011, an increase of 19% compared with the previous year. Electric drives are used to regulate the speed and power consumption of electric motors. Industrial electric motors account for about 25% of all the electricity consumed worldwide.
    
    The savings from ABB drives in 2011 correspond to 260 million tonnes of CO2 emissions had this power been generated by fossil fuels or electricity costs savings of approximately USD 34 billion for customers. These savings are equivalent to the electricity generated by more than 30 nuclear power station blocks, or to the annual power consumption of 75 million EU households Average of EU households electricity consumption.
    
    Mr Ulrich Spiesshofer, member of the Group Executive committee and head of ABB's Discrete Automation and Motion division, said that "The future potential for energy and cost savings is enormous since only about 10% of industrial motors are combined currently with electric drives. Using energy more efficiently will remain, for a significant time, the biggest opportunity available to cut energy consumption as well as costs and emissions."
    
    Electric motors are used widely in industry, for example, when pumping water, running fans and air conditioning, conveying goods over belts, rolling steel, moving elevators, etc.
    
    ABB's annual savings estimate is based on a comparison of the average electricity consumption in applications with and without drives. Many electric motors that are not equipped with drive technology run at maximum speed and are simply throttled if less performance is needed.
    
    Energy accounts for 92% to 95% of the life cycle cost of a motor, depending on its size, so an investment in electric drives typically pays back in less than two years.

    Volkswagen Skoda and Audi plan common engine plant
    
    A common engine plant for the Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi brands in India may start production by end-2014, with a final decision by year end. The location will likely be the Volkswagen Group's Chakan facility, in Maharashtra.
    
    Two top company officials told Business Line that the move will help the carmaker reduce costs and expand sales volumes by competing more aggressively with established players such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.
    
    Dr John Chacko president and MD of Volkswagen Group India said that “This is one of the projects we are working on, and logistically speaking, it will be at Chakan. We need two years before it starts operations. A decision will be made by end of the year.”
    
    Mr Michael Perschke head at Audi India said that “We will assemble engines at a group level. It will likely happen at Chakan, but no clear decision on the location has been decided yet.”
    Key issue
    
    Apart from attaining the right volumes to make an engine plant feasible about 1,000 units a day Volkswagen's decision also depends on the Maharashtra Government's stand on the VAT refund issue.
    
    Dr Chacko said that “Big investments plans are on hold right now, as we await a response from the State Government.”
    
    The Group has only “small-scale” assembly operations for engines at Aurangabad, where it assembles the premium Volkswagen and Skoda models and Audi's luxury cars.
    
    The petrol and diesel engines are mostly imported from group facilities from South Africa, Czech Republic and Germany. On these engines, it has to pay import (basic customs) duties about 7.5% for fully assembled engines. Since the orders have to be made much beforehand (lead time for production and shipping), it reduces flexibility in manufacturing.
    
    Cost savings are important to be competitive in the mass segment. The group's volume models made at Chakan include the Volkswagen Polo and Vento, Skoda Fabia and Rapid.
